hnxs··on Full text of Xi Jinping's speech on the CCP's 100th anniversary
Vietnam is the only one that comes to mind
hnxs··on Rethinking Triplebyte
The best thing I got out of Triplebyte was a great piece of written negotiation advice, from a recruiting specialist that has, presumably, since been laid off.
hnxs··on Amazon executives are worried they'll run out of people to employ
It makes managers look good on paper.
hnxs··on Study shows how taking short breaks may help our brains learn new skills
This is how I first learned programming at 25, then leetcoding five years later.
hnxs··on Hundreds of fishing vessels vanishing along Argentina’s waters
Who said anything about diverting it? Or destroying it, if that’s the next point your mind is going to.
hnxs··on An Introduction to Knowledge Graphs
I’d like to read more about what you worked on specifically if you’re willing to share!
hnxs··on The Missing Semester of CS Education
Fundamentals and algorithms are just as Google-able...
hnxs··on Study shows class bias in hiring based on few seconds of speech
Imagine you are someone who lives in Beijing meeting a person from the Chinese countryside for the first time. That should help you come up with answers to your questions.
hnxs··on Study shows class bias in hiring based on few seconds of speech
I think class is primarily dictated by three things on a superficial level, e.g ten minutes or less of a first interaction with someone:

- How you speak

- How you dress

- How physically attractive you are, specifically in regards to things like height, fitness, and angular features.

Skin color takes a backseat to these factors in the modern era

hnxs··on The Ponzi Career
Oof, I can’t take anything this author says seriously after his mention of Quibi in one of these articles. It didn’t lose to TikTok due to algorithms and luck, it lost because no one was interested in the content. The founders will blame that on covid, but I think they’re wrong. No one would have wanted it pre-pandemic either.
hnxs··on Facebook and Twitter algorithms incentivize 'people to get enraged'
Why, not who. Why aren’t they funding this research?
hnxs··on Facebook and Twitter algorithms incentivize 'people to get enraged'
Why would anyone fund said research?
hnxs··on My experience as a Gazan girl getting into Silicon Valley companies
doing both of the shitty things you’re describing at a FAANG right now, and I started during the pandemic

yeah, it’s way less enjoyable and fulfilling than previous jobs at small companies and startups, but:

- i have total control of my workhours, and i can work no more than 40 hours if i want to

- i get paid WAY more, and raises/promotions are nearly six figures worth of increased TC, instead of 1-10%

- i have clear career progression, and an actual mentoring system for once

- dont have to worry about my employer running out of money

- dont have to worry about getting fired with no notice or warning

- I’m more likely to get the things I want / ask for

- teammates are nicer and more competent

- ~prestige~

basically everything is better except the work itself. it’s a trade im willing to make

hnxs··on Apple Car: For Real This Time?
sounds amazing and i really want what you’re describing

i dont want to buy a new car (new as in replacing my current car,im ok with used cars) because theyre overpriced, but i dont want to lease either due to what i consider bullshit costs, plus lock-in. as a result, ive had the same car since 2009, despite easily being able to afford something new. but fuck that, id rather put that money towards investing

hnxs··on Workaholism leads to health problems, work addiction risk depends on occupation
For some, that something else is themselves.

I disagree with this submission title. Workaholism isn’t a cause of mental health problems, it’s a symptom.

hnxs··on Visa and Plaid Abandon Merger After Antitrust Division’s Suit to Block
I wonder if employees with equity will see any portions of the breakup fees as some sort of bonus.
hnxs··on Tensions in Google's ethical AI group increase as it sends demands to CEO
maybe her departure affects their promo cycles
hnxs··on Advanced Compilers: Self-Guided Online Course
“We can’t hire for x” almost always means “we can’t hire for x for what we’re willing to pay”
hnxs··on LinkedIn’s Alternate Universe
linkedin use cases:

former coworker rolodex

spamming internal recruiters to bypass portal applications

flexing on people who previously rejected you by adding them after you get a job at a way better employer

hnxs··on Ethical AI researcher Timnit Gebru fired from Google
Equity and bonuses. How can you not be familiar with how those work, and just how much they amplify TC and distort bands? Don’t know anyone in finance? You shouldn’t even need to since you’re in tech! Our spreads may not be as bad as theirs, but we can still easily see 3x differences when you take things like sign-on bonuses, target bonuses, initial RSU awards, refreshers, and vesting cliffs into account.
hnxs··on A Theory of Software Architecture
Would love to see your list of names if you’re willing to share!
hnxs··on The No-Code Generation is arriving
Article TLDR: Workers over ~30 love Excel. Younger workers are willing to try new webapps that are like Excel, but with squircles and in the cloud.

These tools include a number of SAAS startups whose marketing departments definitely did not pay Techcrunch any money to get plugged in this article.

Your job or career as a software engineer is not threatened, though the title was intended to make you feel that way in order to bait clicks. Assuming you don’t work on Excel, that is.

hnxs··on Trump gives Microsoft 45 days to clinch TikTok deal
I know where you’re going with this, but let’s all reflect on how China is currently winning.
hnxs··on When a customer refunds your paid app, Apple refunds its 30% cut [edited]
I’ve never had to pay shipping for an Amazon return.
hnxs··on Discrete Mathematics: An Open Introduction, 3rd edition
This is great. Is there anything else of similar methodology and quality for other math subjects? I would love any recommendations.
hnxs··on Citing revenue declines, Airbnb cuts 25% of workforce
Guessing most of their iOS teams will stay intact, but who knows.
hnxs··on Women: Learn to Program This Summer
If you ever make it out to the bay, you’ll see that white men, Asian men, and, to a much lesser extent (though much more represented than everyone other than the first two), Asian women make up the majority of the engineering workforce here.
