hnnh44··on ‘It’s like hell here’: Australia bakes as record temperatures nudge 50C
Wow. I skimmed the title and just read the article.

Aside from a single sentence mentioning homeless people mid way, nothing else in the article was geared towards the homeless.

Even the splash image at top was people lounging on a beach midday. Not something you'd associate with homeless people doing.

hnnh44··on Switching my parents over to Linux saved me a lot of headache and support calls
Isn't this what semantic versioning tried to address?

The customer has already paid for a dedicated bandwidth. If the ISP has used an outdated model that doesn't account for current usage, that's their problem. That's how business risk and models work.

They can, and should, respond by modifying their plans accordingly. Once the consumer's contract is up, renew them with a more modern usage model. Until then, you eat the cost for not doing your only job.

The theory that "we didn't build in a margin of error and therefore someone else is responsible" is dangerous to society.

ISPs SHOULD see losses. Their investors aren't entitled to guaranteed profits.

hnnh44··on Tim Cook: You Deserve Privacy Online. Here's How You Could Actually Get It
I'm all for it, but also acutely aware of the burden this brings.

Just like GDPR, mega corps will have no problems building out these processes and complying.

Small and mid size companies? Good luck to you all.

hnnh44··on Consumption of a dark roast coffee blend reduces DNA damage in humans
Thank you! I didn't know there was a term for it.
hnnh44··on Consumption of a dark roast coffee blend reduces DNA damage in humans
This is funny.

Just a while back there was an article posted about how studies SHOULD start out with defined objectives. The argument was that academics are so desperate to publish positive results that they'll draw any positive conclusion, even if it wasn't what the study started out trying to accomplish.

hnnh44··on Things I Learned from Chris Dixon about Startups (2015)
I actually found a lot of it insightful. Maybe I'm not as priviledged as you are to be exposed to this stuff on a regular basis. Maybe 99% of the population isn't living in this bubble either.

It wasn't what you need for your paticular situation, and that's fine. But the general hostility towards this is strange. Why did you feel the need to attack it instead of moving on with your day? Genuinely asking.

hnnh44··on Project Alias hacks Amazon Echo and Google Home to protect privacy
I'm wondering this too.

Like hey, let's install some under developed AI from some unknown company with unknown security policies on top of a device with access to hordes of personal data and the ability to make transactions online.

No hacker will EVER think to use it as an attack vector /s

hnnh44··on $1T is leaving Britain because of Brexit
You're assuming those "highly educated, creative, dynamic workforce" will stick around through the "short term" (decades?) pain rather than migrate.

Rather, as with Detroit, there's a good chance the best and brightest will take their talents where they'll be useful and well compensated.

The people with the least value and mobility will be what's left.

Being the pioneers doesn't mean they'll be the ultimate beneficiaries of it.

hnnh44··on Ask HN: Is it good idea to take protein supplements in your diet?
Nobody should be going to exhaustion on each set. It's not only unnecessary, it's counter productive.

Focusing on the big 3 for gaining mass is good advice. So is hiring a trainer - just make sure they walk the talk (they look like you want to look, not skinnyfat with a BS certificate)

hnnh44··on Ask HN: Canadian and American starting an online business?
One last (conflicting) note, is that the small business capital gains exemption on sale of shares in a Canadian owned business is a godsend.

https://financialpost.com/entrepreneur/plan-to-take-full-adv...

tl;Dr; 0% tax rate on selling shares up to $800,000 (+increasing with inflation). Terms and conditions apply - talk to an accountant.

hnnh44··on Ask HN: Canadian and American starting an online business?
Canadian operating a digital business here as well. Most of the above points are accurate.

One point I'll disagree with is the viability of s SRED. It's a documentation nightmare and hiring a consultant to file for you is basically mandatory - they take 25% of your return. IMO, not worth the distraction in general, and definitely not if you're questionably eligible due to u.s. status cofounder.

Canadian banks, even with USD accounts, are handicapped. ACH for example, is a non existent term at Canadian banks.

Canadian customers are fine paying USD, if your business is USD based. All your expenses/providers will be, so it only makes sense to bill in USD.

Nexus is a serious issue. Hire an accountant who is familiar with this. I learned for example, that _where your website is hosted_ is factored into the decision. You can claim to be Canadian, but offering services/downloads to u.s. customers served from a u.s. server counts as 100% u.s. As mentioned above, % of sales is another big factor. If you trip 51% (and you will, Canada is too small a market), you risk being assessed.

Incorporating and filing taxes will work out roughly the same in either country. I'd need the recommendation to incorporate in Delaware, and just file as a u.s. company.

hnnh44··on U.S. oil production to be equal to Russia plus Saudi Arabia by 2025
Can you provide a source for how this works? AFAIK the u.s. doesn't operate the oil rigs, and oil companies will operate in their own self interest.

Does the u.s. government pay oil companies to suspended operation?

hnnh44··on Blueprint for a more accessible internet
Serious question: who is paying me as a freelancer or small business owner to work on mobile accessibility? It's not the client.

The amount of work and hours put into developing and maintaining (nevermind learning from scratch) is hugely exceeded by the 10-15% potential increase in revenue, which I'm dubious about to begin with. Is the 200 hours/year it would take to maintain at $100/hr worth $20,000 in incremental revenue? I just don't seethat happening.

I don't disagree with most of the article, but the expectation that "you should do this without considering opportunity cost" makes the entire argument moot.

hnnh44··on Convert JPG, PNG, GIF Files to PDF, SVG, EPS Vectors
It all depends how complex (eg. How many vectors) the image your use is. I'm sure it can range by 100x.
hnnh44··on Convert JPG, PNG, GIF Files to PDF, SVG, EPS Vectors
I disagree. No one is entitled to free work.

I have no use for a subscription, but I need 2 logos converted to vectors. I'll happily pay the $10 for that then cancel the subscription.

Would a month access for $10 without a subscription be good? I think so. But he's obviously looking for customers with ongoing needs for the service.

hnnh44··on Rare brain-eating amoebas killed woman who rinsed her sinuses with tap water
Copper containers are actually great at killing bacteria.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3312355/

But high levels can cause health problems, including kidney damage and possibly cancer.

https://www.canada.ca/en/health-canada/programs/consultation...

Between dying of dysentery and risking long term health issues it's a simple choice.

But unless your doctor specifically tells you to add more copper, you shouldn't be going out of your way to get it.
