hiyer··on The Unreasonable Effectiveness of Sequence Diagrams in MermaidJS
Check out seqdiag, part of blockdiag [1]. It's python-based and uses graphviz (AFAIK) to generate sequence diagrams in SVG. I've used it several times and found it very good.

hiyer··on Ask HN: What are some low cost payment processing alternatives to Stripe?
On a related note, you can look at hyperswitch [1], which is an open-source payment orchestrator that supports multiple payment processors. You can self-host it or they have a hosted version as well.

hiyer··on Launch HN: Twenty.com (YC S23) – Open-source CRM
Benioff started his career at Oracle and was a prodigy there - becoming the youngest ever VP or something like that. It's not surprising if his playbook is inspired by Larry's.
hiyer··on Linux Hits All-Time High of 3% of Desktop PC Share After 30 Years
You can continue to use Ubuntu (upgrade to 23.04) unless you have an aversion to snaps, in which case you can go with Linux Mint - https://www.linuxmint.com/rel_victoria_mate_whatsnew.php
hiyer··on The away team model at Amazon (2022)
I don't see how having Away Teams fixes this issue. The Away Team member is still free to write shitty code (or un-write good code, as in this case), and it is still the responsibility of the home team to catch that in code reviews.
hiyer··on Show HN: I built a dashboard tracking the number of Threads users
Very true. I installed the app, signed up, browsed for a few minutes to see what it was like, and then uninstalled it :-).
hiyer··on Defer for Shell (2020)
Zig has it too.
hiyer··on Ask HN: What are some of the most elegant codebases in your favorite language?
Peter Norvig's Advent of Code solutions in Python. e.g., for 2022 - https://colab.research.google.com/github/norvig/pytudes/blob...
hiyer··on Cormac McCarthy has died
It's a great book, but it was depressing enough the first time I read it. I can't imagine reading it several times :(
hiyer··on Distcc: A fast, free distributed C/C++ compiler
We used to use this in a previous company. It reduced the build time from ~20 minutes to ~2 minutes; until a bug in the ld linker at the time (linking is not distributed - only compilation is) pushed it back up to 20 minutes. We had a hell of a time finding the issue, but luckily there was a newer versions of binutils available where it was fixed; and upgrading to it got the build time back under 2 minutes.

Fun times!

hiyer··on Ask HN: What challenges are you facing offshoring development to India?
You can also look at Rippling - though I'm not sure if they sell only the payments part or you have to buy in to the entire employee management suite (which is not bad BTW).

Disclaimer - I used to work there.

hiyer··on AMD has a one-liner to help speed up Linux system resume time
I'm having similar issue with my Ryzen laptop. May I know what you had to change to disable XHCI wakeup?
hiyer··on New study suggests Joro spiders are shy
Thanks. This will likely be my nightmare when I go to sleep tonight.
hiyer··on GitHub switches to Rust based Blackbird code search
No, the company hasn't enabled it yet for us.
hiyer··on GitHub switches to Rust based Blackbird code search
My current employer uses sourcegraph [1], which also uses n-gram based indexing like github's blackbird. Would be interesting to see a comparative benchmark of the two.

hiyer··on Casio adds fitness features to original G-Shock digital watch
> On top of the nasty hit to battery life requiring USB charge for advanced functions

There's a "Tough Solar" G-Shock [1] with fitness features that doesn't need manual charging.

hiyer··on Unix Koans
Loved it. Thanks for finding this and to OP for sending you on its trail :-)
hiyer··on My pay went from $240k to $0
I thought it was some tech dude who got laid off, but this is so much worse.
hiyer··on Leonardo da Vinci Was Jewish
I find the fact that his mother was a sex slave/prostitute more surprising and interesting than the fact that he was Jewish.
hiyer··on Gig Workers Are Being Stabbed, Stoned, and Abused in India
What makes you think he's used it in a derogatory way?
hiyer··on India’s Tigers Bounce Back
> I imagine it's not the ending of the life that's fun, it's the challenge,

While I agree with this, I find it hard to digest that some people find even the challenge "fun" when it necessarily involves ending a life.

hiyer··on Neovim 0.9
PPAs are available for both stable (0.7.x)[1] and unstable (this 0.9)[2] versions. I use the latter and it has worked well for me.

hiyer··on The Nine Billion Names Of God (2021) [video]
I remember reading this in the Reader's Digest anthology Great Short Tales of Mystery and Terror. Other classics in the book were The Rats in the Walls, The Hands of Mr Ottermole, An Invitation to the Hunt, The Damned Thing, and The Wendigo, among many others.
hiyer··on Andreessen Horowitz is now openly courting capital from Saudi Arabia
Thanks for the detailed explanation!
hiyer··on Andreessen Horowitz is now openly courting capital from Saudi Arabia
> Andreessen Horowitz is now openly courting capital from Saudi Arabia, despite U.S. strains.

I didn't know US' relations with Saudi Arabia were strained. SA imports hundreds of millions of dollars in weapons from USA every year.

hiyer··on I have never been treated this bad in an interview process in 20 years
Very true - I've reached the interview stage and been rejected probably a dozen times over my career. The only company which provided detailed feedback on my performance was Facebook. All the others just sent a generic rejection mail.
hiyer··on Google was beloved as an employer for years. Then it laid off thousands by email
12000 employees. A significant percentage of them probably working remotely. How else are you supposed to lay them off if not by email?
hiyer··on PrimateJS: Htmx Quick Start
> you can't seriously tell me that you want to use UIs that require constant network round trips,

Is this not true of react apps too? I don't write much UI code, but the react/vue codebases I've worked on perform REST/GraphQL requests all the time to render new data.

hiyer··on French bulldogs are taking over America
Better them than pitbulls I suppose.
hiyer··on SF payroll firm Rippling has to delay payouts after Silicon Valley Bank collapse
I don't know how I would reword it, but the current headline gave me the impression that Rippling had money deposits stuck in the bank and hence couldn't pay people on time.
