hihungryimdad··on Garmin Connect services were down
Rojee, could you provide more information about grabbing the FIT file from the watch? Also, what kind of analysis do you do locally?

... Sorry, what type of file is it? Just a CSV?

hihungryimdad··on One sleepless night can rapidly reverse depression for several days in mice
I have experience with this and commented on a similar thread in 2018.

Update if anyone cares: I feel like I'm damn near 100%.

hihungryimdad··on Bitwarden: Generate a Username
I'm hosting bitwarden in a docker container running on my synology nas. Loving it so far.
hihungryimdad··on How to get back into a hacked Facebook account
Recently my facebook was locked for "Suspicious activity". The only reset option was to reset by email, but I no longer had access to that email account (this is my failure, I knew I didn't, but never updated).

After a few days of trying filling out all sorts of weird forms on facebook that went most likely no where I came across an older reddit thread that says to try and go through Oculus.

Filled out a trouble ticket saying that when I tried to link my Oculus account with facebook that facebook had appeared to lock my account due to "Suspicious activity". They asked for my facebook information and for a picture of my Oculus' serial number or proof that it had been purchased and being shipped. Whoops, didn't have either. My friend on the other hand had a few and was gracious enough to send me his serial number, that did the trick.

Oculus said someone from facebook would be in contact within a week. That still hasn't happened (Been 6 weeks now). BUT, after approximately 3 days my account recovery options changed and I could choose 5 of my friends to unlock my account. Viola, I was in.

Not sure if it was spamming some of the "unused" forms or going through Oculus. But if you are desperate a friend with an Oculus might just save you.

hihungryimdad··on Ask HN: How did you become a software engineer?
I got in to programming because of my other hobbies. I remember playing an NFL game on the Dreamcast. It wouldn't keep statistics from the past years, only the current year. I remember researching and learning about the LAMP stack and made my own statistics tracker for the game.

I've thought about volunteering in my local community with kids who are interested in computers. I think finding out about their other hobbies and finding a way to tie in programming with them would be a great way to get them interested and stay motivated.

hihungryimdad··on The open calendar, task and note space is a mess
I'm in the process of doing a similar task, and I'm using my Synology DS418play for all of it.

I wanted to roll my own server solution, but I just don't have time anymore. The simplicity of Synology is baffling, and it has been one of my most favorite purchases, ever. I was able to set up an SSL cert for my domain, a reverse proxy on the Synology NAS in a matter of minutes.

This past month I've migrated my Evernote's to Synology Notes and lastpass to a bitwarden docker container running on the NAS. I'm planning on switching from Google Calendar to Synology Calendar in the next few weeks.

I haven't looked in to it, so I wouldn't be surprised if Synology has rolled their own protocols for most of these applications. But they are well supported across Desktop (Mac/Linux/Windows) and their Phone applications work great.

Again, might not be the solution you are looking for, but the ease and compatibility across various platforms might be worth the tradeoff.

hihungryimdad··on Could an Eye Doctor Diagnose Alzheimer’s Before You Have Symptoms?
Medicine free except for Vyzulta eye drops for my glaucoma.
hihungryimdad··on Could an Eye Doctor Diagnose Alzheimer’s Before You Have Symptoms?
Definitely interested in this. I had my genome sequenced at 23andme and they say I am at a higher risk for early onset Alzheimer's (My parents and grandparents were/are fine) because I have the two mutations they test for.

Just last year I was diagnosed with glaucoma, at the ripe age of 32. So I go to the eye doctor somewhat regularly now. Wonder if this is something I can start keeping track of, for science, or something.

hihungryimdad··on Building an automatic chicken coop door opener
Really fascinated by this kind of stuff, but getting into it seems really overwhelming. I think it would be something really fun for me and the kids to do together, does anyone have any personal beginner resources to recommend?

Of course I'll do the googles too.

hihungryimdad··on The antidepressant effect of sleep deprivation
Yep, once I caught up on my sleep the next day would be the same anxiety, depression cycle all over. Crazy to read about this today after having this exact phenomenon happen to me years ago.
hihungryimdad··on The antidepressant effect of sleep deprivation
Poor sleep I would think is different than no sleep. The nights I get poor sleep, approximately 2~3 hours or less, the following day would be nothing but intrusive thoughts, depression about those thoughts and exhaustion. The nights I had NO sleep the following day all of those symptoms would virtually be gone.
hihungryimdad··on The antidepressant effect of sleep deprivation
Roughly 2 years ago I fell into a depression because of debilitating anxiety. The anxiety would keep me awake through the night. Low and behold the whole next day the depression and anxiety would be gone. I wouldn't be overly tired either, so the trade off was fine. This would happen roughly once or twice a week. Always, the next day following a sleepless night I pretty much felt 'normal'.

Eventually I swallowed my pride and went to the doctor and was prescribed an SSRI & NDRI. I was too afraid to take the SSRI(with anxiety can some OCD, I was obsessed for awhile I was becoming schizophrenic) so only took the NDRI(Wellbutrin, generic). Eventually it pulled me out of my depression and I was began sleeping normally again. I weened off the NDRI about 6 months later.

Luckily the depression hasn't came back, in full force. I go through cycles of what I would say "mini-depression" every once awhile, but I am able to push through and conquer. The medicine was a must for me to get through my depression and get back on a normal sleep cycle. I don't miss the sleepless nights at all, but they sure helped me stay somewhat sane during those rough times.
