hiyer··on Companies are lying about AI layoffs?
Are h1b workers really cheaper? Don't you have to pay them similar to what an American at the same level would be paid?
hiyer··on Ultrasonic Chef's Knife
And India. Although here they do a horrible job of it, so I prefer to sharpen them myself.
hiyer··on D2 (text to diagram tool) now supports ASCII renders
Just wanted to thank you for a great tool :-). I love d2 and ever since I discovered it a couple of years back I've been using it for all my diagramming needs.

Thanks again and keep up the good work!

hiyer··on Databricks is raising a Series K Investment at >$100B valuation
Databricks on azure is huge. I've heard that in some Azure regions, over 70% of the compute usage is just Databricks. So there is definitely an incentive for MS to acquire them.
hiyer··on Databricks is raising a Series K Investment at >$100B valuation
For a few TBs of data, well partitioned and stored in parquet or some such format, you could just use duckdb on a single node.
hiyer··on Databricks is raising a Series K Investment at >$100B valuation
I've heard they're regularly doing buybacks for employees.
hiyer··on Why there are so many more South Asian CEOs than East Asian CEOs in the US
Even within "South Asia", India is over-represented. Haven't heard of too many Pakistani, Bangladeshi, or Sri Lankan CEOs.
hiyer··on Show HN: A Raycast-compatible launcher for Linux
This is amazing! I was working on something like this myself, but I've not reached anywhere near this level of functionality or polish. Looks like I'll drop it and see if I can contribute to this instead.
hiyer··on Couple has eaten at the same restaurant six nights a week for 15 years (2019)
> Maybe they have s nacks at home?

Very likely. They definitely don't look like they've been calorie-deprived for 15 years.

hiyer··on Claude Code does our releases now
This is cool and all, but I don't see why this can't be accomplished (and more deterministically) with a bunch of bash/python scripts. I've seen that done and work well in several firms for decades.
hiyer··on Backblaze: Mounting Losses, Lawsuits, Sham Accounting, Insider Selling
Beachbody isn't an MLM. They sell workout programs (used to be dvds but have now moved to a subscription model). From personal experience, I can say that at least one of their programs - Tony Horton's P90X - is very good.
hiyer··on Local CI. Sign off on your own work
If this is just running tests locally, it seems deeply flawed - e.g. the tests would work even if I forgot to commit new files.

OTOH if starting a new container, pulling my branch and then doing everything, it's definitely as good as running on remote CI because it's basically replicating the same behaviour. And it would likely still be much faster since:

* CI machines are underpowered compared to dev laptops/desktops. e.g. our CI builds run on a container with 4 vCPUs and 16GB RAM. In contrast my laptop has 16 cores and 48 GB RAM

* docker pull itself takes a relatively long time on CI. If I'm running it locally it would just use the cached layers

hiyer··on Vacheron Constantin breaks the world record for most complicated wristwatch
Amazing workmanship. And they managed to make the watch look beautiful as well.
hiyer··on EU confirms Apple can make a portless iPhone without USB-C
I'm ok with removing the charging port, but please bring back the headphone port. I'm tired of using bluetooth earphones that lose their charge exactly when you need them not to.
hiyer··on Mark Zuckerberg messages Facebook engineer
So who was the engineer?
hiyer··on Goose: An open-source, extensible AI agent that goes beyond code suggestions
You can use it with ollama too
hiyer··on I miss Vim
I echo the author's feelings, though not for the same reasons. The main reason I want to be comfortable if not proficient in vim - and why I use it as my goto editor - is so that I know my way around when I have to login to remote servers. But with my neovim setup now relying on Telescope, Ack, and various other plugins, it takes me a minute to get my bearings when I have to work without them on remote servers.
hiyer··on Florida man eats diet of butter, cheese, beef; cholesterol oozes from his body
Reminded me of this Junji Ito story - https://junjiitomanga.fandom.com/wiki/Glyceride
hiyer··on Staffers unload on Amazon 'leadership' after return-to-office for desk shortage
IIRC the Bangalore office only had cameras at the entries and exits, not over employees' desks. Might be some privacy thing.
hiyer··on Staffers unload on Amazon 'leadership' after return-to-office for desk shortage
In Amazon's Bangalore office, getting rooms for meetings was hard even before Covid. When we managed to get rooms, a couple of minutes extension wouldn't be possible because someone would be breathing down our necks for their upcoming meeting.
hiyer··on I have made the decision to disband Hindenburg Research
I wouldn't say they were ahead at least in terms of reputation. They targeted India's Adani group and failed. The Supermicro "revelation" was also a damp squib. I suppose they made plenty of money with their short-selling though, so in that sense they are, perhaps, ahead enough.
hiyer··on Best Pens for 2025
I have one each of the three "best" beginner fountain pens and, among them, I found the Platinum Preppy to be the easiest and smoothest to write with.
hiyer··on Euthanasia Coaster (2010)
I remember seeing a small model of this in the Singapore Museum of Art. Looked scary as heck, though still fascinating in a morbid kind of way.
hiyer··on Ask HN: What Is the Meaning Behind Anime Girls Holding Programming Books
Are these any good? Say, if I want to refresh my knowledge of calculus...
hiyer··on The slow death of the hands-on engineering manager
I've seen organizations go in the opposite direction now with the hands-off individual contributor. Their only job seems to be to attend meetings and pass on the minutes to others.
hiyer··on Show HN: AirFry.Pro – The best popular and healthy recipes for your air fryer
This is nice, but can you add filters for vegetarian/vegan food please?
hiyer··on Python with Rizz
Never heard of brainrot before but this is funny as heck. I lol'ed at this one especially

    try/except/finally hawk/tuah/spit on that thang
hiyer··on Ask HN: What were the best books you read this year?
Cemetery of Forgotten Books series by Carlos Ruiz Zafon. The stories are very dark and affecting. His descriptions are evocative, and the writing is absolutely beautiful even in translation.
hiyer··on 500 Million, But Not a Single One More
They did mass vaccination too, at least here in India. They stopped before I was born, but my elder brother got the vaccine long after we'd had the last case of Smallpox in India.
hiyer··on Netflix buffering issues: Boxing fans complain about Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson
On a tangential note, the match totally looked fixed to me - Tyson was barely throwing any punches. I understand age is not on his side, but he looked plenty spry when he was ducking, weaving and dodging. It seemed to me he could have done better in terms of attacking as well.
