hiou··on HN comments are underrated
The problem is that many people who are hurt easily by cynical and sarcastic behavior(which is very different than being as asshole) typically take themselves very seriously and it's a sign that they are very self focused and place their own concerns way above those of the team.

I wonder if there is a language barrier but cynical and sarcastic is very very different from putting people down.

hiou··on HN comments are underrated
Nope. Seen both many times. The positive enforcement causes no one to share any negative thoughts after a while and the company smiles it's way out of business.

Unfortunately people who will not speak up out of fear are toxic to company culture. The creative process is immediately destroyed when people need to second guess everything they say or do since it is impossible to know if you are about to say the wrong thing.

If someone can not tolerate cynical and sarcastic comments they need to be removed quickly. This is very different from mean spirited put downs and intentionally hurtful comments.

Stuff like "idk that button looks like it was mad in 2002" or "I swear we have the shittiest parser ever right here". Is good and fine.

"You talk to much", "why did you write it like that? It doesn't make any sense" Are bad.

Notice how the first like says "we" or talks about a specific feature and the others talk about specific people.

hiou··on A Professor Who Was Right About Index Funds All Along
Index fund tracking has become successful because one of the goals of US Government policy is to maintain that things like the S&P 500 continue to go up over time. If they go down people get voted out of office.

So the index funds have the full force of the US Government watching over them. This is why economics is not just some math puzzle but often more about politics and sociology.

hiou··on Cuomo signs bill prohibiting Airbnb listings in NYC
As someone who uses Airbnb regularly I can assure you the majority are either people who use one empty room as a hotel or the whole place. I see very very few "I'm going away for the weekend / week / month" listings. The whole rating system rewards people who have consistent and frequent lodging available.

How long would you estimate it takes someone to "properly learn version control"? When I work with very junior developers they pick up git quite well in a week or two at most. Beyond that almost every team I work with uses their own special homegrown git workflow anyway.

I don't mean to put you down for you requirements but git is really really easy to learn. It would be a shame to miss out on a talented developer for something an otherwise well qualified developer could learn in a weekend.

hiou··on Don’t let your anger persist
Is that like the modern equivalent of a whipping boy?
hiou··on Don’t let your anger persist
This is gross. Maybe don't be an asshole because you are hurting someone by doing it? Terrifying that a human being needs to think about the world in such a self centric way.
hiou··on How to Destroy the Myth of the Proper Solution

hiou··on Taking PHP Seriously
Actually it throws an E_NOTICE. Something a fair amount of projects require you to turn off. You know what else throws an E_NOTICE?

    $a = notice_there_are_no_quotes;
    echo $a; // $a gets assigned the string 'notice_there_are_not_quotes'
This is super fun when you attempt to use a constant and misspell it.

    $b = MY_CONSTANTT;
    echo $b; // $b is now the string 'MY_CONSTANTT' instead of whatever the correct MY_CONSTANT was set to.
Which is why in both PHP and JavaScript if you really cared about what you were doing, both of those would be methods that throw errors if misspelled

    let a = new A();
    a.setName('John');
    doSomething(a.getNmea()); // Error

    $a = new A();
    $a->setName('John');
    doSomething($a->getNmea()); // Also error
hiou··on The Nobel Prize in Literature 2016 awarded to Bob Dylan
The music industry packaged up singers like Dylan for whichever vertical they needed. Anyone who was able to navigate that system as successfully as he did was certainly not a rebel and the music itself was nothing extraordinarily unique if you look into the long tail of music being made at the time. It's like saying 7-Up is the uncola and you are rejecting the establishment by drinking it instead of Coke.

hiou··on Freelancers Now Make Up 35% of U.S. Workforce
The big difference for me at the time I was freelance was that there was actually a point to getting insurance. Pre-ACA if I got a serious mid to long term illness my insurance company would just drop me anyway. Although once ACA was enacted it was still kind of pointless in that the deductible put me in a position where unless I got a mid to long term illness I'd never use it. So in reality I just went without and planned to just declare bankruptcy if anything bad happened. Bonus of the new ACA era is that I could just wait for open enrollment(hopefully I would get really sick at the right time of year) and pick up a gold/platinum plan if I did end up with something that required long term care.
hiou··on San Jose: New law would make city first to allow “tiny homes” for homeless
> the former accountant ended up outdoors after a divorce and a brain tumor.

Sounds like our current resource allocation system here in the US is working great! Seems like a totally sensible reason for a human being to be forced to live without basic shelter. They obviously have no useful skills to provide society so let's just throw them away. What a time to be alive!

hiou··on Just shut up and let your devs concentrate, advises Joel Spolsky
Because that's essentially what we do. Assembly and ultimately build products based off a list of specifications. You could say it's more difficult but beyond the fact that more people have degrees I'm not sure how different it really is. An open floor plan doesn't seem all that different than a room full of sewing machines etc. Certainly this doesn't apply to all software development. But for the majority portion the analogy isn't too far off.
hiou··on Just shut up and let your devs concentrate, advises Joel Spolsky
Programming is the same as working on an assembly line floor. You are not some fancy white collar worker. Not much difference in type of work(and pay) than an automobile plant. They don't get private offices either.

hiou··on Hyperloop – The Missing Ruby Front-end Library
There is nothing more miserable than working with a team that cannot and/or is unwilling to work with anything but their language of choice. But honestly this typical goes even deeper than language. Its often difficult to get a team to work with something outside of the framework they are used to. Even if it could take 3 times as long or even is just flat out impossible without it.

In my experience it has everything to do with developers who like to feel under control and feel really uncomfortable if they are not the smartest person in the room.

hiou··on TTIP trade deal could be re-launched under a different name, say EU ministers
I should just let this be down voted but there needs to be overwhelming repeated rebuttals to this very misleading framing.

This whole thing tries to use the fact that no southern states voted for Lincoln to frame it like secession was actually just because they felt their voice wasn't being heard. What that ignores is that slavery was the main(almost only) economic driver in the south. The election was about slavery. The north was done with it. The vote was a signal to the wealthy and powerful of the south that the north was going to abolish slavery and there was nothing they could do about it. Sucession was their last attempt to keep the massive amount of money being made via slavery.
