Design. UX. Code. Sunnyvale, CA

My skillset lies at the intersection of user experience, visual design, and code for any form of digital media. I began my career writing code, transitioned into design, and adopted user experience soon after. Throughout, I’ve continued to learn and play all three roles in parallel in a symbiotic relationship of creativity, functionality, and execution.

hkuo··on Why Windows 8 Is Fundamentally Flawed as a Response to the iPad
> When done you undock and flip back to the touch UI to take it with you, but you still have access to all your documents.

I view this as an antiquated approach to having access to your documents between your "desktop" and "tablet". As much as I hate the word, the future of sharing and accessing documents between devices is in the "cloud". Music and video are already headed in that direction. Services like Dropbox and Evernote have made huge strides. Web apps are also taking us there. And Google's Chromebook intends for everything to be in the cloud.

For sure, right now, it's not a purely seamless task if I say, create a Powerpoint presentation on my Mac and want to share it with someone on my iPad later at a lunch meeting. But, it's not rocket science either. I just throw it into my Dropbox folder. Then I open it from my Dropbox folder on my iPad. But I see these types of tasks becoming automated in the future until it becomes the norm. I don't think local storage will ever go away completely, but I do think it will be used for niche or archaic reasons.

hkuo··on Ask HN: Does anyone here drive anything exciting?
Don't worry about insurance. Take it to the track and have fun. If anything bad happens, tow the car outside of the track and then claim the damage happened there. That the general course of action.
hkuo··on Ask HN: has anyone used Keynote Kung Fu?
Actually you can specify any pixel width or height. I'm not at my computer so can't give instructions on where to find it, but I know it's a little non-intuitive where it is. Just google it, but just wanted to let you know this is indeed possible.
hkuo··on List of current and upcoming cloud platforms
I think Joyent's Node.js cloud service should probably be added, considering that's where it's being actively developed right now.
hkuo··on Show HN: Auto Swatch - New-car research that doesn't suck
Having worked one of the top auto manufacturer websites from top to bottom, MPG and Seating are the next two things you need to add. Particularly right now, MPG is top of mind as gas prices are skyrocketing. And seating is always important. It helps to know whether you'll be able to fit your entire family.

Next comes trunk space and safety ratings. Can I fit what I need to given my particular lifestyle? Will I have a better chance of survival in a crash?

Awards help as well, such as Motor Trend or J.D. Powers. Those factor well into the decision-making.

Funny enough, random things like number of cup holders is a deciding factor some people. Will there be enough cup holders for everyone's drinks?

Regarding the interface, I think it would be particularly awesome if filtering and display updates worked using this jQuery isotope plugin: http://isotope.metafizzy.co/demos/filtering.html

hkuo··on The Tragic Death of the Flip
I think the main difference is that with Flip Live, you would be able to broadcast a public live feed to a large audience. So basically more like Ustream (one to many) than Skype (one to one). And normally, Ustream users show a live feed from a single fixed webcam, while this would have added an aspect of mobility.
hkuo··on Google demos driverless cars
They already did it a few years ago in a self-driving BMW. Enjoy.

hkuo··on YouTube Says It's in Negotiations to Stream Live NBA, NHL Games
Tivo will eventually fall to the scrap heap as well. Why Tivo something when I can just click a link to the archive?
hkuo··on Square Drops Per Transaction Fee
My first reaction was "what's 15 cents?" But a quick calculation shows how it can really add up for a small business operator. Example, 50 transactions per day, that's $7.50 saved per day. Just weekdays alone, that adds up to $150 per month. Nothing huge, but every bit helps.
hkuo··on Quora To Oddly-Named Users: Papers Please
This works for people with credit cards, but there would need to be another layer for people without credit cards.
hkuo··on Quora To Oddly-Named Users: Papers Please
One need only look at the quality of comments on a site like Hacker News to see that "real names" is not a requirement for quality and valuable discussion.

No doubt, real names would be an effective aspect to quality content, but if the system of verification is flawed, it's meaningless.

hkuo··on Email Use Drops by 59% Amongst US Teens in One Year
A drop in email use is no biggie. If it's just about communication, people will IM, facebook message, tweet, SMS, whatever. No biggie. But email isn't just about communication; it's also about identity. And as far as that aspect, email will never go away. At least, I believe, not in my lifetime.

To put it simply, as long as you need an email address to sign up for Facebook, email will not go away.

hkuo··on Sparrow, new Mac mail client out of beta and #1 on Mac App Store
So I don't have to reply individually to all replies, I'm convinced to give Sparrow a go. I've never felt at a loss in Apple Mail, but I'm always willing to give a new product the chance to win me over.
hkuo··on Sparrow, new Mac mail client out of beta and #1 on Mac App Store
Why no love for Apple Mail? The only thing Apple Mail needed was the ability to have the preview pane on the right, which was made possible by this developer who created WideMail: http://widemailplugin.com/. No affiliation, and his site design is terrible, but the plugin works to a tee. I would share a screenshot, but it's a bit too much work to blur out and black out any sensitive information, which would pretty much result in the entire image being blurred out. But here's a basic screenshot I grabbed from the web: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1517499/widemail-thumb.jpg
hkuo··on GoDaddy isn't as pretty as you thought
Godaddy hosts websites? I kid, but it's so clearly not their core business. Their advertisements have one single message: register your domain at GoDaddy. And they do that great. Now that you have your domain name, go find a business whose core business is hosting! Wow.
hkuo··on Sometimes it pays to pay your web designer
The worst part is that the internet hive-mind may take hold and turn this chiropractor's life into hell for a little while. We're only getting one side of the story, and we can't be so quick to take sides without knowing a larger story. For all we know, the designer was lazy, late, charged unfair overtime, anything. But we can't jump to that conclusion either.
hkuo··on Learning from Kenneth Cole's Social Media Mistake
Speaking just from a personal perspective, while the news may be forgotten in a few days, the next time I go to Macy's to buy clothes, seeing the Kenneth Cole section will probably bring back memory of this tweet, and it may very well affect my purchasing decision. I believe in the idea of shopping consciously, rewarding companies that do good over companies with bad behavior. It's very gray and personal what is good and what is bad of course, but this tweet annoys me enough that I might avoid purchasing one of their items.
hkuo··on Redesigning the MailChimp App
Link to their css file: http://us2.admin.mailchimp.com/release/5.5.1/css/screen.css

Minified. About 215k. Taking a glance, it looks about as clean as it can get, and any more optimization would probably make it much less flexible.

It does appear to have an exorbitant usage of !important, but I won't judge since I don't know any of the ins and outs of what their team has to deal with.

hkuo··on Android Market Web Store just Launched
Just happened to go to the Chrome Web Store, and suddenly thought, why didn't they just imitate this layout? Of course they had different teams, but their own Chrome Web Store's layout beats this Android one by a mile.

Link for comparison: https://chrome.google.com/webstore

Just a thought.

hkuo··on Android Market Web Store just Launched
Very clean and simple overall. The green and white make it feel a bit XBox to me, but that's neither here nor there.

The details page probably needs some tweaking. The Related column takes up way too much space and shouldn't be on the left side commanding so much immediate attention. That should come visually last in the flow of what the user is looking for on this page. The main column with details, images and reviews thus feels awkwardly scrunched, particularly with the thin About This App column seeming haphazardly floated right. The worst is the lightbox function when enlarging an image, which forces me to click the small X button to close the lightbox, rather than being able to click in any dead space.

But overall, I think it's fantastic this is finally available and a great first iteration.

hkuo··on Flickr Accidentally Deletes a User's 4,000 Photos and Can't Get Them Back
I would imagine it's not so much about the loss of the photos as much as the loss of the social aspects of those 5 years, the comments made, the photos favorited, collections followed. Moreover, there's the uploading which would be a monumental effort to redo, including titles and captions.
hkuo··on Redesign of MailChimp
I'm not sure what the connection is between white-labeling a product and rebranding oneself, if white-labeling is essentially stripping the product of the brand to be replaced by the brand of the customer.

Unless it's simply to appeal more to a new set of customers, particularly ad or PR agencies, which is a totally legitimate reason for this rebrand. But even in that light, I prefer the previous site, which instills a no-nonsense level of trust.

But this is just my opinion on the brand aspect of the redesign. I think everything else they've changed and added with the site are excellent, particularly the resource section which feels like a library of manuals. The customer stories in video format is a great idea too, though I was confused by the actual videos, which simply did not get to the point of how they related to Mailchimp, at least not as long as I watched before getting bored and stopping the video.

hkuo··on Redesign of MailChimp
Screenshot of previous design for comparison: http://i.imgur.com/aeKr8.jpg

I agree with the general sentiment here. I'm baffled and confused why they made this change. The reason I happened to have a screenshot is because I keep a folder of images of sites I think work exceptionally well. They lost both their usability as well as their humanity. That's a double whammy. I'd love to see a post from them explaining the redesign and any results that may come from this.

hkuo··on Why I Am Switching to Interleaved Email Replies and Why You Should Too
Interweaving works great as long as a note is included at the top to look below for the replies or comments.
hkuo··on My winter break project — Silk
Thanks for this link! I hadn't heard of them before. I just showed my wife and we're going to test out a few prints.
hkuo··on Uniformity vs. Individuality in Mac UI Design
I don't think people should look at this as an all-or-nothing debate. I think there is an importance to following an HIG as a basic guideline and stray from it as it seems appropriate or for the sake of creativity. It's when it strays too far from it when things can become problematic.

Just like with traffic laws, not coming to a full stop at a stop sign is not equal to speeding down a highway going in the opposite direction of traffic.

Apple straying and introducing a metallic patten does not equal the extent of an Adobe Air application forcing me to hit an icon button to access preferences rather than through the common menu bar location. One is aesthetic while the other is functional. And basically, one irritates me way more than the other.

hkuo··on Bitly News
Love it. I finally have a one-stop resource for breaking news for popular culture and other things outside of the web/tech/digital news that I spend the vast majority of my time reading.
hkuo··on Did you know: In NYC, yellow cabs are required to take you anywhere in NYC.
All this talk of NY cabbies and not a single mention of Uber App? I can't wait for them to arrive here in the city and disrupt this chaotic system of NY and gypsy cabs.
hkuo··on My Start-Up: 3000 unique users a day, only 3 offers?
Did a quick google search for the term "lists of videos". This link came up second: http://superl8tive.com/

Seems similar to what you're going for, and they appear to have been around for a while.

Checked their compete.com stats to get a rough idea on their traffic, and it doesn't look good. From 1600 uniques about a year ago down to 467 a couple months ago.

And their execution is not that bad.

So given their traffic, similar idea, and length of existence, it doesn't give much confidence that this idea can have a large audience.

Not raining on your parade. Just want to offer this little bit of research and my take on it. I think you may want to push the idea even further given the non-success of this similar execution.

hkuo··on Interactive Javascript Terminal as a personal website
This would be an awesome way to port over Zork or any Infocom game to the internet!
