hoelle··on What a stupid idea
> it certainly isn't contributing to the culture in a meaningful way

I can refute that directly. My wife uses Pinterest to learn about recipes, craft projects for her and our kids, cleaning tips. Sharing this information with your community is the definition of culture.

Social media is a huge value to a transplant family living in a far off city from their family all so the husband can work in his chosen field.

hoelle··on The Technology-Driven Consumption Trap
Yeah, I don't know why we're blaming facebook. Seems like Industrialization has been "killing the economy" for a while.[1] But I think unskilled labor is still doing okay... as long as you'll work cheaper than machines (which is why the demand for illegal immigrants is still so high).

hoelle··on The end of :hover?
There could be some fun ways to simulate hover on touch devices.

Perhaps a drag gesture across an area can work as a hover? Probably won't work great if context stuff pops up directly under your finger.

Better/crazier plan: the new iPhone has a user-facing camera. How hard is it to get some eye-tracking software going?

hoelle··on Save My Life - help a fellow HN'er
only verified MDs or med students / professionals

I wouldn't underestimate the expertise of regular people living with a disease. Parents of sick kids, especially.

hoelle··on Poe's Law
Stephen Colbert is a good example. Seen a few people not realize he's a satirist right away.
hoelle··on Android Project Changeset 4f8b683: libc/memset.c
Removing the memsets from the networking layer of one of my projects basically halved the frametime of that system (which was a bottleneck).

I'm all for defensive programming, but when you need to be fast, you'll just have to make sure it's correct.

hoelle··on Android Project Changeset 4f8b683: libc/memset.c
I'll offer the tip that even if you have a fast memset, you can and should avoid using it when possible.

Seeing memset is usually a sign that someone is being lazy about watching the length of their buffers and/or verifying their copies aren't off-by-one.

hoelle··on EA Sports Locks Out Multiplayer Modes On Used Sales
EA is selling one ticket for a ride in a car, not the car itself.

Just because courts have ruled that the ticket coming on a disk means you can resell the disk, doesn't mean EA has no right to find a way to tear the ticket.

hoelle··on EA Sports Locks Out Multiplayer Modes On Used Sales
Non-transferable licenses are a great idea because makers should get paid for their work.

It's unfortunate the courts have ruled against this when the delivery medium (the disk) is sold on a store shelf. It's like making a movie theater let patrons resell their tickets to be used for a later show.

I expect the eventual result is that everyone will move their content online. See the rise of Steam, XBLA, and soon services like OnLive.

The tone and popularity of this sort of reply really bothers me. The grandparent is the best explanation of the actual business decision in the entire thread. How was any of it "straw man"?

Trying to get paid for your product when someone uses it isn't any more of a "cash grab" than any other company selling any other product for money. In other industries when a maker sees no share of the sale of his work, we usually find a way to call what happened to him what it is: theft.

If EULAs were enforced, the situation would be different since the "non transferable license" would maybe kill the commercial used games market.

hoelle··on We Have Met the Enemy and He Is PowerPoint
For me, Powerpoint has always been a handy tool for limping through speaking in front of others. Handy source of notes, gives the audience something to stare at that isn't me.

Probably not the best aide for /improving/ at public speaking, though.

hoelle··on On Geeks and Gays
Right, what about those who claim being homosexual is a choice? To blur the line more, what about killers who are insane?
hoelle··on Do celebrities die in threes?
I wonder if that will convince my wife. Probably not.

Her stats superstitions drive me crazy. Ever heard of the Chinese birth calendar? For example: http://www.webwomb.com/chinesechart.htm.

90%+ accuracy should be an easy claim to bust. Unfortunately for me it's been right for our kids 2 out of 2 times. Why are stats always so hard to sell over anecdotal experience?

hoelle··on [dead]
Reminds me of the movie Mimic. What would we have to change for roaches to grow to be man-sized?

If I remember right, the movie scientists were mainly concerned about how the critters would get enough air.

Natural history suggests the same, long before us when the air was a lot more oxygen rich, bugs were a lot bigger!

hoelle··on Being Funny: How Steve Martin got his act together
The really interesting thing to me is how much work it took him to earn his success. In his book "Born Standing Up" he goes more into his adolescence, where he learned stagecraft, acting, and improvisation. Then as a comedian, years of refining his odd formula until he became great at it.
hoelle··on Bloom Unveils Its Game Changing Energy Box
In a chemical sense, no difference, but fire is complicated. Check out Wikipedia articles on Redox, Radicals, Combustion, etc.

Fuel cells are cool because they grab electricity straight from the freed electrons as the fuel is oxidized. More efficient than using the heat to make steam to power a turbine to spin electromagnets, your typical power plant.

hoelle··on Ask HN: Solution for eye strain?
I recommend (in addition to the other tips here) that you try switching your IDE to a variable width font.

Heresy, I know, but reading is about shape recognition, which is more difficult in mono-spaced fonts.

hoelle··on Ask HN: Solution for eye strain?
I made a similar shift a few years back. If you use Visual Studio (at least older versions), it can be a bit stubborn about applying color changes. Restarting it helps.
hoelle··on Most MMO companies are "rudderless ships of doomed people"
I'm an MMO hacker that's shipped one unsuccessful game and one moderately successful game, and I have to comment on some points made in this article.

-MMOs fail due to bad management, design

Partially true. All the elements need to be there, and bad technology seems to be the biggest crippling force in games. We need more good hackers in the field.

-Good MMO studios aren't hiring.

Not true, even today.

-MMO studios all have terrible quality of life, pay, benefits.

Not true. Startup studios might, but if you're going into that situation you're either getting profit sharing, or a beginner getting a foot in the door.

-MMO engines don't exist, tech isn't reused.

This is becoming less true, but the third party tech out there is still untested. It's unlikely a great MMO company will sell its tech like Epic does with Unreal, since we need long term customers, and can't afford to undercut ourselves.

-Don't work in games unless you are a gaming fanatic.

Loving gameplay helps if you want to be a gameplay coder, but MMOs are vast. Networking, graphics, AI, scalability, the problems to be solved are endless. If you're bored at your job, I recommend giving the games industry a look.
