hndl··on Google's phone number handling library
Exactly. It comes in super handy when you have a free(ish) form text field where the users enter their number which you want to later use (say for 2FA).
hndl··on For Workers, Less Flexible Companies
I'm going to begin working remotely soon (I joined early and have worked with the CEO and other core folks before, so it wasn't that hard). Do HNers have any advice (financial, work-life balance etc)? I'm going to be earning in the US while I live in Antwerp, Belgium.
hndl··on Clear Sans
Can you elaborate what you mean by "load and reference each weight in your stylesheet" for us who aren't CSS savvy?
hndl··on Getting a SIM card in India
This used to be the case in India too. Criminals used prepaid SIM cards for their communication and if memory serves me right it was also used to orchestrate a terrorist act.
hndl··on Developer and Power Users Tool List for Windows
Does anyone know of (or have) a similar list for OSX?
hndl··on Explain Shell
Very cool! It would be great if you would provide common usages for a given command if the user didn't provide any switches. That could be links like the ones you have in the "examples" section on the landing page.
hndl··on Twilio is erroneously over-billing and suspending accounts
Hit -- but we only see an overcharge (3x). Service seems to be back up. Do you have a support number our ops team can contact (they're paranoid).
hndl··on Send payouts with Stripe
How does Stripe verify the business (which service do you leverage), besides matching against the OFAC blacklist?
hndl··on Sleep: Everything You Need to Know
I thought I could wake up before my alarm went off too, but after a little retrospection I considered that perhaps I "trained" myself to get up at the time. That is, I used to use the alarm, then stopped using it, but continued to get up at the same time.
hndl··on Memorial hackathons for Aaron Swartz
Details about the Boston hackathon mentioned in the thread (supposedly around 01/26), please.

Update: details from hackerspace: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Ai2JAMm86EJbdFg...

hndl··on Ask HN: Who Is Hiring? (November 2012)
MineralTree, Cambridge MA

A bit about us:

"MineralTree, a provider of a cloud-based secure, integrated payables and cash management solution for small and medium size businesses seeks Developers with solid experience in Java/J2EE software development to work with our talented technical team to design, develop, and enhance our revolutionary product suite."

We have a proven entrepreneur (this will be his third startup). Plenty of work to be done. We're small, we're fast and we're fun.

Email me at: anuj dot bhatt at geeeemail (you know what this is) dot com and we can take it from there.

hndl··on Google Drive SDK
(Slightly off-topic) What I feel gives Google Drive a leverage over Dropbox is the fact that it works within email. There isn't another place I need to go to share something. I just go to the place I am at and share. The people who I want to share with are already there. This works for well for both, Google's general audience as well as those SMBs that use Google mail for their work mail (read: with a domain, so it even layers a "group thing" there).
hndl··on Light Table reaches 0.1.0
Anyone using this for "real world" development? How does this compare with something you were previously using?
hndl··on The "Just look at it" hack for problem solving
Funny. I thought the same.
hndl··on Ask HN: How important is it to be social prior to launching a company?
Can you elaborate more on why it is important from an incubator standpoint? I would imagine folks from incubators meet a ton of folks and even otherwise would be willing to meet with someone who has a well defined/concrete idea.
hndl··on Why a mathematician can be an excellent software engineer
Genuine interest and patience. You'll need that to be good at anything. Trite, but so rarely exhibited by the folks in the fast lane.
hndl··on Poll: Do you test your code?
Another interesting question: how often do your tests run? Most folks probably run unit tests with continuous integration but what about functional and performance driven tests?
hndl··on Matt Cutts: One of the more fun gadgets I've been playing with lately…
inPulse should consider teaming up with ifttt. Now that'll be amazing!
hndl··on Dropbox rival Space Monkey puts 'cloud' in your house
How did you arrive at $125/user? A link for the unaware?
hndl··on Dropbox rival Space Monkey puts 'cloud' in your house
I think this is a great idea but I think Dropbox has a pretty well established brand name. My guess is that most people aren't going to find the need to switch. The ones who might make the switch are the paranoid folks who would think this is some sort of more secure way to sync.

The idea is nice but the challenge, IMO, will be in marketing this.

hndl··on Linus Torvalds on C++
I think we're missing the point here. Taking the side of the customer of git, I'm happy. I type things on a CLI with git and things happen pretty fast. I'm happy. I don't care whether you wrote it with C, C++ or Haskell. It works. It works just fine. To Linus's point, I've never used, or even heard of someone using Monotone. That must say _something_.
hndl··on Coderwall (YC W12) Wants to be the Reputation System for Developers
The more I come across sites like these, the more I'm convinced the resume isn't going away. A resume with a link to my Github should cut it for most people looking to recruit. Follow up with a phone call and decide whether I'm able to communicate half decently and that should get the ball rolling.
hndl··on I’m writing a book about Gumroad.
I agree that the title could use some love. Here's my contribution: The Gumroad to building a successful company. You can thank me later, Sahil ;).
hndl··on Hacking the Used Car Purchase
I bought a 2007 Honda Civic that had done 24K miles when I bought it (2009). I put down ~$10K for it. I did almost everything they mention here.
hndl··on OwnCloud: An open-source cloud to call your own
This will be pretty neat for the paranoid enterprises that don't want data going out.
hndl··on Leverage
I agree.
hndl··on Bug Prediction at Google
What about files with limited or no history. Cycolmatic Complexity [1] to the rescue?

hndl··on Startup escape path
I would've liked it if the author factored into account how you would sustain yourself financially after you take the leap or if it is assumed that you save before making that escape.
hndl··on At the End of a Procrastinated Day
Procrastination shouldn't just suck, it should be unacceptable. Don't tolerate it. No excuses. Not even if it's "just today".

Close everything! Ask yourself why you're not enjoying your work today. If you're not enjoying what you're doing, do something about it. Either finish it, so you can move on to something you enjoy. If that's not the case, talk to someone about how boring your stuff is and fix this problem.

DON'T ACCEPT PROCRASTINATION!

hndl··on Notes on Programming in C - Rob Pike, February 21, 1989
You're likely to cause a lot of trouble for other (possibly new) engineers going through your code. It seems cumbersome to look up metadata side-by-side while going through code.

I, personally, always reread my code in the form of sentences. Something along the lines of: "okay, first I create a x. Then I pass y to it. I then set this flag..."

If at any point I hesitate or have trouble stating what a line of code does, I add these sentences as comments so someone else can understand easily/quickly (if I can't alter the code for some reason, that is).
