hn23··on Can too many brainy people be a dangerous thing?
For sure they can. Someone with an appeal to power will take advantage of these people and tell everyone how smart the decisions are (s)he is making and that everybody else should shut up.

We are witnessing just that.

hn23··on SARS-CoV-2 detected in Barcelona sewage water sample from March 2019
You can call it, "economy of attention". Same could be said about the Paris case.
hn23··on After 10 years in tech isolation, I’m now outsider to things I once had mastered
It is as if someone makes runs a company at a profit...
hn23··on Britain has gone two months without burning coal to generate power
The reason wood is considered neutral is, that most of the wood is used for construction and other stuff. If you burn it and happen to burn fossil fuel as well, nothing is neutral.
hn23··on Germany's Covid contact tracing app is Open Source
It is because tech people think of tech solutions. Just as this whole pandemic was handled in the countries by virologists - who think in terms of viruses.

Reading about the app I remembered the book of Hans Rosling ("Factfulness") where he describes a situation in Africa during an Ebola outbreak. He wrote: There where people with apps everywhere. The apps were the hammers looking for nails. However, it just consumed resources and shadowed the fact that numbers reported were just messy and the epidemic was over 14 days ago. In the end they had to do data cleaning and they managed _Ebola_ without an app.

I think this app will make people become accustomed to getting traced for $reason.

hn23··on From Spain to Germany, farmers warn of fresh food shortages
BTW: You can use something like a small washing towel (I do not know what the proper english word is - in German it is Waschlappen). So you do not have to touch your shit:)
hn23··on From Spain to Germany, farmers warn of fresh food shortages
Well take a guess why the left hand in some regions of the world is considered dirty even there is water around to wash? Because toilet paper is seen as improper cleaning.
hn23··on Log-log plot of new vs. total Covid-19 cases by country
But are all these graphs comparable? Testing and reporting is not comparable in these countries.
hn23··on From Spain to Germany, farmers warn of fresh food shortages
You do not need much. A pot and a shovel will do for the starter.

Try potatoes or carrots. Potatoes sprout anyway if you do not put them cold and dark so there is not so much to do.

If you buy "earth" make sure it is clean (i.e. sieve it or search with hands)! Here it often contains stuff like cockchafer grubs.

We us some old cheap wax cloth like this: https://www.amazon.de/dp/B079SHYV6S/ref=psdc_12964001_t1_B07... So we do not have the dirt on the floor when planting.

BTW: Carrots can be stored for very long. Here is a video how carrots are stored usually in winter time at industry scale. But you can do this at home as well:

hn23··on From Spain to Germany, farmers warn of fresh food shortages
I really do not understand this toilet paper thing. I mean as long as there is water, why people do not wash their asses. It is cleaner anyway...

When I was young and we visited grandparents, we used newspaper.

hn23··on Covid-19 Rapid 15 minutes Test Kit
Would a false positive bad in this situation if social distancing is required?

False negative would be more bad or am I missing something?

hn23··on Hospital workers make masks from office supplies
What you say is an argument from ignorance...but anyway: you should not imply intent if incompetence works as well. And the latter is strong in.the current US government;)
hn23··on Hospital workers make masks from office supplies
So this is the main problem if all is driven by optimizing to a single value.
hn23··on We’re not going back to normal
Japan is already in recovery mode...
hn23··on GitHub shuts off access to Aurelia repository, citing trade sanctions
Sanctions are part of a war or often a preparation. You could also call it blackmailing. If people die from not having access to medical goods etc because of sanctions it just cheaper than sending troops.
hn23··on Torture prevalent, effective in popular movies, study finds
Just search for the Movie Overgames on YouTube. It shows how the psychology was used in gameshows of the 50ies to reeducate Germans. TV was thought of as means to heal.

I think series like 24 were no accident. They pushed the limit farther. Today even kid movies like Pets is more than slapstick comedy. Even there you see torture as valid means.

hn23··on Lombok Saved My Ass
So the code is inflated because the machine does the code repetition for you. The structure of your program is not getting better I think. I do not argue against annotations but in this case, if there is such a simple thing as try with resources, just use it. If your code is sprinkled over with annotations like this it is hardly getting more understandable. From my experience, a single annotation comes often in packs.
hn23··on Lombok Saved My Ass
So you introduce a new library that does "magic" instead of using one more line? To me this is the opposite of good code. Let alone that the given example would probably live in some library code anyway.
hn23··on The US nuclear forces’ messaging system finally got rid of its floppy disks
Oh, I hear you: fail early, fail hard, fail often...wait...
hn23··on Porno plays on I-75 billboard in Auburn Hills, police searching for suspects
And again, this board is not capable of reading sarcasm.
hn23··on Porno plays on I-75 billboard in Auburn Hills, police searching for suspects
They should have played videos of soldiers marching or something the like. Then it would be considered less harmful.
hn23··on Germany's Vanishing Monasteries
Ha ha ha. The church would not have lasted that long if...
hn23··on Ask HN: How did you prepare for being a first-time parent?
Do not think you can prepare:)

I have two - 5 and 2. We did these birth preparation courses that are offered here in the hospital. It was good to get a glimpse of what follows. However, it is theory that works until reality hits hard. It helped to feel prepared for the first kid. Would recommend if there is something like this where you live.

My personal experience: The first half year is mostly ground stuff. Eat, shit, sleep, fresh air, contact, ... Make a checklist (in the brain) ... Crying means always one of the ground stuff is missing. Do not buy stuff until you need it. Follow your instincts. Do not hesitate to ask a Doc if you are not sure. No Doc will send you away.

Wish you all the best!

hn23··on U.S. drone strike kills 30 pine nut farm workers in Afghanistan
> If the US imposed sanctions against my country, I'd just shrug.

You obviously do not understand that sanctions are usually a way to prepare for war with weapons. Sanctions bring up the cracks in societies that are otherwise hidden under a thin layer of comfort we call civilized behavior. With sanctions you get a black market and all that is related to it. Sanctions are a trade war at another level.

The Matrix of course!
hn23··on Richard M. Stallman resigns
Thank you for the links.

BTW: I am not sure why this question is down voted. At least here in Europe this was not real news so it was an honest questions. The FSF site did not explain the why.

hn23··on Richard M. Stallman resigns
What did he do? Forgive me, I am not on Twitter et.al.
hn23··on The Cult of Kubernetes
But then the question arises, why would I need kubernetes to run a small blog... why not just run the blog. I mean.
hn23··on Tiler: Build Images with Images
I just thought about building something like this. Will give me some good input. Thank You!
hn23··on An innovative approach to making electricity from the wind
If you say:

> Each siting location by definition is worse than the one before.

How is that not true for nuclear power plants? If we have better tech, we can remove old panels and wind turbines. With nuclear plants the place is lost forever. Let alone that there cannot be a safe place to store the waste.
