hinata08··on Marketers are Addicted to Bad Data (2020)
A (very) large but low paying company that struggled to hire around here also came down to that

Managers hired a consulting firm to get a report about why they couldn't hire : The report confirmed they couldn't get application because they overpaid engineers and their job ads were too generous.

Sometimes, you just have to use any broken maths to give the only thing that managers want to hear.

hinata08··on Tell HN: Cloudflare silently injects its analytics when you switch nameservers
>they don't secretly gain access to your system

They are only "enabling Web Analytics by default" "by providing a powerful, in-depth monitoring solution that helps you debug and optimize applications" when users do not come from the EU

Cloudflare is doing a great job most of the time, but I feel like this feature was speed run through approvals and could use more discussions

hinata08··on Tell HN: Cloudflare silently injects its analytics when you switch nameservers
Cloudflare used to effectively allow you to block users coming from Tor or proxies, forcing them to chose between not visiting your site or disabling their privacy features. (when Akamai was able to still allow legitimate users)

They do a much better job these days, at least

hinata08··on Tell HN: Cloudflare silently injects its analytics when you switch nameservers
> Rather than count unique IP addresses (requiring storing state about each visitor), we simply count page views that originate from a distinct referral or navigation event, avoiding the need to store information that might be considered personal data.

They don't store IP addresses (but other referral ids that identify users in a different way) ; and they exclude EU visitors by default.

You do your opinion

hinata08··on Tell HN: Cloudflare silently injects its analytics when you switch nameservers
> Makes me wonder if their stuff is GDPR-compliant without consent.

GDPR service providers and partners do not have to consent. Consent is for the users.

Services providers have to tell you when they collect your data, and they will most likely fail to do that if they don't even know their partner injects code.

*So you're liable if you host on cloudflare.*

Now, they somehow avoid this :

>when enabling Web Analytics, you can choose to drop requests from European and UK visitors if you so desire (listed here specifically), meaning we will not collect any RUM metrics from traffic that passes through our European and UK data centers. The version of Web Analytics that will be enabled by default excludes data from EU visitors (this can be changed in the dashboard if you want).

By default, it is only enabled for visitors from out of the EU, like so many services that respect your privacy and your concerns are their first priority

hinata08··on Delta probes Wi-Fi deauth attack on flight carrying DEF CON attendees
You would be surprised by the number of professionals who would be at peak tech performance if they could pull it off

IT security is a lot more about the processes, risk, and data management that technical performance these days.

The book to study for CISSP CBK is hardly any technical (The Code Book is more technical than that)

The ISO 27000 series defines an Information security management system that doesn't even need to involve "computer", as it discusses more about data in the organization.

Research these days is also based a lot on how to address security risks on top of safety risks, not just how to hack any system (and I do believe that the obsession of the aviation industry about these studies is why everything was ready so that suspects were met with police)

hinata08··on Delta probes Wi-Fi deauth attack on flight carrying DEF CON attendees
life hacks are also hacker news, I guess x)
hinata08··on Delta probes Wi-Fi deauth attack on flight carrying DEF CON attendees
Delta's setup and procedures were able to catch up on that. Good move from their side !

Police was involved

No offense, but I doubt that most other public spaces or transport would have reacted like that.

It's not just because planes fly, but the industry around them has planned for everything.

This Hacker News post could be "Delta is ready"

even if they're a flop, you'll be told they're too big to fail. And now, you have to bail them out and buy their HBM instead of paying for your RAM

I hope that China makes up for the capacity that RAM producers are not willing to produce, so that the latter are sent back to the past (with no bailout nor protectionism)

hinata08··on After 80+y of France being France, Trump's diplomats took the bait [video]
"we will not be affording them the benefit of listening to their politicized drivel" as the diplomat says as he's making the drivel viral
hinata08··on After 80+y of France being France, Trump's diplomats took the bait [video]
So something just happened at the UN yesterday.

UN had been arguably irrelevant for a few decades. France had been irrelevant since it's been absorbed by the EU and they're just posting takes. This has been best described on an Economist article featured here a few months ago https://www.economist.com/europe/2026/02/18/that-irritating-...

But now, one of their takes made the news https://x.com/FranceONUGeneve/status/2081064968586232263

It happened as US diplomats at the UN felt so insecure and were so inexperienced that they not only took the bait, but made a CSPAN13 hearing hilarious and viral

https://www.france24.com/en/france/20260727-us-walks-out-of-...

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ror0VmAp9O8

Why are American diplomats unwilling to publicly acknowledge that Trump has a different foreign policy than Biden and Harris ? It just make them look like they don't have any coherence.

And since when have they been acknowledging and giving credit to what France says ? They're supposed to fly above it and talk to the EU

This is ridiculous. China is getting ahead by just being consistent when they're saying they don't care about Ukraine, they just want Taiwan. Ukraine proved that Europe will not have the will to do anything in Asia.

In the meantime, Trump made NATO relevant again after silently quitting it and abandoning Europe, yet their diplomats make scenes and feel threatened by France's opinions as they can't assume their own policies

What a world we are living in

hinata08··on US citizen charged after GrapheneOS phone wipes during airport search
Alright. Most places would investigate crimes and charge you for them before they look at your defense itself, so I had several worries about that

One of which is self indications (even of things that cops didn't know about or couldn't prove) that would allow them to just question anyone into admitting even a parking offense, but I guess you can shut up indeed

I was worried that they could use any crime in a broad area and just force everyone to say with who they were and what they were doing, but you can also shut up

I was also worried than on investigations with no real crime involved, they could just go play jeopardy and ask you what you were doing minute by minute, and get you to talk until something gets inaccurate (while they have cctv but you have no vcr in your brain). But again, you can shut up.

When I'll be in America, I'll remember not to talk to cops.

Not even to 911 as emergency calls are error prone : You said someone was attacked by a suv and knife when it was a pickup truck and machete, you go to jail

hinata08··on US citizen charged after GrapheneOS phone wipes during airport search
The french cybersecurity agency (ANSSI) used to share leaflets to tell you to do just that. The US government wasn't named, but it's part of the ones that like to do some economic intelligence and no euro who read the news would trust it more than a banana republic when it comes to crossing the border.

Now having a corporate device with little data is no longer outstanding. Everything is in the cloud these days.

As for personal devices, you can explain you're taking a dumb cheap laptop for your holiday as you're working on a desktop PC at home. You're not taking your entire house when you're on a trip, just a laptop to check tourism information and post blog posts

I myself bought a crap laptop on ebay to shove it in bags and backpacks and go to conferences and not be sad the day it's broken.

but above all, he's a citizen so shouldn't care about looking "suspect". He has a right, not a privilege, to cross that border. They can explain a judge how he looked sus if they really want to search his home.

Privatize revenues, socialize costs of business

You're not "competitive" if you have to pay for workers, ink or investments. Workers only get a wage because of communist populists who don't understand business, and (insert place - even the Philippines these days) has the most highest taxes and wages around the world.

hinata08··on CO2 overload, detected in human blood, suggests toxic atmosphere within 50 years
Software is allowing industries to be so much smarter and efficient. Even without advanced systems, a 20€ smart switch allows my personal water boiler to turn on when solar and wind are so available that power prices go low or negative (and a startup, Sobry, allows me to enjoy or suffer spot prices thanks to my smart power meter that sends hourly usage data over the grid).

If your smart switches support it (Tuya/Lidl gateways doesn't, so there is still work to do), you can get some cashback when they momentarily turn some devices on or off to help offset imbalances on the power grid without relying on gas turbines.

Software is allowing governments to provide services online, 24/7, making driving to their overly large buildings a thing of the past.

Software is changing the way companies work with their customers and suppliers. It cut business trips so much that airlines like United had to review their routes at some point.

Software allows more trains to run on each track, and improves cross border services in dense areas in Europe

Software developers who support open source initiative such as LineageOS, ChromeOS or lightweight Linux distributions allow to keep devices for longer. It is valuable when manufacturers and Microsoft would like you to buy new hardware.

YouTube tutorials and online marketplaces allow customers to fix their old stuff or to buy second hands. It makes the economy more circular than it used to

Simulators allow new generations to fly cessnas or race cars on 1000 electrical watts at home, while video games allow kids to have fun together without racing cars on open roads like you used to

hinata08··on NyarchLinux proposes a (kindof) age verification system for open source OS
In these dark lawless ages, knowing how childish or OLD your users get can become key in making arch based linux safe and accessible

To resolve this thing while still preserving users privacy (we avoid finger pointing !), Nyarch linux proposes a disruptive workflow, challenging users with anime and pop culture related questions to prove what they're up to

Available now on github https://github.com/NyarchLinux/AgeVerification

Calling it a tool is fine.

Some people would like to pretend means of production are holy assets you're supposed to value and trade (INVEST!!! making value is for losers and _these_ workers), when it's just a consummable that should serve a purpose right now.

A computer is a tool and customizing the case is not unheard of.

hinata08··on Sony erases digital content from libraries; reminded we don't own what we buy
It indeed looks like consumers felling deceived when they thought they purchased something is a possible liability.

I'm sure the studio will watch the fallouts with amusement, waiting for them to come back

However, dealing with that kind of free market big business loving buster is still a huge business risk that requires management and negotiations. I can get it if Sony limits their business risks at some point, even if the severance initially costs them.

it would be so fun to be an insider to these negotiations

hinata08··on Sony erases digital content from libraries; reminded we don't own what we buy
these services are still ok for both suggestions and hard to find media

I let the Deezer bot surprise me OPM and I absolutely loved it

I also use it to listen to the Chinese rap, which would be a pain to get otherwise

Otherwise their human curated playlists are real good

But I agree with you, it's not how you "own" media. You only get the service to access media

hinata08··on Sony erases digital content from libraries; reminded we don't own what we buy
this company is also a king when it comes to pulling rugs

On their TV offering, in 2018 and 2022, they did pull the rug themselves by stopping to broadcast the free to air outlet which has #1 audience on the market, TF1, and this commercial dispute went to courts

Long story short, it's big business (not just inde studio does politics) and they're notoriously anything but victims at it

hinata08··on Sony erases digital content from libraries; reminded we don't own what we buy
it seems like it's not how the contract was written

Also, on previous commercial disputes, these french studios and media outlets held an all or nothing stance, often asking to be completely removed from the offering of ISPs if they can't get the money they want.

That's their way of getting what they want ; and as the ones who support this kind of move put it (so pretty much THEM) : you have the right to contract and do what you want with what you own

It's embarrassing enough for Sony or ISPs, it's highly visible to consumers, so they will not accept a middle point like you describe.

hinata08··on Sony erases digital content from libraries; reminded we don't own what we buy
To the defence of Sony :

I was getting concerned, but if only StudioCanal movies are getting pulled as Sony doesn't need to pay for that, *it's but a loss*

The company was bought by the same tycoon who bought mainstream media to get frequencies, then replaced journalists with conservative anchors who ditch the news and rant about feminists and Muslims all day.

They were recently known for Bac Nord. It is honestly a very good cop movie, but that also outrageously rewrites a case in which dirty drug dealing cops were busted, in case some viewers are not willing to make the diff between reality and a good fiction

They made the headline around the Cannes festival this year, saying they should no longer work with woke movies.

Their case is getting embarrassing in France, as their owner is now the first (but not the only) purveyor of obscurantism for the masses
