hkolk··on Race-condition-free deployment with the "symlink replacement" trick
I work for a pretty big PHP shop. Our opcode cache has some issues with this, but our stat-cache is ok. Inside the code we unpack the symlink, so internally we are pointing to files like ~/releases/<id>/codebase/HTML/index.php instead of ~/codebase/HTML/index.php

Because of the opcode issues we still do a rolling restart of the apaches but we don't see them a lot.

We use `rename` instead of `mv`. Don't know why :)

edit: this also handles the problem of suddenly referencing different files mid-request. Because you don't

hkolk··on Good riddance, PayPal
Small nit-picky thing: Paypal has bank-status in Europe.
hkolk··on Great work Visa, now I hate you
In a rural town in the UK I tried to get some money of my Mastercard on a Visa-branded machine. Didn't work. A friend tried with a Visa card and that worked like a charm. It sounds more like a common practice in the UK.

Denmark had something similar with Visa as well. Apparently it works since I am now very likely to get a Visa-card next to my Mastercard for those just-in-case situations.

hkolk··on 2 month hackathon on a remote tropical island
I think you mean this one:

I was looking for it as well :)

hkolk··on The (very) uneven distribution of DNS root servers on the Internet
On that map there is one in the middle of Russia, but there are 3 more in Moscow. I assume that is also the main internet hub for Russia.

Root servers are used for a lot of traffic, not just when nothing is cached. For the AsiaPacifc stats on the L server: http://dns.icann.org/cgi-bin/dsc-grapher.pl?plot=bynode&...

hkolk··on The Deadly Linux Commands
The post is wrong. This does nothing since it is a line of C code, so not actually executable.

It comes from this trick-email: http://seclists.org/fulldisclosure/2007/Aug/71

There are some details on these commands (and looks like the source article) here: http://ubuntuforums.org/announcement.php?f=48 (3rd post)

hkolk··on Facebook's S-1 Filing
Probably best to find a local broker that is on nasdaq. In the Netherlands, I would advise Binck or something similar. I personally have my companies stock in eTrade, but that is because that is how I received it :)

It can be tricky to get into the IPO though. Don't know the details on those rules.

hkolk··on Firefox's enterprise support version has now been released
It looks more like this replaces the (now quite outdated) Long Term Support version of 3.6, which even got updated yesterday: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/3.6.26/releasenotes/

Part of this new ESR process is that 3.6 will go EOL in April.

hkolk··on Did Techcrunch get Hacked?
Probably caused by pointing to an old IP in their DNS, which is now reused for a different site. And because that server doesnt know about that domain, it shows the default vserver: http://70.32.92.201/

Still bad though, since they now have access to the cookies/local-storage of techcrunch.com itself.

hkolk··on Clean Your App Permissions in 2 Minutes
"Now click the icons and get ready for a surprise!". I was not surprised. Although one annoying thing is that Facebook auto-auths some websites such as Rotten Tomatoes. (Afaik it has that also for Yelp)
hkolk··on I miss w
I had to inform a professor he was running an open home directory like that. Pretty tricky to do as it implies you were looking for it in the first place.
hkolk··on How To Build A Site That Looks Great On Every Screen
Good in theory, bad in practice. I will fully admit that this is how it should work, but the soapbox site immediately points to the trouble you get from it. From simple things such as an email field that doesn't say it's an email field, and running out of the viewport boundary because it's too long, to issues like the top banner cutting the photo wrong on the Stay Connected page, and having to scroll down deep to get to content. I find this site looks a lot more unusable on a mobile device.

I applaud the Boston Globe for doing this so well, but I have yet to see other good implementations on proper big websites.

hkolk··on Paypal gives FBI the list of IP Address of 1,000 Anomymous hackers
You can't call this action picketing/marching/protesting.. This group has brought down multiple websites, with the malice as the intent. The next best real-world comparison would have been a riot. Attempting to shut down a business is in my eyes not something the police would let slide in real-world situations
hkolk··on Parallel script loading for improved page load
Basically, this is the same trick as google analytics now uses: http://code.google.com/apis/analytics/docs/tracking/asyncTra...

We verified this at our company (we don't like it our site goes down together with google :) ), and it works pretty good. I would advocate headjs to load itself with it though and inline that piece of jscript

hkolk··on Eclipse Indigo is here
I just started my download of OS-X. Either it is an old message, or the packages distributed faster then expected (see the note under that page)
