hiyer··on Indian investigators ask Apple to access Delhi chief minister's phones
Where did you get the 2% number from? ED claims a conviction rate of 93% in PMLA cases - https://www.business-standard.com/india-news/over-93-convict....
hiyer··on Average worker now logs off at 4 p.m. on Fridays
True. 15 years ago when I was working at a large digital storage vendor, the joke was that Friday afternoon was for discussing each others' weekend plans; and Monday morning was for discussing the outcomes of those plans.
hiyer··on BYD's new EV, starting under $10K, is stoking fear among rivals
I hope they will launch this in India soon. Seems like a no-brainer for india's price conscious market.
hiyer··on At least 18 killed, 43 wounded after terrorists attack at concert hall in Moscow
> another mobilization against Ukraine

I doubt Ukraine has a significant Muslim population, so it would be hard to mobilize against Ukraine based on an attack by ISIS.

hiyer··on Tooling has improved for ambitious software developers
That's more a commentary on the inefficiency of Teams rather than software in general. Slack and discord both open pretty much instantaneously, and rarely show up in the top 10 resource consumers on my laptop.
hiyer··on S3 is files, but not a filesystem
Exactly.
hiyer··on S3 is files, but not a filesystem
One operation where this difference is significant is renaming a "folder". In UNIX (and even UNIX-y distributed filesystems like HDFS) a rename operation at "folder" level is O(1) as it only involves metadata changes. In S3, renaming a "folder" is O(number of files).
hiyer··on Daft: Distributed DataFrame for Python
There are benchmarks here - https://github.com/Eventual-Inc/Daft?tab=readme-ov-file#benc.... Seems to outperform Dask by a fair bit.
hiyer··on Daft: Distributed DataFrame for Python
Really impressive benchmarks - outperforms even Spark by a good margin. Great work!
hiyer··on [dead]
Article is from 2022. I remember reading this news at the time and having a chuckle or two over it.
hiyer··on Cosmic Desktop: Closing in on a Cosmic Alpha
I wish they were available in India :-(
hiyer··on Tissot's indicatrix
And here I was thinking this was a new watch from Tissot :-)
hiyer··on Sephora hits $10B in sales, gives employees a cookie as a reward
Lots of companies have this scheme, usually called Employee Stock Purchase Plan. 2 of my previous employers had it, and it was quite popular among employees as well.
hiyer··on Sephora hits $10B in sales, gives employees a cookie as a reward
Historically (in tech at least) the stock price goes up when layoffs are announced. So buying your employer's stock may serve as a small insurance against being laid off.
hiyer··on Amazon has taken down the Sad Bastard Cookbook
It's still free on itch.io
hiyer··on Fluorite lenses: Corrective capabilities beyond ordinary optical glass
Curious - is this really expensive to make? Why is chromatic aberration even a thing now if we've had this technology since 1969?
hiyer··on Ask HN: What would you do if you could start over?
Congratulations on building your own company! Out of curiosity, may I know what it is?
hiyer··on Ask HN: What would you do if you could start over?
Start investing in stocks early. The initial years of my career, most of my investment went into real estate, which have provided nowhere near the kind of returns that I've got from stocks in the last decade or so.
hiyer··on Get a Windows 11 development environment
Yes. You also get Vagrant images for them [1] which are quite convenient to use.

hiyer··on Asus Zenbook Duo 2024
I have an Asus from 2017 that still works great. I replaced the ram and ssd with higher capacity ones a couple of years back, but apart from that no repairs in the last 6+ years.
hiyer··on Remote Workers Are Losing Out on Promotions
Did you directly get promoted to CEO ;-) ?
hiyer··on Remote Workers Are Losing Out on Promotions
My thoughts exactly :-). Remote and fewer responsibilities are a win-win situation for some of us.
hiyer··on Ask HN: Programming Courses for Experienced Coders?
Crafting interpreters [1] is one such, where the author walks you through writing an interpreter for a toy language. The book uses Kotlin IIRC, but you can write the interpreter in any language of your choice.

hiyer··on Ask HN: What sub $200 product improved your 2023
What's the advantage of this for hydration when compared to plain water?
hiyer··on StyleX – Meta's styling library
What's the advantage of css in js as opposed to just plain css?
hiyer··on TrasHTTPandas – Trash Panda HTTP Responses
The wepb images are smaller and load pretty fast.
hiyer··on Google confirms they will disable uBlock Origin in Chrome in 2024
I wish FF would implement support for WebAuthN Passkeys so I can use it for work as well :-(
hiyer··on 20% of Millennials and 68% of Gen Z-ers still live with other family members
India is at #9 and it's very common here too. It's become even more so in the tech sector after remote work. Almost all of my single colleagues live with their parents. And even some of the married ones live with parents or in-laws.

I can understand the appeal - no rentals to pay, way lower cost of living if the parents live in a non-metropolitan area, and - if you have kids - you have someone to take care of them during your meetings.

hiyer··on How Apple Made the Space Black MacBook Pro Darker Than
No, thanks. I'll hold out for the Vantablack version.
hiyer··on New job has no way of coding locally?
In my first job, our dev environment was on NFS-mounted servers - and I wouldn't be surprised if that company still follows the same model. In my last one, we started with local environments, but started moving to cloud environments (using something like repl.it) as the UX - especially running tests - was much faster on the remote dev environments.

YMMV of course, but it's horses for courses if you ask me.
