hobos_delight··on AI-powered cameras become new tool against mass shootings
ED-209 was from the first Robocop.
hobos_delight··on Show HN: 30 Hour Jobs – a job board for shorter work weeks
I'm a manager in SRE at Google, and one of my reports went to 50% time in Q4 last year.

So far this has worked quite well, and the support the company has provided to me as the manager, and to the report has been excellent.

There are some tooling issues (especially around oncall) - but otherwise it has been quite a smooth transition.

hobos_delight··on Ask HN: Best things in your bash_profile/aliases?
My muscle memory is to set on CTRL+L, ls. But I like it, and the call back to DOS days :)
hobos_delight··on Visual Studio Code 1.30 Released
Thanks I'll check it out!
hobos_delight··on Visual Studio Code 1.30 Released
I've actually migrated to it from emacs for rust stuff - the RLS integration is really nice and it works well enough on both osx and linux.

I tried to use the git UI that it provides, but in the end preferred to manage my vcs from the terminal.

I'm reasonably happy with it - and I didn't think this was going to be the case when I first tried it out.

hobos_delight··on The neglected benefits of the commute
I used to commute in Sydney, 90 minutes door-to-door of which ~60 was on the train.

As I would leave early I would normally get a seat and spent that time triaging issues or writing code or just working on my own stuff - it was nice.

I moved overseas and my commute went to 15 minutes on the bicycle - it was much better for my health and well-being as well as being able to have breakfast with my kids, and be home in time for dinner - these didn't happen when I was spending 90 minutes a day commuting.

Since moving back to Sydney our requirements as a family were to find a place that was similar to what we had overseas - short commute for me and walking distance to shops / schools.

Some days I look back on the commute with rose-coloured glasses and the time I had to myself, but I often forget the amount of times I had to forgo social activities or the hours I spent waiting for missed or delayed trains. And of course with my kids getting older I wouldn't give up the time with them to sit on my bum on a train :)

hobos_delight··on Windows chief Terry Myerson out as Microsoft reorganizes
I have the same experience - on-board sound, usb dac (primary) and hdmi audio interface on an nvidia card.

Every so often it will "forget" that it should be using the usb dac and revert to the hdmi audio output.

hobos_delight··on U.S. To Seek Social Media Details from All Visa Applicants
> You can just get on a plane and fly over.

Not quite - you will need an ESTA - a visa waiver, and the airlines (usually) check before you board that you have a current one.

But they are valid for two years, and trivial to get via the webapp.

hobos_delight··on TV advertising has hit a wall thanks to streaming options like Netflix
30 hours per person per weeks seems absurdly high to me - that would be one 3 hour program every week-night, two (6 hours) on Saturday and three (9 hours) on Sunday.

I would be really keen to see what some actual values are, and the breakdown by age group.

I've recently moved into a new place and we haven't even wired up the TV arial, and even with a Netflix subscription, it's mainly for the kids shows - and even then we heavily restrict the amount of time they can watch TV.

Consumption for my wife and I now is generally Netflix if they have a show we like, or Plex for specific shows we can't get on Netflix - even then this would top out at _maybe_ a couple of hours a week.

Time on reddit/hn is a completely different story...

hobos_delight··on How I got to 200 productive hours a month
I just finished this[1] book with tips about how to get back into that deep work routine, and whilst I'm not there yet - there have been some immediately tangible benefits.

Like turning off work email push notifications, developing a routine (for my study after work - MSCS) and scheduling all parts of my day and sticking to them.

It's not a long book, but I highly recommend it.

hobos_delight··on Ask HN: What is your profession?
Technical Program Manager, though I miss writing code and managing teams.

If I could write rust and manage teams, I would be a happy man!

hobos_delight··on Let's Code a TCP/IP Stack: TCP Retransmission
I love this series - it is what inspired me to have a crack at it in rust (https://github.com/rthomas/rust_net) - however I am only at the stage of responding to arping, and other shiny things have come along to distract me.
hobos_delight··on BCHS stack – BSD, C, httpd, SQLite
They are both built on top of Hyper, which I believe now has async io.
hobos_delight··on “I was just asked to balance a Binary Search Tree by JFK's airport immigration”
This has become a lot better in the US now too - I can use my Australian passport at their self-serve kiosks when travelling on an ESTA that has a renewal.

You still have to talk to the immigration officer though - everyone does.

hobos_delight··on An Email Thread Between a Developer and Gigster
Yes, basically. For open-source projects where google retains the copyright you don't need special permission (it is part of your job, basically). For personal stuff or where you wish to retain the copyright then you will need it assigned to you.
hobos_delight··on RMS: Beware of Contradictory “Support”
> JavaScript is many things, but nonfree isn't one of them.

I believe he is referring to the license to use/modify the JS being delivered by Airbnb specifically in this case, not the language itself.

hobos_delight··on The Rise of the Outrageously Long Commute
Almost 1 year ago I gave up a 90-minute each way train commute in Sydney for a 20-minute cycle commute in Ireland (obviously there were other factors).

I love the freedom to come and go when I please, and not be held up by seemingly random infrastructure failures that can ruin your whole evening.

I've actually found myself extending the bike route to get a bit more exercise in (when it's not lashing that is).

hobos_delight··on Ask HN: Internships in Australia?
Grads were generally an annual intake with interviews held around the start of the year (for the following year).

Interns were generally from the UNSW corporate placement program (though I can't remember the exact name for it).

Atlassian are a fantastic place to work - if you're in a position to apply for them I would highly recommend it.

Source: used to work there, hosted interns.
