hn_go_brrrrr··on Stripe laying off around 14% of workforce
That's wonderful they emphasize that so strongly. I hope the rest of the culture is as healthy. If so, it sounds like a lovely place to work.
hn_go_brrrrr··on Privately-Owned Rail Cars
Sounds exactly like a yacht.
hn_go_brrrrr··on Strong behavioral individuality is present at the first day after birth in fish
It's hard for people to understand because it's not all-or-nothing. There are plenty of "bred to be violent" dogs that will go their entire lives without doing so. People see that as proof that there's no increased risk, but that's not how statistics works.
hn_go_brrrrr··on Alphabet Earnings Report Q3 2022 [pdf]
It's got some decent usage internally, but it's small potatoes next to Borg.

Keep is dead?
hn_go_brrrrr··on Car feature subscriptions should be illegal, New Jersey Legislators say
It's not a new car when it's brought through customs, so you save a bunch on duties.
hn_go_brrrrr··on Ask HN: Was anyone working at Apple during Steve Jobs' return in 1997?
I work at a BigCorp. A sister team develops client software for Windows. Can you guess what kind of laptops the engineers have?
hn_go_brrrrr··on Hyrum's Law
Titus is the head of the C++ org. He's pretty chill, not at all pompous like you seem to be implying.
hn_go_brrrrr··on Hyrum's Law
There are different degrees of "pay attention". You should consider how Hyrum's Law affects your development; that is, feel free to change that hash function but be aware it's going to break someone.

What I think you mean is: don't live in fear of Hyrum's Law.

hn_go_brrrrr··on New Jersey legislators aim to ban most in-car subscriptions
It absolutely applies to physical things. If I buy a widget you sell, I can do anything I want with it, including resell it.
hn_go_brrrrr··on Google is forcing us to make our open source VoIP app worse
There is such a reasonable middle ground, but Android is falling down that slope at an alarming rate.
hn_go_brrrrr··on Eight RTX 4090s Can Break Passwords in Under an Hour
50^24 is roughly 59.6 duodecillion, if you were curious.
hn_go_brrrrr··on Germany extends lifetime of all 3 remaining nuclear plants
"What lessons did we learn?" is an excellent question, but it's the reaction of a seasoned professional. The reason we have to teach that outlook to new grads is people don't think that way by default. It's unrealistic to expect that reaction from the general populace.
hn_go_brrrrr··on Intel plans thousands of job cuts in face of PC slowdown
The cloud providers have been buying Intel for years and can't afford to just throw thos chips away. AMD is capturing a much larger proportion of data center CPU sales, but you should still expect to see them buying Intel as well, since AMD can't produce enough chips to satisfy all demand. Also, qualifying new platforms is very expensive so cloud providers will continue to buy already-qualified platforms for as long as the perf/W makes sense.
hn_go_brrrrr··on U.S. residents fight for the right to hang laundry (2009)
Adding water to the air is literally adding latent heat. That's what the term means. Point taken about how that decreases sensible heat, though, thanks.
hn_go_brrrrr··on U.S. residents fight for the right to hang laundry (2009)
Thanks, that makes sense. I should have realized this given removing latent heat adds sensible heat.
hn_go_brrrrr··on Signal is secure, as proven by hackers
They took them from someone's phone.
hn_go_brrrrr··on U.S. residents fight for the right to hang laundry (2009)
> Yes, the evaporating cools down the room, though I can't say I ever noticed it.

How does adding latent heat reduce the sensible heat? Are the clothes washed in very cold water?

hn_go_brrrrr··on Feel the power of the Manifest v3
The alternative was to keep going with the previous version of the app, which even supported installing extensions directly from an xpi. It's nice that they support an adblocker or two, but I need much more out of my browser than that.

"Technical reasons" doesn't really cut it. There are frequently technical reasons involved in making a bad decision. That's not a justification.

hn_go_brrrrr··on Feel the power of the Manifest v3
Sure, let's talk about FF Android removing extension support and only adding it back in a very limited way.
hn_go_brrrrr··on Nier Automata for Switch is a miracle port
I really enjoyed Nier Automata -- I'd say it's a solid second place -- but it doesn't hold a candle to Horizon: Zero Dawn. The storytelling was superb, and the gameplay was really good too.
hn_go_brrrrr··on Meta announces hiring freeze, warns employees of restructuring
What's the difference between stability and growth? If the economy isn't growing, people consider it "stagnant". Shrinking is "a recession".
hn_go_brrrrr··on UK pensions hit with margin calls as gilts and sterling slide
Got a link to the FT article? I'd enjoy reading those comments.
hn_go_brrrrr··on Australia gov wants telco Optus to pay for new passports for data breach victims
> There's no such thing as non-production/production systems

Strongly disagree. If it's an isolated copy of your production system with fake credentials, fake data, etc, there's no associated risk. We explicitly turn off various security checks in our nonprod environment because it makes it easier to poke around and debug issues. That would never fly in prod, for obvious reasons.

hn_go_brrrrr··on Cloudflare Calls
AWS is going for "the internet's backend". I don't see how that's any different. A SPOF is still a problem, no matter where in your stack it lives.
hn_go_brrrrr··on Stop overcomplicating it: A simple guidebook to upping your management game
Yeah, tech lead.
hn_go_brrrrr··on Stop overcomplicating it: A simple guidebook to upping your management game
Exactly this. I'm TL for a large team. I get to set strategic and technical direction for our entire org and manage no one. It's fantastic. If I had more time to write code, it would be my dream job.
hn_go_brrrrr··on GPU mining no longer profitable after Ethereum merge
I saw the 5700/6700 claim at the time, but I was never able to find someone willing to buy my 5700 for what a good 6700 was selling for.
hn_go_brrrrr··on Shortest URLs on the Internet
I mean, have fun? You're gonna get most stuff like go/thor-design or go/zanzibar. It's not as if go links are go/our-disney+-competitor.
hn_go_brrrrr··on Google's 'Rest and Vest' Days for Senior Employees Are Over, Says CEO
There are. Some are very collegial, others are...not quite Amazon, but they lean in that direction. Never work in Payments.
