hijp··on The Animal Is Tired
I read the first book and like you thought it was just interesting, but it was the juxtaposition of book one and two that made me go “i have to finish this”.

* not really a spoiler, it happens at the very start of book two [rot13] *

some bits are a drag, some are so cheezy, but you just roll with it and it’s a fun ride with some amazing high points.

hijp··on Neighbour manages to pollute the 2.4 ghz spectrum with his 120 IoT devices
Eero worked well for me.
hijp··on Before buying a NYT subscription, here's what it'll take to cancel it
There should be a law that you can cancel via the same method that you signed up.

For example you can sign up for recurring paid channels on the Amazon app on Roku, but have to log in on the computer to cancel.

What happens is my 80-year old parents try a week of HBO, Starz, Showtime, Britbox etc. Then can't figure out where they actually signed up. Was it under roku, under amazon, under a new app? What credentials did they use? Then they forget about it and are billed in perpetuity.

hijp··on Request for Startups
perhaps decision paralysis?
hijp··on Faroe Island roundabout under the Atlantic Ocean
Whoops, missed a zero when putting it into google perhaps.

Here's the Hitachi Rail page with the trains, looks like four per car. http://italy.hitachirail.com/en/honolulu_381.html

So at 8 tons per axle its still within OP's truck limit.

Anyway I'm just kvetching because our 20-mile light rail is taking 22-years to build, is half complete, and a billion dollars over budget (as of now).

hijp··on Faroe Island roundabout under the Atlantic Ocean
I don't know what the axle weight is but each car weighs 32.6 metric tons and travel in trains of 4-cars, the top speed is 88kmh (48kmh average).

hijp··on Faroe Island roundabout under the Atlantic Ocean
Sure but from the main article I couldn't tell why they needed an underwater roundabout in the first place.

It's amazing they did this in four years for $160mil while here in Hawaii our elevated rail broke ground in 2011, is going to cost between $9 and $13 billion, and is expected to be completed in 2033. Please send the construction team over here next...

hijp··on Feral pig populations have grown to unmanageable numbers
Are there any audio deterrents for pigs like there are for birds?

I think I've read about playing hawk screams or bird distress calls to scare away birds from airports. Would something similar like playing a cougar scream be enough to keep pigs out of an area?

hijp··on Why I don't give .edu discounts
I'm a student, I'm broke, I like the convenience of using the .edu for discounts. Sometimes I run into places that use a third party verification service that asks for a picture of a student id with current semester visible.

But if the problem is equity, then I like Sam Harris's model of offering his content free, no questions asked, for a year. I subscribed to his podcast this way and received an automated response immediately with the rss feed.

I never want money to be the reason why someone can’t get access to my digital content. If you really can’t afford a monthly or annual subscription to SamHarris.org, just contact us, and we’ll give you a 1-year membership for free.

hijp··on Lord of the Manor: a medieval city builder game
Dude congrats! This is an amazing game, I just spent an hour and a half upgrading to Keep.

I love how even a simple game like this can show the messiness of urban planning. I'm trying to keep people happy and fed and educated, so sometimes that means demolishing a house or two to build a school.

Really fun.

hijp··on Mozilla Lifeboat
Does anyone know how the 3d effect in the header was achieved?
hijp··on Mars images rendered in 4K [video]
The narrator explains why getting HD video would be impractical, but I disagree that we get the same experience from panning stills.

imagine seeing the swirling dust, shifting sands, the bumps and parallax from a moving rover. that would be so cool!

hijp··on The Cost of Free Doughnuts: 70 Years of Regret
Yeah for me the hangout with the pizza and beer is the real reward!
hijp··on Ask HN: How come there is no example code for B2B-SaaS apps?
I’m using Jumpstart Pro (paid) for a rail’s app i’m working on, I know you requested node, but you may find it very useful to see how they implemented multitenancy and ruby/rails code is very readable.

hijp··on Story of the Roku Player (2013)
I 'upgraded' my parents Roku 3 with the Apple TV 4K, but they ended up going back to the Roku exclusively.

The remote on the Roku is much more intuitive and the d-pad allows them to select what they want with confidence. The apple tv's remote with its touchpad is unwieldy by comparison.

hijp··on New MacBook Air
Damn, this leaves a bitter taste in my mouth because I bought a Macbook Air in September for $1,800 and it's performed terribly.

I can barely compile Gatsby sites and it struggles on displaying Apple's own marketing pages (that run fine on my ipad and iphone).

Even more, you can only trade in up to the 2018 Macbook Air, which means I'm stuck with this lemon.

hijp··on Learning to Read in Your 30s Profoundly Transforms the Brain
Not OP, but for me the biggest boon to my reading has been the kindle for a variety of reasons:

1. If I'm not into a book, I wont force it, I can just jump to a new one.

2. 1-click downloads, if something sounds good I can just send a sample to the kindle. If it really sounds good I'll just buy it.

3. Portability, it's always in my bag and the charge lasts weeks.

I get book recommendations from Hacker News reading lists, podcasts, and friends. Then just download the sample.

hijp··on Modern Front-end in Rails
Thanks for this, I've been fooling around with trying to get a Rails + Vue app started and sampling a bunch of tutorials.

One thing that would help me understand this better is a short overview of your strategy and why you chose it as opposed to some other options mentioned like rails api + JS-framework frontend.

It goes from history to nitty gritty, so I'd have to follow through step by step to get an idea how it all fits together.

hijp··on Spaceplan
Nicely done! I just finished with no cheats and thoroughly enjoyed myself.

The level of polish is what kept me clicking 285 times just to 'start' the game. Very cool.

hijp··on The Future of Podcasting
That's a super depressing future.

My imagined future involves serving podcasts with different ads each time you download the episode. Maybe a subscription to ad-free versions. There's no need for a separate player for subscriptions, Rss feeds can already be password protected.

If anyone is working on the above, hit me up - I'd love to talk.

From the rules:

"Be respectful. Anyone sharing work is making a contribution, however modest.

Instead of "you're doing it wrong", suggest alternatives. When someone is learning, help them learn more.

When something isn't good, you needn't pretend that it is. But don't be gratuitously negative."

hijp··on Ring has now raised $100M for video doorbells
I like this a lot because of its inconspicuous design. Are there any other security cameras that aren't bulky?

You can get an iphone 6s camera replacement for around $40, it seems like the quality is far superior to the current consumer security cameras on the market - so why are ring and nest the only options?

hijp··on Show HN: Podcat – Imdb for podcasts

hijp··on Show HN: Podcat – Imdb for podcasts
Thank you! I definitely forgot to account for video podcasts, I haven't really followed any since diggnation ended!
