Despite the hilarity of such a thing, is this a sign that HFT is not nearly as profitable as it once was?
Venezuela is very dependent on financing for its oil exploration and infrastructure. The reality is that they simply need to hold the fort until oil rebounds in a year or two. Otherwise a huge portion of their future oil extraction will go to financing as opposed to Venezuela. It is certainly a risk but to say the opposite is not a huge risk with serious consequences is pretty naive.

No it does not at all and as said already it needs to be a creative work(meaning transformative work that deviates from an obvious conclusion) as opposed to simply being difficult. And again, it is definitely not difficult.
How is something this naive in WSJ?

I say this as someone who hasn't eaten meat for well over a decade and a really close meat substitute sounds gross.
I definitely not trying to get into a base line discussion about libertarian property rights ideas. But at least to help you understand what we have right now is a long long way from individual free and clear property ownership of land. Maybe before we start letting people do whatever they want with what you feel like is solely their land we need to address the massive amount of government supplied resources that land owner is currently enjoying.
I would definitely not follow their model of open source development as they are an example of the opposite and equally ineffective extreme.
But I could certainly be wrong and would very curious as well
It's bad enough we have television shows ruining people's metabolism, likely for life, just for some ratings. But then to come from someone claiming to be doing academic research, especially in light of the history of research like this, is repugnant.
Then I just stopped taking interviews with that nonsense altogether and found places to work that I actually wanted to be and that, more importantly, had mutual respect for one another as opposed to being treated like someone who was supposed to be grateful for working at some run of the mill office job. One where we were all supposed to pretend we were given some great gift of fixing someones crappy log file code that broke production. Or adding some api endpoints for a new model.
These jobs aren't all that great and all this nonsense is I'm sure keeping a lot of capable people out of the industry making slightly less money while being treated like human beings and equals.
