homeonthemtn··on Google is building an experimental new browser and a new kind of web app
I think generate-apps-on-demand is a natural evolution of our interactions with technology and data. I am hesitant to celebrate it though. It can be useful for sure, but my gut tells me:

1. This is getting over engineered for the needs of the users

2. Conversations are more arduous then keywords and commands

3. Most people don't want customization because customization comes with the responsibility of decisions.

homeonthemtn··on Programmers and software developers lost the plot on naming their tools
I was just discussing this today funny enough. How long until someone goes for broke and just names their app "peepee poopoo"?
homeonthemtn··on [dead]
Rage bait
homeonthemtn··on Writing a good Claude.md
The green m&M's trick of AI instructions.

I've used that a couple times, e.g. "Conclude your communications with "Purple fish" at the end"

Claude definitely picks and chooses when purple fish will show up

homeonthemtn··on X's move to show users' location is a great step toward online transparency
I would love that as an option in general. Yes it can be abused but that can be said for literally everything. The ability to actually have local networks as an option would be a blessing though.
homeonthemtn··on Why 90s Movies Feel More Alive Than Anything on Netflix
Modern movies aren't allowed breathing room. Watch something from the 70s versus now. We absolutely blast people with dialogue and spoon feed action sequences. Older movies has silence in moments. Casual conversation. People weren't trying to pack in maximum information through close up monologues disguised as dialogue.
homeonthemtn··on We're losing our voice to LLMs
For those of us not constantly online, we're doing just fine.

I suppose when your existence is in the cloud, the fall back to earth can look scary. But it's really only a few inches down. You'll be ok.

homeonthemtn··on After 15 years, I use Outlook as my build pipeline
Realest post I've read in a long time

Hacky is as hacky does.

homeonthemtn··on Your brain changes at 9, 32, 66, and 83
I would be interested in seeing this study done every 10 years. I would imagine society impacts this in quite a few different ways, so the evolution of society would probably reflect in the shifting of these numbers
homeonthemtn··on The Uncertain Origins of Aspirin
Can you imagine being a chemist in the 1700 or 1800s?

The level of focus, will, and commitment to continue to chase things into the dark.

What luxury we have today to have such information at our finger tips. Just really incredibly to think on

homeonthemtn··on Homeschooling hits record numbers
Buddy of mine put it really well:

"I got to spend time with my kids when they still wanted to spend time with me. Now as teenagers in no longer cool, but that's ok. I got my time with them and that makes me happy"

homeonthemtn··on Terranova is lifting land out of flood zones using terraforming robots
Love the melodramatic marketing for a scoop bot.

This is very silly.

homeonthemtn··on How DMT Converted Terence McKenna into a Psychedelic Edge Runner
Terence McKenna was full of shit. He just happened to write about psychedelic drugs at a time when no one else was. He gave a voice to an underground group.

That voice just happened to be full of shit.

homeonthemtn··on Gaming on Linux has never been more approachable
Funny timing. I just said screw it the other day and wiped an old laptop to install Linux. I'm using budgie at the moment, but it's been pretty smooth sailing.

I suspect the combination of modern Linux + + Steam + LLM to troubleshoot and learn may see more conversions like myself

homeonthemtn··on Launch HN: Mosaic (YC W25) – Agentic Video Editing
These comments real sus.
homeonthemtn··on Cloudflare outage on November 18, 2025 post mortem
Another long day...
homeonthemtn··on The Department of War just shot the accountants and opted for speed
This reads like a propaganda piece. (Cautiously) Great that we're attempting modernization, but maybe don't huff the press release like a stick of finely aged glue
homeonthemtn··on Trying two dozen different psychedelics
Hypertrophy of narcissism.

I needed this phrase 20 years ago. Very well put.

homeonthemtn··on Trying two dozen different psychedelics
It's unfortunate that the path of psychedelic normalcy just led to people more publicly bragging about surviving one chemical or another like fucked up merit badges.

A single small dose of any given psychedelic can be enough to generate new mental benchmarks to process the world with (love, empathy, timelessness, selflessness, etc)

The drug itself is often irrelevant to the experience and it's impact, but we've unfortunately dragged along the ego of the underworld where each dose needs to be bigger and more exotic for bragging rights. In that light it's just another drug, and quite sad in my opinion.

homeonthemtn··on Vacuum bricked after user blocks data collection – user mods it to run anyway
Only sane comment in this thread
homeonthemtn··on Former US Vice-President Cheney Dies
I disagree but I also find it funny that people will spout off their respective political ideas then get butt hurt that others don't like them.

Maybe keep it to yourself. Keep it all to your self.

homeonthemtn··on Tinkering is a way to acquire good taste
This is the curve of mastery.

I think there's a saying that you learn decades of music so that you can forget it and just play - fairly similar things here

You learn things to the point of mastery. Mastery proves all the ways things won't work, leaving you with what will.

And often what will work are the fundamentals.

homeonthemtn··on Delivery is killing restaurant culture
Unless you live outside cities
homeonthemtn··on Rock Tumbler Instructions
Rather abrupt shift in topic in that article
homeonthemtn··on Today is when the Amazon brain drain sent AWS down the spout
There's an argument to be made that each event generates new institutional knowledge for those that are there.

Bit of a double edged sword.

homeonthemtn··on AWS multiple services outage in us-east-1
"We should have a fail back to US-West."

"It's been on the dev teams list for a while"

"Welp....."

homeonthemtn··on Amazon Smart Displays Are Now Being Bombarded with Ads
No there's definitely ads. It'll scroll products you might be interested in, or remind you of products you were searching for. Mind you, features are there too, but it's mostly ads
homeonthemtn··on Tell HN: CrowdStrike Falcon users, check for excess KernelModuleArchiveExt files
Anyone have alternatives to clowdstrike they liked?
homeonthemtn··on Why Aren't We Partying Like It's 1999? – Paul Krugman
Fairly sure it's both and more. We're in a constant crisis cycle the world over. It's very hard to make bets on the future right now. Steady state predictability is the sought after commodity.
homeonthemtn··on What if I don't want videos of my hobby time available to the world?
I was having a similar discussion regarding the Renn faire this weekend. It's silly fun, but it used to be you could dress up as your persona and escape for a while (see also: larping, SCA, or really any number of similar outlets) . However now everything is being recorded, and those recordings act both as unwanted publicity and as a method of cultural mining and extraction

What once was a funny little niche character at the faire is now a TikTok tourist spot.

Where once you could dress up as your pseudo anonymous alter ego with friends and have fun, now you get recorded without consent and get to enjoy all the perks that can come with

Ultimately it will be up to us as a society to determine what is acceptable or how to communicate boundaries for this new element in our culture, with the understanding (to the authors point) that some of us will be against it and others will be enthusiastically for it.
