Code and concepts fiddler. Occasionally completes something cool.

More ideas than time to pursue them.

Often Feels smart and dumb simultaneously.

And before him, Altman was explaining very calmly that no company could ever compete with OpenAI.
hirako2000··on AI needs $6T in annual revenue to justify data centre boom
It's less* than that, and if AI replaces workers at that scale it will create such a problem* the system would fall before these companies manage to demonstrate they escaped bankruptcy.

hirako2000··on AI needs $6T in annual revenue to justify data centre boom
And that's why those CEO keeps promoting the threat AI may displace many white collar jobs, not just developers.

They already figured they would need trillions revenue. So they paint an economic where such amount is plausible.

hirako2000··on I don't want the details
The meeting was about the SVP teaching the team that incidents happen, what's important is to prevent the same issue from occuring again.

The fact the author had never been in a call with the SVP implies incidents that happened before were explained in details, without much process change.

It's a team of 3. It's not like they have a security team, dedicated testers. They were for very long releasing beta software. That in fact already worked.

That isn't my read.

ApplecCare is as much a warranty as their Apple's phone are guaranteed waterproof.

It's marketing.

The 3 year warranty add-ons is an insurance. One can get an insurance for any device.

An old Samsung S10 takes stunning pictures. Mid range phones at 300 USD are incredibly good at taking shots.

But our appreciation keep getting skewed because flagship phones make leaps forward.

No they don't. Even waterproof phones damage due to simple water spill get denied warranty (even from Apple).

No wonder we are hammered with ai announcements.

Oddly most of these challenges seem to seek to solve problems that would enable phenomenal business opportunities, that many biologists would find questionable.

I've interviewed for several senior jobs lately. And found that the more pragmatic and honest I was, the quicker I was dropped from the pipeline.

It goes both ways, and I would argue the spiral happens because the other side expects something above an beyond the possible.

The doom demo would have to be reproduced to confirm what their model is capable of. Oh but it's all closed source, so who knows.

It reminds. Me of Devin. Took a while to debunk. Not saying Jev is a fraud , but the gap between structuring typed output and playing a game involving logical interpretation of frames made of pixels, screams unstructured interpretation they made and forgot to mention.

hirako2000··on Show HN: Cactus Needle 3: 8-29MB automation models can match DeepSeek V4 Flash
My thought, the growing number of dubious claims that a tiny model beats LLMs will make any useful innovation be overlooked.

What's more important than the resource requirements is to highlight what the model simply cannot even attempt to do that general LLMs do decently well.

In other words, tell me the anti use case clearly so that I don't have to find out myself.

hirako2000··on Fed hikes rates as inflation worries push up bond yields
So far you are right, yields are falling since yesterday.
hirako2000··on Fed hikes rates as inflation worries push up bond yields
what I'm saying is that Fed hikes interest rates → bonds sell off → yields rise → mortgage rates rise.

This is logical and empirically observed.

But you are right on the longer term effect. Zooming out: Fed hikes → inflation cools → inflation expectations fall → yields fall → mortgage rates fall.

But the latter is not guaranteed, and it takes time.

I'm unsure to understand how the ceiling and floor mechanisms work. But will dig into that. Thanks.

hirako2000··on Fed hikes rates as inflation worries push up bond yields
But bond yields are based on a market.

If interest rates go up, bonds get sold (for better yield bearing products), pushing the yields of those bonds higher. And it finds some equilibrium. The fact it isn't immediate has to do with short term vs long term bonds. When they mature and the pace of arbitrage.

I don't see how a rate hike is meant to lower mortgage rate. And just looking at the figures shows it's the opposite effect.

Logically, if borrowing money becomes more expensive, how could borrowing specifically for the purpose of buying houses become cheaper.

Perhaps the article isn't about font import, those better be in html headers or simply stick to system fonts.

hirako2000··on The case against JPEG XL
The factor is latency. Software decoding takes milliseconds.

Depending on CPU and the video/image resolution, performance drops means the eye perceives lags when the 50ms threshold is reached. For videos, especially at 60fps that matters.

For still images it doesn't.

If it ain't broke why fix it.

hirako2000··on The case against JPEG XL
Lossless AVIF encoding is inferior to JXL though, the article oddly dismisses lossless as a valid case for the web so it ignores the core argument that lossless is critical for some type of content.

I find the hardware support argument far more compelling that diminishing the value of lossless publishing.

hirako2000··on The case against JPEG XL
Lossless dismissed? 11% isn't nothing, that's trillions of images out there. Mozilla's own data shows JXL lossless beating AVIF and WebP. That's the one weakness of avif that bothers me, for lossy and speed it is brilliant. Companies may have another itch with the misleading licensing:

AVIF's "royalty-free" is under active legal attack (Dolby v. Snapchat). JXL has clean ISO commitments so no such suit would be possible. If "free" matters, JXL is safer.

Perceptive quality with the latest AV1 caught up, but that's a rigged timeline. Chrome supported JXL "late", then pulled it altogether. AVIF did improve further yes, it had web usage, it was behind when the race was meant to start. Why would JXL continue to optimize for web once the major browser refuses to support it.

hirako2000··on Revolut confirms customer data breach through fake government requests
I never wrote the government made the specific request that led to the leak. I explain that the government make such requests.

So when a company is requested to hand over sensitive data, they do. For sure when the origin of the request is the government itself (pawned email in this case)

hirako2000··on Revolut confirms customer data breach through fake government requests
The government did request the data. And since the announcement, it has requested highly sensitive data again, and to keep such data, backed by threats of violent repercussions, that businesses cease to operate or to even exist.

That's a dangerous kind of threat to be making, and to act upon. for information that should remain private let alone owned by the bank itself.
