homeonthemtn··on Why is everyone trying to build a solid-state battery?
Well, yes actually. If you're talking any kind of batteries above Duracell level, then it's important to understand how much power can be stored in a given "unit"
homeonthemtn··on Europe's Ultra-Rich Could Fund a Substantial Part of the EU's Budget
We could do both. There is very little sympathy for the ultra wealthy though. I suspect they'll be fine.
homeonthemtn··on Why a $154B CEO just endorsed stripping most Americans of voting rights
I don't understand why we humor this stuff. Our society has lost the ability to simply say "no" to something. We have to argue everything into the weeds, constantly hand wringing about biases and hearing all voices.

You can be biased. I, for one, am biased towards democracy and am comfortable telling people to fuck off when they question it. I don't need to debate it. Just fuck right off.

homeonthemtn··on Astronauts describe persistent 'observer' sensation after 6 month missions
The mind works with benchmarks on a constant basis. Everything is a comparison - to your prior experiences, other people's experiences, your identity, etc etc etc

Introducing a new benchmark creates a new perspective to measure old perspectives against. In essence, de-sycing your perceptions of self, reality, etc until the new and old normalize out.

(You see this with psychedelics a lot which is why it can be such a valuable therapy for depression and PTSD)

It is no wonder that being put in a giant space bullet, shot into the darkness of space, with the light of your world reflected back at you like the ultimate out of body experience leads to an "observer" sensation.

Yeah I dunno what this is
homeonthemtn··on Terence McKenna's Mega Bad Trip (2025)
Classic psychedelic community. Preach about ego death while maintaining a huge ego.

Guy goes through traumatic experiences because he abused the hell out of psychedelics (5g weekly, wtf?) but continues to encourage people to do the same because he doesn't want to be seen as weak

I have so many problems with McKenna. Guy was a drug addict but because he was one of the first to write about drugs during an era of taboo, he gets a pioneers deference. That would be fine if people still didn't glorify his absurd doses and bull shit about "knowledge downloads" or whatever it is.

Anyways, pardon my rant

homeonthemtn··on Evidence of inconsistencies in evaluation process and selection of winners
Unless you can change the rankings. Then... Then it gets dumb real fast
homeonthemtn··on All Watched over by Machines of Loving Grace (2011)
This was a fascinating read, thank you
homeonthemtn··on Death of the Status Update: Why 55% of Americans Stopped Posting on Social Media
I think we stopped posting because it's a miserable, unnecessary experience made worse by miserable unnecessary technology
homeonthemtn··on Atlassian ordered to reinstate engineer sacked over Slack clash with leadership
He is a rich jerk, and this is still wildly unprofessional behavior.

This is a bonfire of vanities and nothing more.

homeonthemtn··on 'Chinese Dreamcore,' Where Gen Z Relives a Brighter Past
The NYT is funny. We have rotational nostalgia trends on a constant basis (I think the youth are running around in my jncos and band tshirts right now). Do we credit that to dire economics and dark times?

No, we say it's a trend like all the other trends we went through.

NYT though - Oh whoa are the Chinese! They're so depressed they're being trendy! Heavens no! Not the nostalgia!

homeonthemtn··on Spider venom kills varroa mites without harming honeybees
It's pretty easy to check his Wikipedia and see for your self what his academic background is. You can also read research done specifically by him, if you can find it, and you can read his books and judge for yourself if what he is selling is suspiciously without evidence. Or go to his website hocking "host defense" mushroom capsules.

Compared to an actual mycologist like Gary Lincoff (rip), I think you'll see the contrast to be sharp.

Or don't. No skin off my back.

homeonthemtn··on The glass backbone: Why the Army's logistics will break in the next war
I hadn't heard this before. Do you have a good article on it? I'd be curious to learn more
homeonthemtn··on How the U.S. Engineered Its Sovereignty
This article is cherry picked nonsense.
homeonthemtn··on Falling fertility on the left as key driver of US birth decline
This report is from 2.5 years ago. I am talking about within the past year to 2 years. So this might actual lend credit to my theory of a stealth baby boom happening. Perhaps I should have clarified "happening right now"
homeonthemtn··on Falling fertility on the left as key driver of US birth decline
Ha none. We are not "conservative" in the least bit, or even politically performative.
homeonthemtn··on Falling fertility on the left as key driver of US birth decline
I agree with you, but this is not the case. It is very much a trend with people in their mid 30s right now. The overlap is there yes, we have friends who have children, but for instance my wife announced her pregnancy and had 4 friends announce shortly there after. We certainly did not conspire with them on conception :)

It is an odd time for everyone to be really into kids but perhaps that is a species trigger for all we know

homeonthemtn··on I wanted to be Anthony Bourdain–until I met him
It's also worth flipping the view - imagine being idolized with all of your own faults and flaws?

To me, at least, the idea seems an uncomfortable and absurd idea from 1 person much less many people

homeonthemtn··on Falling fertility on the left as key driver of US birth decline
Everything about this thread is weird and woefully online.

As an n of 1, we are surrounded by so many births that we just trade baby gear since we are either a handful of months ahead or behind many other parents. Our assumption was that we were in a stealth baby boom. Truly everyone we know has a minimum of one very young child with a high number of parents with between 2 and 4.

It certainly runs counter to many online discussions but reality often does.

homeonthemtn··on Gone but Not Forgotten: Recovering the Dead Web
This is, in effect, the entirety of human history though. 99.9999% of our collective cultures and behaviors disappear into the aether
homeonthemtn··on Ask HN: Why are so many "AI evangelists" posting such insufferable content?
Get off LinkedIn.
homeonthemtn··on In the age of algorithms and AI, is traditional media democracy's defence?
We can't have a discussion about "traditional media" until we talk about the perverse incentives of advertising.

Right now all media is focused on driving eyes to ads and data harvesting and that is it. There is no "defense of democracy" or any other high minded fantasy morals at play here.

It's a business like any other, only it's been granted vast protections from the repercussions of its actions.

homeonthemtn··on War by Other Means
What's missed here is the erasure of front lines as a part of the evolution of warfare. Ukraine, again, proves this. So it's granted that yes this means fewer people on the front lines, fewer front lines will exist in general as new targets open up to cheap drone warfare

I suspect that will be a catalyst for something tbd.

homeonthemtn··on The company I work for is losing all of its humanity, I don't know where to go
If you have been coding for 8 years and don't have marketable skills you are either naive/insecure or doing something very very wrong.

In either case, this job is clearly not healthy for you in several different ways

homeonthemtn··on If AI data centers are so great, why are they being built in secret?
I think you're being single minded about the reason people don't want them. Not everyone is hungry for giant construction projects regardless of the "jobs gain"
homeonthemtn··on If AI data centers are so great, why are they being built in secret?
So successful that data centers are everywhere? I'm not following the logic here.
homeonthemtn··on AI outperforms law professors in Stanford Law study
Personally I think this is very good. One of the hardest things out there is maintaining a society in the face of changing times and it's because law is dense and slow.

I think, in the right hands, this could be huge.

homeonthemtn··on Age verification for social media, the beginning of the end for a free internet?
Sure but that absolute opposition hasn't, as far I can tell at least, achieved an iota of success. So it's largely a self indulgent merit badge than an actual strategy.
