The river has been cleaned in 2000-2003[1], but a wikipedia photo[2] from 2010 shows foam buildup due to pollution.

Article is from 2022. I remember reading this news at the time and having a chuckle or two over it.

Would be good, if this brought incentive to change anything for the better, but it does not seem like it:

"His office has, however, denied the chief minister fell ill and said Mr Mann went to the hospital for a routine checkup."

Now, that could be that the water is, in fact, polluted… or it could be a sign that the divine exists, has a sense of humor, and doesn’t much care for grandstanding politicians.

Given the continued existence of a certain US politician with flesh as orange as that turban, I’m leaning towards the former.
