hojjat12000··on Amp: Vi-like terminal editor written in Rust
I think most people don't know that instead of :wq or :q! they can just ZZ and ZQ
hojjat12000··on Wezterm – A GPU-accelerated cross-platform terminal emulator and multiplexer
I'm using Gnome. And alacritty draws it's own decoration. But they are out of place and more importantly they don't behave like normal windows. For example to maximize a window normally I double click the title-bar but alacritty (I think it's winnit's fault) doesn't react to that. The button placements in the titlebar is also weird and needs me to be really accurate to click the close (x) button.
hojjat12000··on Wezterm – A GPU-accelerated cross-platform terminal emulator and multiplexer
AFAIK Alacritty is not a multiplexer. Using something like tmux in Alacritty, makes the output slow (because tmux has its own buffer etc). I'm hoping that this doesn't have that issue because it is also a multiplexer.

Another issue I have with Alacritty is that it looks ugly on Wayland (because of lack of user window decoration), I'm not sure if this has somehow solved that issue (building against gnome or something).

I love Alacritty, but for my setup it doesn't work. Looking really hard for a fast and snappy replacement.

hojjat12000··on Gnome 40
I think GTK4 is in Gnome 40 Weather App.
hojjat12000··on Gnome 40
This is a dead meme. Boring and annoying specially to the Gnome developers. I have used Gnome for many years now. Never have this been an issue. If you look at the issue tracker[1], they are open to pull requests to add the thumbnail, we just need one person who cares about this feature!

There are many other issues with Gnome that actually is their decision and it is a problem. This specific one is a GTK issue. But for example their decision on window decoration in wayland is just wrong and makes the whole environment look weird[2].

hojjat12000··on Telegram: Voice Chats 2.0:Channels, Millions of Listeners, Recorded Chats
That is the first thing that I thought about. I know a lot influencers (political and not) on telegram. They can host live radio shows (and record it and call it a podcast). It's great. I'm curious what the community comes up with these new features.
hojjat12000··on Outrun: Execute local command using processing power of another Linux machine
This is very clever. I know that if you are using this solution a lot for the same purpose (let's say rendering) then it would be beneficial to come up with a more efficient setup for your particular application.

But this could be very useful for ad hoc, or just spur of the moment things. Let's say I have a few servers that I have access to. Whenever I need to do something computation heavy and it could be something different everytime. Sometimes transcoding a video, sometimes compiling a library in rust. I just outsource them to the servers and keep using my laptop doing other stuff.

hojjat12000··on Show HN: Obsidian - OTP Authenticator
Obsidian is supposed to be a super tough type of stone (in the Minecraft game, in reality it's like glass, it's brittle and shatters easily, but because of the game everybody thinks Obsidian is tough). OTP Authenticator implying that it's tough like obsidian makes more sense, than a Markdown Editor. Of course, this is my opinion and I don't know why either of them called their project Obsidian.
hojjat12000··on Show HN: Obsidian - OTP Authenticator
To be fair it makes a lot more sense to call an OTP authenticator, obisdian, than a Markdown editor.
hojjat12000··on Show HN: Obsidian - OTP Authenticator
I got confused for a second. I thought they added OTP to the Markdown editor that I use[1]. I wonder if the name "Obsidian" is gaining more popularity because of the recent surge in Minecraft's player base.

hojjat12000··on Bitwarden_rs: Unofficial Bitwarden compatible server written in Rust
I'm using KeePass. On Linux, windows and android and Google drive to sync the database. it is a hassle. The graphics look terrible. And most of the times the keeweb plugin doesn't really work on Firefox and I have to copy paste the password. But I have been using it for a long time now and got used to it. The best thing about it is the plugin system. I would not suggest it, I think bit warden does all of this and is a lot more user friendly.
hojjat12000··on Pangolin – Mobile AMD laptop with Ryzen CPU and Radeon graphics
I couldn't find any laptops with the new Ryzen mobile on this website.
hojjat12000··on Out of the top fifty games on Steam, 70% work on Linux
Maybe this person saw the recent post on HN about Flameshot (and supporting Wayland) and thought "Oh... you can't even take a screenshot on Linux".

I think the best distro for gaming is Pop_OS!. They have a pretty reliable set of software and they also have an NVIDIA version of the distro which is great for newbies. It also comes with Flathub (instead of Snap) by default so latest version of most of the softwares that newbies will use are available (such as Spotify, Slack... and everything else Electron).

hojjat12000··on Adobe Photoshop's 'super resolution' made my jaw hit the floor
I think the artist impression has a lot more value than a highly realistic generated face. If you see an artistic impression, you will see the facial features that were noticeable. Such as a mole, the shape of the nose, or the thickness of the eyebrows. Then you have a template that your brain uses to match those features with any face that you see. However, if I show you a highly realistic face, your brain will take a different impression. Your brain is trained on faces for thousands of years. It will try to match the face perfectly.

An artist impression tells the audience that it is inaccurate. A realistic photo tells the audience that this is _exactly_ who we are looking for.

hojjat12000··on Adobe Photoshop's 'super resolution' made my jaw hit the floor
Actually the opposite. These algorithms are more susceptible to noise, they may generate sharp perfect license plate numbers (that are totally fabricated and completely wrong) from a blurry image. But by no means should you even consider the results to have hints of truth.

GAN produces totally different results if you slightly change the input.

So, as others are also saying, these "enhances" are great for decoration and absolutely should be ignored as facts or truth (specially when it comes to face and license plate and others used by the law enforcement).

hojjat12000··on Flameshot – Simple, powerful screenshot tool for all major operating systems
I started using Wayland about a month ago on both my work computer and my laptop (On Pop_OS! 20.10). After seeing too much graphical glitches and weird behavior, specially because Alacritty (my favorite terminal) did not have any window decoration (I read through the whole issue on Gnome's issue tracker for server side decoration and got a little disappointed), I stopped using it on my work PC. But still I'm using it on my laptop. I haven't had any issues there, but I just use my laptop for some web surfing and zoom. Screen capture is a hassle too. I was trying to capture only a part of my screen and had to do an hour worth of research to finally decide to just switch to X.org and get the job done. It's great that Flameshot is now supporting Wayland, and it's great that it is trying to support all the common protocols.
hojjat12000··on Procrastination is flight, deadline is fight, freeze is staring at the screen

hojjat12000··on NYTimes Peru N-Word: My side of the story, in four parts
These are article about how something he said was taken out of context. He is talking about "himself" because that's the topic!

This is not an article in the Times. This is a post in his blog explaining how he lost his job!

Why would you say that?

hojjat12000··on NYTimes Peru N-Word: My side of the story, in four parts
I meant in my personal life. I make a joke, she gets offended. I can spend the next hour explaining the joke and how it wasn't supposed to be offensive. Or I just apologize. Of course, I'm a coward.
hojjat12000··on NYTimes Peru N-Word: My side of the story, in four parts
I do not know who this guy is.

I don't read the NYT.

I have a hard time reading long texts. I get distracted or bored real quick and switch to a different tab.

But these 4 articles were so interesting and horrifying to read I read them all in one setting. I'm sorry that this happened. This is a nightmare of mine. Someone gets a hold of some stupid thing that I said or did (as a joke back in college) or in this case as an honest attempt to explain stuff to teenagers, and now you have to go over every single word and explain yourself. and as soon as you start explaining yourself, you have lost the argument (I learned this when I tried to explain myself to my partner. I've learnt that no matter if I'm right or wrong, I should just apologize. It's faster and less painful.)

hojjat12000··on Judge in Google case disturbed that 'incognito' users are tracked
You can still log into the porn website and watch your recommended videos. But after you close that window, no history of that ever happening is stored on your local machine. No urls, history, or cookies.
hojjat12000··on Judge in Google case disturbed that 'incognito' users are tracked
Because "incognito mode" is not about tracking! It is about saving information on your local machine. If you are in incognito mode and log into Gmail, you will see your own email! You are not incognito to Gmail. It used to be called "porn mode". I think that's a better name for incognito. It is there to stop others who use your computer to spy on you. Ofcourse you can use incognito (assuming you don't log into anything) and be reasonably anonymous (there are many other things that can track you even in incognito). I think it just need a rebranding. I vote "porn mode".
hojjat12000··on Linux Capabilities in a nutshell (2019)
Mine has it. I'm guessing it is checking for a library and if it exists then it shows the icon because it showed up after a few seconds.

There are about a 100 different voices that I can choose from and they all suck.

A few months ago we trained a pretty nice DNN TTS engine and I wish I had the permission to release as a free software for Linux. I feel Linux has been in need of a good TTS forever.

hojjat12000··on 50 Years of Pascal
C was ported to any platform. Free crap (when it comes to programming languages) win, because they can be used everywhere therefore a better thing to learn. For example, Borland never opened the sources of the compiler, and Turbo Pascal has never been ported to platforms other than DOS/Windows.

Free crap in other areas (such as computer graphics) did not win over purchased quality. For example graphics designers even choose their Operating System based on available (non-free) quality software.

hojjat12000··on Falling sperm counts, declining egg quality, and endocrine disruptors
That video (which has nothing to do with biology, and is related to discussion and arguments, the thing we are doing now) is 16 minutes long. Are you seriously suggesting that with 16 minutes of reading biology I will know:

  * What is aromatase and what is the relationship between an overexpressed aromatase and excess body fat
  * What is estradiol and what is the possible reasons for converting testosterone to estradiol
  * What is the negative feedback loop in the hypothalamus and what is the interactions between estradiol and the hypothalamus' negative feedback loop
  * What is GnRH and what causes the lowering of my GnRH
  * What is LH/FSH and why is it obvious that low GnRH causes a lower LH/FSH
  * How are these related to fertility
All of this in 16 minutes?

IMPORTANT: To be honest I am willing to read (obviously more than 16 minutes) to learn about this stuff, as you can see in my comment, I'm asking for something to read! a link to a place that explains these. Even if it takes more than 16 minutes. Of course, I'm sure somewhere on the internet these information exist. But just writing a claim without any citation, is not helpful.

hojjat12000··on Falling sperm counts, declining egg quality, and endocrine disruptors
Did you really? You understood the "very clear mechanism"? Can you repeat the mechanism? Do you know what GnRH and LH/FSH are?

Does this comment prove to you that there is a biological explanation? Or does it say some technical terms that might be disputed? Maybe only a small portion of biologists think this way and the majority disagree!

I understand the English part! What I'm saying is this comment without a source doesn't prove a "very clear mechanism".

hojjat12000··on Falling sperm counts, declining egg quality, and endocrine disruptors
I understand that and I really really want to believe them. But this biological explanation could be obvious (to a biologist) or could be heavily controversial (among biologists). A reputable source would be helpful for us the non-biologist to know that this is either common knowledge or this is the SOTA, recent breakthrough, or simply disputed theory. That's what I was trying to say. Cheers.
hojjat12000··on Falling sperm counts, declining egg quality, and endocrine disruptors
I did not say they are nonsense, or obscure. I said "technical jargon".

I said to most of the audience, this doesn't mean anything, and to those that this means something, they probably already know this anyways.

So, for the general public (non-biologists) you have to either explain it differently (at least don't use acronyms). or at least cite a reputable website so that we, normies, know you are not trolling!

hojjat12000··on Samsung now updates Android for longer than Google does
I also have a Oneplus 6T and it has been running android 10 for a year now. It also receives security updates frequently.

If you are talking about android 11, it is also in the works. Maybe in a few months the first beta will come out. They have confirmed that 6T will receive the update though.

hojjat12000··on Falling sperm counts, declining egg quality, and endocrine disruptors
I was recently watching a video on Doublespeak[0], one of the types of doublespeak is to bombard the audience with technical jargon which means you automatically win, unless they know more technical terms than you do! In your case, your comment does not mean anything to me (or probably 99% of the HN users). Instead of this, you could at least cite a reputable source for this claim, this would be 100 times more effective and also useful for the readers. Cheers.
