hnisnotreddit··on Valve has just started the PC games race to zero
Paid $75 (in 1987 money!) for The Legend of Zelda for the NES at a Toys "R" Us in Colma, CA. Sold all my Series 1 Voltron (with the toxic paint) at a garage sale to finance it. Still the most I've ever spent for a game, and it was worth every penny.

When I think about how expensive games appear to be nowadays, I think back to 8-year-old me and the sacrifices I made.

Hallucinogens have done wnders for my PTSD and depression issues. Please do not confuse them with Amphetamines or other non-hallucinogens.

That said, if you are on MAOI's or SSRI's, you would do well to end their use before attempting any hallucinogen stronger than cannabis.

Kijiji, the classifieds leader over Craigslist in Canada, is an eBay property. If the US has competition for eBay, the rest of the world seems to be sorely lacking in it.
hnisnotreddit··on US prosecutors drop link-related charges from Barrett Brown case?
In Canada, this would be grounds for "Malicious Prosecution", which is pretty much the only way to oust a prosecutor.

I've seen it done only once with my own eyes; Lawyer was disbarred, and the now-former lawyer "settled" the criminal charges as a pro-se litigant (which I didn't know was possible) by paying a fine (literally, writing a cheque in court), and walking out the door a free man.

I'd say giving people the ability to settle criminal charges as a civil matter is a much larger recipe for abuse, leading to Prosecutors not caring about the damage they do, even if their feet are held to the fire.

Fun food for thought: NCSA Mosaic started in 1992, and ended in 1997. Netscape 4.0, the last user of this engine, stopped development in 1998. Gecko, the core of Mozilla, started in 1998, and is still in development 16 years later.

So, the engine that Spolsky was saying was a mistake has now been in use for twice as long as the engine it was replacing.

The Seamonkey Project [1] is the current state of the Mozilla Application Suite[2], which Netscape 6 and 7 were branched from[3][4]. Written in C++ mostly.

Some of us have been using Gecko as their renderer for almost sixteen years now. Seems KHTML(w), the base of both Webkit and Blink[5], is the same age. Seems we've gotten a good run out of the existing codebases. In fact, this means that Gecko (and khtml) have been in use twice as long as NCSA Mosaic, which the first Netscape was based on[6]. Imagine how Spolsky must feel about the Servo rewrite.

Just goes to show you, if a cop finds a reason to arrest you, you an be detained for up to 72 hours without charges being laid upon you.

This story is what a typical arrest feels like in 2014. All the stuff you see on movies? forget it. it doesn't apply anymore.

hnisnotreddit··on Sta.li: Static Linux
I, for one, miss spending 10 hours fully compiling GNOME 0.99.8 and Englightenment 0.15 from CVS every week on my Pentium 133 running Linux Mandrake.

Over the past 17 or so years I've been using linux full-time, I've experienced 3 or 4 of the "sweet spots", or times where using linux was superior to everything else on the market. GNOME 1.x with Enlightenment 0.15 (vs Win98) was the second one (the first, I'm told, was E DR0.13 with CmdrTaco's task managing app and Hand of God theme vs Win95). I believe we are currently at the end of another sweet spot with KDE 4.x being put out to pasture, as it completely destroys the UX of Windows 7/8 and Mountain Lion.

But don't knock the state of linux circa 1999. Sure, you had to ensure your sound cards had OSS drivers, and Winmodems sucked, but it was a superior experience to Win9x even back then.

KDE 1.0 did have Konqueror/KTHML built-in, so maybe this was the example the grandparent was looking for.

>> Did you even use Netscape in the 90's? While most of the non tech loved it's bloated and "friendly" interface, the tech crowd I ran in used IE because it was lean, fast and didn't try to be some sort of "suite" that took over your PC.

Apparently, You never participated in the IE4/Nashville beta. Shortly before Windows 98 took the world by storm, Microsoft unleashed a new Beta of Internet Explorer for all the people who drank the kool-aid of Dynamic HTML that was being marketed at the time. One of the "features" of the Nashville beta was the HTML-ifying of the desktop and file manager. Now, everyone that's used Windows since knows that you can right-click on the desktop, and hide desktop icons. This was considered a feature in the Nashville beta, because it gave more screen real estate to .htm files you could create for every folder, including Desktop. Before uninstalling the (crashy) beta, I spent a good 2 days with all sorts of spinning .GIF files on my desktop thinking I was the coolest person ever. Eventually, I realized my PC was performing at approximately half it's normal speed, exhibiting symtoms such as Explorer taking 45 seconds (I benchmarked) to render C:\WINDOWS\system32 with HTML, and did a full Win95 reinstall in order to remove the tendrils Nashville inserted.

I'd say IE4 was when it "started sucking", myself.

This right here is why Steve Ballmer left a family vacation to attempt to interrupt the Munich linux switch [1]. Free Software is steadily destroying every market Microsoft attempts to dominate (including home entertainment [2]).

It's as if Microsoft's worst fears from the Halloween Documents are coming true. Will Azure be able to make up for all the lost revenue of the Windows/Office/Home Entertainment divisions?
