holsta··on Ask HN: What's on your home server?
> - Windows workstation/gaming desktop (lives in a rack-mount case connected to a KVM; cables run upstairs to my 'office')

I am thinking about doing this. What cables are you running and what display resolution is the system running? I am thinking I could get away with a single DP cable for 4K display and a powered USB cable going to a USB hub.

Do you have a KVM you would recommend?

holsta··on Debloating Windows 10 with one command and no internet scripts
> [..] it’s a great one-line, easily memorable tool for cleaning up a PC quickly for an industrial use case without any security risks.

I deal with many OT/ICS vendors and they would all refuse to support their app on a Windows system modified in this manner. I think such an article should mention the -WhatIf option, so you get an idea of all the important things about to be removed.

    Get-AppxPackage | Remove-AppPackage -WhatIf
On my systems that includes VCLibs, .Net frameworks. I would not do this.
holsta··on Ask HN: Is there a negative stigma toward articles written in Medium?
I don't click Medium links anymore.

Once they popped up a "Let's make it official!" thing that wanted me to create an account, because apparently I can't read text over HTTP without handing over my name, email address and manage a password.

I also found the amount of trackers disgusting.

holsta··on Capacity Plan
I haven't looked. I do all those things internally. I would be terrified of abuse if someone else got ahold of internal planning documents.
holsta··on Capacity Plan
I agree that capacity planning is essential in almost all cases, but you don't want a macro-enabled document for this.

You want a database that is connected to approval processes, auditing, pay stubs, people's calendars, etc.

holsta··on Show HN: Porting OpenBSD Pledge() to Linux
Oh god yes please. If pledge() makes it into the mainline kernel, we OpenBSD-type people seem less weird when submitting patches for some syscall "nobody uses".

Many OpenBSD ports contain pledge() support. Steal all you can. OpenBSD does "hoisting" in many userland programs, meaning all the open calls and such take place at the very start but isn't actually parsed until after we have locked ourselves in with pledge() and unveil(). I hope this also means many non-base programs are redesigned in this manner.

holsta··on Ask HN: Is anyone using Fastmail for their business?
I am still on Fastmail. Their on-boarding is strong. Very other places have a similar on-boarding / import tool built right in.
holsta··on Ask HN: Is anyone using Fastmail for their business?
Disclaimer: I used to care enough about problems to write to support. I got canned responses to the point where I have stopped writing to them.

I am two years into Fastmail. Fastmail's web UI is meh.

I find that when I accept invites from customers, and then move the event from eg. my Billable calendar to Sales, the event is listed as "No response" -- when I respond again, the customer is sent another accept.

Showing other people's calenders gets confusing due to the default choice of colours.

The iOS app does not work offline.

The default SPF records are much too relaxed. I could understand if they just didn't enable SPF by default but allowed you to enable sane records.

You only need to scratch at the surface to find problems: https://internet.nl/site/fastmail.com

I could go on.

holsta··on Apple Studio Display Contains 64GB of Storage, but Only 2GB Used
> Why the fuck does a monitor need an embedded OS?!

I doubt this is new. The Dell U2718Q I am using right now can "crash" so that video input still works but none of the buttons do until I yank the power cord and plug it back in.

holsta··on PaperTerm Concept, An e-paper remote terminal device
I have a Remarkable 2 -- it doesn't have a good SSH client nor supports an external keyboard, as far as I know.
holsta··on Ask HN: What are you using to replace shared iCloud Photos albums?
I have been using (the open source) Syncthing for both personal things and business for many years. You don't need to set up a central server, just share folders via other clients.

If you do, however, set up a server, you can centralize your data and easily run all the backup jobs from it.

holsta··on An app that swiftly sends CPR volunteers to heart attack sufferers in Denmark
Anecdote: Three runners showed up in minutes at 4am when someone on my street suffered a cardiac arrest, beating the ambulance by +5 minutes.

There are so many ways to be cynical about the 4% to 16% improvement, but I think this is the most important takeaway:

> “The patient is dead” — meaning his or heart has stopped due to cardiac arrest — “and if you don’t do anything, 9 out of 10 will be dead forever,” he said.
