holigot··on Apple has locked my Apple ID, and I have no recourse. A plea for help
What a nightmare - hope everything will end well.

Concerning all those 'bricked' devices it would be really nice to get some more details concerning the 'block'.

Can you use your iPhone to call someone, can you use your MacBook overall? Login, use Apple Passwords(!), looking at photos within photos app and so on...

Or are all those devices completely locked?

holigot··on Major outage at mail host Migadu
Is there any comment from Migadu, why it happened?
holigot··on Tell HN: I'm getting spam on an email address only ever used to sign up to HN
As far as I know they don't. At least within my interface it is telling me so.
holigot··on Twilio confirms data breach after hackers leak 33M Authy user phone numbers
Wise words! Most of the people think, that Strongboxsafe is an Open Source App, which is definitely not the case!

Overall a good app, but if you want true Open Source KeePassium is the app to choose.

So you don't like 1PW - but what's the alternative in your opinion?

Don‘t know if Strongbox is working well? Developed by a single programmer… and no Audits available.
holigot··on Bug in reader/writer locks in Windows API
Good question.

It really is a tough choice. Microsoft does have the best products for their and mobile platforms (including iOS,iPadOS) with really good Offline Features and so on. But it still is Microsoft and Exchange behind...

A better product is Fastmail. But also US Servers and AUS company and a lot of downsides concerning offline usage and other privacy points.

What else? I try to avoid Google as much as I can.... Well there is Proton with it's Proton Suite getting better and better. There is german mailbox.org (worse 2FA) but overall a good privacy mail provider with own domains. There is migadu.com from Switzerland with EU Servers (rented at OVH Data Centers) and some other players like Tuta and others...

holigot··on Bug in reader/writer locks in Windows API
Especially the point about Fastmail really is a good point! You nailed it with your comment. With JMAP in particular, they have been given huge potential with a huge feature set but have not implemented it (especially not in their own products). Especially Offline Usage...
holigot··on Fastmail comes up with new plans (incl. Duo and Family)
Hi,

yes - I'm also a bit perplexed. Looks like they do some sort of 'testing'? No one knows...

holigot··on Fastmail comes up with new plans (incl. Duo and Family)
Super statement! Thank you.

Fastmail does also have contacts within their portfolio and you can manage own (static) websites with their service. They do really have a great feature set.

They're the developers of JMAP (with great features for now and in future), they do have Masked Mails built-in and much more.

Overall a great service!

holigot··on Show HN: Swift Mail. Fastmail's modern mail standard delivered natively on macOS
Hi,

thanks for this nice App. Will have a look at it.

There is another cool app coming up. It's called FMail2 http://fmail-app.fr

Maybe it's also interesting to compare it. Just to let you know about.

holigot··on Fastmail comes up with new plans (incl. Duo and Family)
Hi,

you need to register a new account - then you can see the new plans (and you also get a 10% discount when choosing them).

But this is only for new customers.

holigot··on Fastmail comes up with new plans (incl. Duo and Family)
Yes - it is. But be aware that's a 12 month plan. If you renew every month it's $14 which actually also is a good price!

So sad to see, that it's only available for new customers.

holigot··on Diseconomies of scale in fraud, spam, support, and moderation
Thx for this detailed feedback.

Is there any reason why you did change mail away from Fastmail after such a long time and now use Google as Mailserver?

holigot··on Trello Allegedly Breached
You got banned while using a Fastmail address? That's hard.
holigot··on Tell HN: Swiss surveillance monitoring nearly everything – impact on Proton etc?
Overall it seems that the best way is to use some provider like Proton or use PGP locally. Everything else seems to be insecure. And if not know than with a press release in near/future time saying that country X or Y is making it like other countries did already.

So it's all about encryption.

holigot··on Tell HN: Swiss surveillance monitoring nearly everything – impact on Proton etc?
Wow. Well done and thanks for the detailed explanation!

Interested in what others like Migadu and/or Infomaniak will report on this points!

holigot··on Tell HN: Swiss surveillance monitoring nearly everything – impact on Proton etc?
Yes - but I think this one is one step further.
holigot··on Migadu.com and Gmailify.com from the same founders? Isn't that a contradiction?
Appreciate your feedback. That's a part of that, what I was thinking about. Isn't it kind of shady behaviour? Don't get me wrong. I do really like Migadu. But that's really weird?!
holigot··on Migadu.com and Gmailify.com from the same founders? Isn't that a contradiction?
Thanks for your feedback. Yes. You're right. But on the one hand saying that Google is evil and on the other hand making a product which is based on Google?!
holigot··on Migadu.com and Gmailify.com from the same founders? Isn't that a contradiction?
Hi. Thx for your reply.

And no - of course not. I'm really just interested in that point as I know Migadu for many years now and i can't understand how you can be so against Google (Gmail) on the one hand and then launch a product on the market that works more or less directly with Google or is based on it.

Or am I fundamentally misunderstanding something here? Hence my question here.

holigot··on Migadu.com and Gmailify.com from the same founders? Isn't that a contradiction?
Today I found out, that at least one of the founders and people behind excellent Migadu.com Service also introduced Gmailify.com as a service. Actually the service Gmailify.com sounds also really nice.

But what I don't understand is, that the people behind Migadu also create a service like Gmailify. Migadu has a clear statement against Gmail and other big players in email-industry. They do also publish a separate site showing the points against Google and Gmail: 'The Case Against Gmail': https://www.migadu.com/blog/gmail/

Is it only me, who doesn't understand how this can be the statements of the same people, or is it all about the money at all?

I like Migadu - I like their approach and statements and really like to be their customer (also because of these statements).

What is your opinion on this, or do you think i'm exaggerating and shouldn't be so petty?

holigot··on After self-hosting email for 23 years I have thrown in the towel (2022)
Switzerland means nearly nothing within this context.

Have a look at their pro/cons (in general really good): https://www.migadu.com/procon/#in-switzerland-but-servers-ar...

holigot··on iOS Wi-Fi Profile Generator
mailbox.org still gives out those profiles... but with no renewal...
holigot··on Jeff Johnson: "Passkeys are a lie and contradiction."
So what to do? Use 1Password, Bitwarden use iCloud Keychain or something different like Enpass, KeePass, Strongbox or something else to sync it local?
holigot··on Migadu.com – Purpose of the company "...advertising and marketing..." hm?
Yes if course, but then you don't need this clame

But you don't need something like that within your official registration, or am I wrong?

What you also should not forget is that their name before Migadu was "Advite GmbH". I know, this has nothing to say...

But in my opinion a clear statement why they're having this within their official registration would be nice.

holigot··on Migadu.com – Purpose of the company "...advertising and marketing..." hm?
Yes - I understand what you mean. But what they're saying is what I think they're doing. Everything else would mean they're lying.

And after all their statements on their website are clean and well written (in my opinion).

On the other hand the official document is saying something different - that's why I'm asking.

holigot··on Migadu.com Hosting within OVH datacenters – secure?
Hi and thanks for the detailed answer.

That really sounds like it should be.

holigot··on Migadu.com Hosting within OVH datacenters – secure?
Thx for all the feedback. I thought, that maybe someone knows it. But ok - I think I will ask them when I do find time to test them.
