hokua··on Stripe updates policy: free refunds and chargebacks
Hell yeah!! Time to move to stripe.
hokua··on Touch Laptops
I do get the feeling that Atwood has become a MS marketing tool. I wonder how much free stuff he is getting for these posts.
hokua··on Regression and extraction
App Stores are monopolistic on the platform they serve. If I want to build Mac Apps, I have to go through the App Store. Yes, I could make it a web app, but that would limit the types of apps I can create.
hokua··on Regression and extraction
Before he listed the threats, I immediately thought "App stores" due to my recent debacle with Apple. Bam, there it was listed. Great article.
hokua··on Chartio (YC S10) Improves The Way You Visualize Your Data
Nice work Chartio team!
hokua··on Talk About Your Startup Idea with Paul Graham
What would make more money: Paul Graham lunches everyday for a month at a lower price or limiting supply to 1 Paul Graham lunch at the coming auction price?
hokua··on Talk About Your Startup Idea with Paul Graham
too late =)
hokua··on Show HN: Statwing is statistical analysis, simplified
Similar to what Swivel was trying to do. Great idea, nice execution, but really how will you monetize this? There is no real market for consumer grade "intuitive" statistical software. While this will appeal to casual data analyzers, these users arnt ready to spend much money on tools. And those doing data analysis for a living prefer their power tools: R, SAS, Matlab, NumPy, etc.
hokua··on Ask HN: Anyone making a living from Desktop apps?
Its really all due to the Mac App Store. Having a free lite version helps. My conversion from lite to paid is around 6%
hokua··on Ask HN: Anyone making a living from Desktop apps?
What is definitely dead are Java Swing apps. I believe desktop BCC was a Swing app. Swing app installation and updates are a major pain.

Native apps on an App Store dont suffer from these issues, and their ability to integrate with special OS features make them more compelling vs a web app. Not so with Swing.

hokua··on Ask HN: Anyone making a living from Desktop apps?
The books by Aaron Hillegass are good. I also like the Cocoa book by David Chisnall.
hokua··on Ask HN: Anyone making a living from Desktop apps?
Ah, OK. I need to read slower.
hokua··on Ask HN: Anyone making a living from Desktop apps?
> I love the desktop, but that's really not where users are anymore.

Depends on the application and the targeted user. There will always be a demand for apps for the "truck" users. But you are right, the desktop is overkill for the vast majority of people only using computers for email and social media. If they are your target, good luck. For the majority of developers, prices for apps that target these users is a race to the bottom.

hokua··on Ask HN: Anyone making a living from Desktop apps?
Im make about $2k/mo off a Mac App
hokua··on 17 Year Old Builds a Better Search Engine
Wow. The most wonkish think I remember from high school is learning about the Balmer series (atom spectral emissions)
hokua··on 17 Year Old Builds a Better Search Engine

hokua··on 1 in 2 new college graduates are jobless or underemployed
Totally. In fact, colleges should publish outcome stats -- what percent graduating in degree X got a job in their field within 9 months? And at what median starting salary? Dismal numbers would cause many students to reconsider that Psych degree, or at least realize they are really undertaking a 4 year vacation.
hokua··on 1 in 2 new college graduates are jobless or underemployed
Too many people confuse a college degree with functional skills. College is a good place to gain functional skills, but in the age of grade inflation, a degree does not imply you've gained any.
hokua··on Anonymous takes down Department of Justice and Universal Music
good point, in other words its a bunch of guys without girlfriends.
hokua··on Ask HN: how do comparison websites prevent scraping?
One idea is to put sensitive data into an image (for example the prices), and only serve the image to the user. While images themselves can be scraped, it is much harder than text.
hokua··on Elsevier = Evil
Im not sure why scientists are still publishing in Elsevier journals nowadays. Pre-internet, OK, but now I think journals should be following the model used by the Journal of Machine Learning Research, open on the internet.
hokua··on Looking for a Job? Learn Ruby, Python and be a Team Player (infographic)
You are correct
hokua··on More Paypal nonsense
Im guessing this rant was submitted and upvoted by the developers of Stripe. Paypal works.
hokua··on Khan Academy Gets 5 Million to Expand Faculty & Platform & to Build a School
I think Khan should be a teacher at least for a year. He would realize his stuff is a great for those students who already have access to good mentors (parents, teachers). But for those students with parents who don't value education and are stuck in bad schools, these students need a good teacher not video lectures. My point is that let's not pretend KA addresses the fundamental problem in Ed.
hokua··on Khan Academy Gets 5 Million to Expand Faculty & Platform & to Build a School
Someone has to first motivate the students to use the KA resources. My point is that let's not pretend that KA solves the fundamental problem.
