hiou··on TTIP trade deal could be re-launched under a different name, say EU ministers
So instead we will stay with the status quo where large multinationals pit country against country in a race to the bottom. Makes sense.
hiou··on Disqus now compatible with Google AMP
You may be even more surprised to hear that some people consider the web essentially Google's platform.
hiou··on Half of U.S. Smartphone Users Aren't Downloading Apps, Data Shows
> iOS web doesn't give you interactions with the device like notifications, geofencing, background refresh, etc. - FTFY
hiou··on Dear Al-Jazeera: thank you for doing the right thing
I certainly wouldn't use a product that could run the risk of having my company publicly attacked by a vendor. I find it hard to believe anyone else is going to take that risk with scrollytelling.io either.
hiou··on Api.ai is joining Google
How's firebase going these days?

Edit: I should add Firebase could have(and should have) been the next PHP/Access. Could have solved almost every SMB business custom software need in a way that a business could go from front-end to front-end and never get locked into another 1,000 crud app for XYZ vertical. Could have wiped it all out. Firebase could have become the data store of the internet. Then Google showed up....

hiou··on Dear Al-Jazeera: Why Steal Our Code?
I almost cared until I read the snarky, passive aggressive tone this article took along with the fact that it intentionally attempts to frame the entire situation differently from how it actually happened. This is not randomly scraping some content and then re-publishing it. It's a contract dispute about whether the original publisher had rights to redistribute it. What a bunch of brats. Grown up. Yuck
hiou··on Libreboot left the GNU project
Word to the wise... anything that you comment here could be used to end your career today or 5 years later when someone discovers this thread. Please choose your words carefully.
hiou··on Announcing new tools, forums, and features
Phabricator is awesome. It felt like it was more for experienced developers or larger organizations when I was using it(in a good way). Something to consider depending on your team.
hiou··on 1 in 5 Seafood Samples Is Fake, Report Finds
Something something free markets fix everything.
hiou··on FBI’s Deep Web Child Porn Ring Questions Role of Gov’t in Society
The above comment is pretty much a work of fiction fyi.
hiou··on Bootstrap 4 Alpha 4 Released
Unless you aren't into herding cats when every developer develops a brand new button / grid / whatever ever time the is a new addition to the site because they can't understand or find the original NIH element styles. If you happen to be lucky enough to be the only person ever working on the project then I would agree.
hiou··on Former Sequoia partners: The Midwest is the future of startups
I can confirm. It has a bit to do with a little brain drain as developers leave for the coasts as well.
hiou··on Show HN: A next gen front-end framework with lots of editable examples
The web experience on iOS is fundamentally broken. What's the point of even mentioning that anymore?
hiou··on Dropbox prompts password resets
This one gets it. Most hashes are fixed length
hiou··on Most olive oils sold in the United States are adulterated or deceptively labeled
But if you start marketing one brand as the real one now you introduce doubt into the other higher margin olive oils. A store could end up instead increasing the purchase of lower margin oils like canola at the expense of their current possibly fake olive oils. Remember in market economies the initial advantage goes to the faker.
hiou··on A Denver Suburb Experiments with Free Lyft Rides to Light Rail
The road utilization has increased as well as the fuel usage for the driving between passenger drop offs and pickups. As well as the commute of the Lyft driver. That said, if it causes people to take the train the next 25 miles into the city as opposed to driving it could actually decrease.
hiou··on Unsafe levels of toxic chemicals found in drinking water for 6M Americans
Good grief. There is very little data this stuff is harmful. Certainly not going to wipe out a town in a weekend. Can't wait for millennials to age a few more years and hopefully get a little context. Being wedged between baby boomers and millennials gets more uncomfortable by the day.
hiou··on My Airbnb Nightmare Reality
It is not amazing how much a company can make on an irrational market pushing full steam ahead? Oops I meant the sharing economy.
hiou··on Street food chef's stall becomes world's first to earn Michelin star
* > Incredibly, the 51-year-old, who works 17 hours a day*

Could anyone comment on if this is an exaggeration? After commuting plus basic life tasks like bathing etc, this would allow him for a realistic maximum of 5 hours of sleep a day. And that is optimistic as likely this results in about 4 hours a day.

It seems like the story of a person who has gone 35 years on 4 hours of sleep a day is possibly more interesting than a Michelin star if this is true.

hiou··on Show HN: Make Slack Bots in Java
"stole"? Come on it's a generic name anyone might come up with. Dial back the rage for a night.
hiou··on IBM Watson correctly diagnoses a form of leukemia
How is this down voted? Steve Cohen is practically synonymous with insider trading in the modern era.
hiou··on Are users trying to make developers angry?
I think that comment may be in relation to tool software such as a CAD program as opposed to service software.

In tool software it is often impossible to always know what the operator is looking to achieve as it is often novel. Service software is quite the opposite where there are likely a few well defined goals the software is attempting to help the customer achieve.

hiou··on The new Seattle, where everything looks the same
Has density solved Hong Kong's housing affordability problem? How about Paris or Tokyo?

Why is a significantly less dense city such as Jacksonville, FL so much less expensive?

hiou··on Massachusetts Bans Employers from Asking Applicants About Previous Pay
Then why are developers outside of the higher pay tiers paid about the same as a unionized UPS driver?
hiou··on Massachusetts Bans Employers from Asking Applicants About Previous Pay
They have you trained well.
hiou··on Disrupting Uber
Investors, shareholders, owners etc.
hiou··on Disrupting Uber
Uber is a investment fueled churn machine right now. Supply and demand(even as overly simplistic that model is) has yet to come into the equation. We will not have any idea the validity of the business model until the never before seen massive expenditures in driver acquisition subsides. Which probably won't be for several years or more.
hiou··on Ruby on Rails Tutorial
I don't know. I just did a Rails backend. Feel like I couldn't have written more than 100 lines of ruby in the whole thing. Not sure its that important.
hiou··on Facebook Tax Bill Over Ireland Move Could Cost $5B
Nope. Accountants and Lawyers end up doing value addition because corporations like Facebook take things to the legal gray border of the regulations. The whole double irish is barely useful if you give your assets fair market value. Don't be so gullible to believe this needed to be complex.
hiou··on Remove Firefox Hello from FF49
Mozilla's leadership has become a sad thing to watch. This whole wannabe product first lean startup nonsense just gets worse and worse. I was one of the few Firefox OS users but at this point, I'm using Chrome and Android. It's not the end of the world but it's just sad to see an organization that has historically done so many good things be torn down by awful executive leadership.

Every member of the Steering Committee should issue a public apology and resign for gross incompetence.
