hkphooey··on OkCupid urges users to abandon Firefox
Also what about Brian Sewell, a well-known British art critic, writer and broadcaster? Can a gay person be a homophobe?

"Why then do they and lesbians demand the right to marry? Indeed, how many of us have made that demand? One in 20? One in 10? Most of us... have not pleaded for gay marriage. But every minority has within it a core of single-issue politicians and protesters who are never satisfied and always ask for more, and homosexuals, both male and female, are no exception.

...

As the procreation of children is hardly the remit of the homosexual and I have never encountered one (other than a priest) who sought a remedy against fornication, and the civil partnership caters for the mutual society and comfort, why one earth have we had all this ballyhoo about gay marriage?

Since the institution of civil partnerships there has been no impediment to their celebration with a party as extravagant as any wedding, but not all homosexuals are so exhibitionist. Most of us are content with what we now have within the law, and are happy to respect the deeply-held belief of sincere, thoughtful and informed Christians for whom marriage is the one sacrament in which we cannot share.

We have wasted our resources on the wrong campaign – the battle still to be won is against prejudice, the most insidious of enemies."

Well said.

This is mostly faux outrage. Brendan is one man, an easy target to scream and shout at.

Notice how nobody is protesting outside mosques and embassies where under Islam, the penalty for simply being gay, let alone getting married, is DEATH.

hkphooey··on OkCupid urges users to abandon Firefox
Wonderful idea!

Somebody should cook up some javascript (yes, grumble grumble) and start a campaign to embed this on every major site.

As clicking YES is too easy for bigots to get around, another version might require signing in to Facebook, Google or Twitter and upon clicking YES, posting a public message that you support marriage equality.

Obviously any website which does not take part in this campaign is not gay friendly and should be immediately boycotted.

hkphooey··on Japan allows people to return to Fukushima
If it's safe for residents to return, perhaps Shinzo Abe would like to move his family there, along with the rest of parliament as a sign of confidence and show of solidarity with ordinary people?

Meanwhile other reports claim that the radioactive "black soil" patches are being found all over the place, many contaminated with plutonium.

http://ajw.asahi.com/article/0311disaster/fukushima/AJ201206...

"The highest level of radioactivity detected--about 5.57 million becquerels per kilogram--came from black soil collected in the Kanaya neighborhood of the Odaka district of southern Minami-Soma. In 36 out of 41 locations in Fukushima Prefecture where black soil was collected, the radioactivity level exceeded 100,000 becquerels per kilogram. If that level was found in incinerator ash, it would have to be handled very carefully and buried in a facility that had a concrete exterior separating it from its surroundings."

hkphooey··on Three Mozilla Board Members Resign over Choice of New CEO
Polyamorous marriage is a good argument that the campaign for marriage equality is a sham.

We should call the campaign for gay marriage exactly what it is, a single-issue campaign for gay marriage, and not a campaign for marriage equality.

It is clearly wrong to talk about civil rights and human rights when the campaign clearly excludes minority groups who don't fit into the two person heterosexual/homosexual category.

hkphooey··on Mozilla employees tell Brendan Eich he needs to “step down”
Yes, and under Islam the punishment for simply being gay is DEATH - stoning, hanging and beheading - so why all the faux outrage at Brendan Eich instead of protesting outside mosques and embassies?!
hkphooey··on Mozilla employees tell Brendan Eich he needs to “step down”
Silly you for thinking there was an agenda.

In the UK, the Labour (political party) Gay Rights Manifesto of 1985 said,

"A socialist society would supersede the family household... Gay people and children should have the right to live together... It follows from what we have already said that we favour the abolition of the age of consent."

hkphooey··on Mozilla employees tell Brendan Eich he needs to “step down”
So it's not about words... or is it?

> "Gay couples have been allowed since 2005 to enter "civil partnerships", conferring the same legal rights as marriage, but campaigners say the distinction gives the impression that society considers gay relationships inferior."

hkphooey··on Mozilla employees tell Brendan Eich he needs to “step down”
These are employees who are dogmatic and who may have mistakenly believed they were working for a political organization rather than a technology company.

If Brendan Eich being CEO means they are not able to perform their duties as stipulated in their employment contract, they should resign.

hkphooey··on Mozilla employees tell Brendan Eich he needs to “step down”
So marriage is a basic human right?

So the right to marry whomever you choose is universal, for everybody, no exceptions?

So why doesn't the campaign for "marriage equality" fight for the right of a brother and sister to get married, or a mother and her son?

hkphooey··on Mozilla employees tell Brendan Eich he needs to “step down”
> There're any number of reasons why someone might visit those countries.

People were calling for a boycott of all things Russian, or did you forget that?

The irony of course being that Russia decriminalized same-sex relationships in 1993 long before the US, effectively, did the same in 2003 even though 14 states still ban sodomy.

hkphooey··on Mozilla employees tell Brendan Eich he needs to “step down”
Or maybe these employees have cynically protected themselves from layoffs... because they could claim the CEO targeted them due to a difference in opinion!
hkphooey··on Mozilla employees tell Brendan Eich he needs to “step down”
Does Eich refuse to work with gay people? Is he suddenly firing people because of their sexual orientation or political beliefs? No. So who is the fascist? Looks like the mob who demand he resign or be fired because they don't like his views.

BTW:

Marriage equality? So why doesn't the campaign include polygamous families? They exist, they have kids, they even have TV shows, and there has been a cultural history of polygamy around the world for thousands of years until modern times.

The campaign for gay marriage is exactly that, gay marriage, but it is not a campaign for civil rights for everyone, because if it were, it would support the right for polygamous marriages to be recognized.

Yes, Mary the office manager, she claims to be a Christian but I've always suspected her of being a witch. Burn her! Drown her! Do both!

But whatever you do, don't go near John, because I hear he gets upset over cartoons and he might react violently rather than meekly accepting punishment like a good Christian.

If you're sick of the political correctness and need a good laugh, watch this short piece by British aethist comedian Pat Condell, 'How gay is Islam?'

hkphooey··on Mozilla employees tell Brendan Eich he needs to “step down”
People are employed on what they contribute to the company, not on their social or political views.

If these employees are such bigots and fascists, that they can't fathom someone having a different opinion to their own, they should resign and work elsewhere.

Mozilla is a technology company with the mission to promote a free and open web. If these employees believed that Mozilla was some kind of political organisation, they are wrong and have been deluding themselves.

hkphooey··on Steve Jobs's response after getting a Google employee fired.
Speaking of conspiracy...

Anybody else looked at AngelList and the salaries being offered?

Isn't it strange that the majority of salaries, cash and equity, top out at the same amount?

Isn't it amazing that in a free market, hundreds of start-up founders value engineers the same?

Smells like something fishy going at the angel funds and VCs to price fix wages of start-up worker bees...

hkphooey··on Steve Jobs's response after getting a Google employee fired.
Exactly, you could call it the trickle-down effect.

If you apply for a job at a start-up they can say "Hey, an engineer at Google makes this much, you're not as good, so you're going to make 25% less, and since this is a start-up we're going to take another 25% off.".

Look at AngelList and the salaries being offered. Isn't is strange that the majority of salaries top out at the same amount, and the amount of equity on offer seems to be the same too.

Smells like something fishy going at the VCs to price fix wages of start-up worker bees...

Here is an example from the UK, August 2013 (not sure what the current status is). I have no dog in this fight but to me this does not seem like tolerance on the part of the gay couple, this action comes across as somewhat spiteful.

"Millionaire gay fathers to sue the Church of England for not allowing them to get married in the church.

The first legal challenge to the Church of England's ban on same-sex marriage was launched today - months before the first gay wedding can take place.

Gay father Barrie Drewitt-Barlow declared: 'I want to go into my church and marry my husband.' He added: 'The only way forward for us now is to make a challenge in the courts against the Church.'

The legal move means an early test for David Cameron's promise to the CofE and Roman Catholic bishops that no church would be forced to conduct same-sex weddings against the will of its leaders and its faithful.

...

'It upsets me because I want it so much - a big lavish ceremony, the whole works.'

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2383686/Millionaire-...

hkphooey··on Gay Firefox developers boycott Mozilla to protest CEO hire
In the UK, civil partnerships were introduced for same-sex couples, which gave AFAIK the exact same legal rights and tax benefits as heterosexual marriage. However, campaigners for gay marriage said this was not good enough so the Prime Minister eventually pushed through a vote for gay marriage. So it seems the issue wasn't really about legal rights, that just comes along for the ride, it was more about using the word "marriage".

Similar thing when it comes to marriage ceremonies. Why lobby the state to try and force a religious institution to hold a same-sex marriage ceremony when the teachings of that religion are clearly against same-sex relationships? Can't we accept that in the diversity of opinions out there, some are like chalk and cheese? They simply don't go together so why force the issue and make everybody unhappy?

What I find interesting about this last point is that campaigners only focus on the Christian religion. It seems nobody wants to try and force mosques and synagogues to perform same-sex marriage ceremonies. Why is that?

hkphooey··on Gay Firefox developers boycott Mozilla to protest CEO hire
This is silly, almost fascist.

What next?

If a person doesn't donate to a campaign supporting gay marriage, does that mean the person is a bigot and homophobic?

hkphooey··on Gay Firefox developers boycott Mozilla to protest CEO hire
I'm sorry, but you made a mistake of projecting your own beliefs and value system onto Mozilla.

Mozilla is simply a technology organization and their mission is to promote a free and open web. It is not human rights, animal rights, or anything else.

If Brendan Eich believes in a free and open web then he is the right person for the job.

hkphooey··on Gay Firefox developers boycott Mozilla to protest CEO hire
I disagree.

People have died for the right to speak their minds so don't live in fear of what may or may not happen.

If you have an opinion, voice it. If somebody is going to discriminate against you because of your opinion, then they are the bigot.

Don't let political correctness silence you.

hkphooey··on Brendan Eich becomes Mozilla CEO
What exactly did you mean by "contingent"? I interpreted what you wrote as meaning that since there aren't a vocal group of polygamous families making themselves seen and heard, it was somehow okay to ignore them because they were so insignificant.

Maybe I misunderstood what you were saying, but I think my point still stands: that the marriage equality campaign is not really about equality for everybody because it does not include minority* groups like polygamists.

*Although in many cultures polygamy was the norm for hundreds and thousands of years and only recently been banned.

hkphooey··on Brendan Eich becomes Mozilla CEO
> I do not see a contingent of people saying "we are living in healthy polygamous de facto marriages and wish to have the state recognize them."

So the minority should not have any civil rights?

In the US there are currently two different TV shows both featuring a man and his five "wives" and all their kids, and they all seem well adjusted and happy. Yet the law does not allow the man to be married to all of them. One of them has been fighting this stuff in court in Utah.

Why do people support gay marriage but not polygamous marriage? Why aren't there activists on street corners handing out leaflets and asking for donations to help minorities in Utah?

There is obviously some kind of double standard going on here and I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that it is simply human nature at work. Gay people who want to get married only care about their own situation and are simply not interested in polygamous marriages.

So it is somewhat hypocritical to expect the majority, who are not gay, to care about gay marriage when the debate is not truly about civil rights, because if it were, the campaign would also be fighting for the rights of polygamous families.

I'd like to see the discussion take place and not be dismissed out-of-hand.

hkphooey··on Brendan Eich becomes Mozilla CEO
Yep, political correctness is stifling open debate.

For some strange reason, nobody wants to discuss polygamous marriages, and whether they should be legal or not. It would be the height of hypocrisy to support gay marriage but not allow multiple consenting adults to form a similar union. Yet to even raise the issue invites ridicule.

Another thing, I've often heard gay people use the derogatory term "breeders" to slur heterosexual couples with children. Why is this ok? Why doesn't anyone stand up and say this is wrong?

hkphooey··on Brendan Eich becomes Mozilla CEO
There's an elephant in the room which people don't like discussing:

If sexual orientation is not a preference, is it genetic and if so, what happens if scientists can screen for it?
