high_priest··on Show HN: I made a app that uses NFC as a physical switch to block distractions
ScreenZen works great. One would have to convince the dev to include NFC support.
high_priest··on Coding Font Selection 'Tournament'
Isn't comic sans actually very readable and a recommendation for dyslexic people?
high_priest··on App Should Have Been a Website (and Probably Your Game Too)
I feel like I have much more control over "when" I share my location, if permission is granted to "uber app" not "uber domain".

All the reasons I come up with, can be easily argued "you can do the same thing in a browser". But still, it is not the same.

high_priest··on App Should Have Been a Website (and Probably Your Game Too)
I have learned JS & used it extensively in many projects. Including modern SPAs. And I absolutely despise it & wish I could use something like recently trendy GO or RUST.

JS has absolutely no rhyme or reason, single threaded nature makes it gunk up browsers crazy quickly & the insane bloat of "frameworks", which attempt to completely replace already great APIs, while working on top of them... IS CRAZY!

high_priest··on Grayjay Desktop App
I love the dictation (STT) app from the same (FUTO) creator. It has completely replaced any other dictation solutions on my phone & it is fully offline!
high_priest··on Dline: A tool that presents important data in the form of a calendar in terminal
The UI lookr great, but I have the same question. What is the workflow / use case for this?
high_priest··on Three Mistakes from Dart/Flutter's Weak PRNG
Are PRNG the letters on an automatic transmission stick?
high_priest··on You need 4 colors
No, it is a simple 1:1 hue relation. You have to match other components colors for accessibility.

Like 320 in dark mode, makes the filled buttons, white text, invisible

high_priest··on You need 4 colors
Why does everything have to be tailwind now?

This could be so much more practical with simple css definitions.

high_priest··on The success and failure of Ninja (2020)
> I also believe that programmers feel latency and it affects their mood even if they don't notice it. (Google has recently done some research in this area that kinda confirmed my belief, here's hoping they'll publish it publicly!)

Anyone knows if it happened? Has the google research on latency been published?

high_priest··on ZetaOffice: LibreOffice in the Browser
What does "Nextcloud will eat your data" mean, specifically?

Do you mean the applications of the suit are buggy, or are they somehow hackable / leaking private information?

high_priest··on Reply on Bluesky and Decentralization
Wkat does URL ownership have to do with control over content? DNS & HTTP hosting are just another services. Maybe a bit less vulnerable themselves, than some social media website. But still, even facebook does routing errors & internet archive gets hacked.
high_priest··on Reply on Bluesky and Decentralization
What are the odds, the Direct Messaging solution, could be inspired / replicate the Matrix protocol? I love how the system works, despite many shortcomings (mostly on the front-end), especially the bridges to other services functionality.

Is there a chance the direct messaging task could enjoy some cooperation with the Matrix protocol / Element people?

I have little-to-no knowledge about the politics, goals & inner-working of both groups.

high_priest··on Poisoning the Day
THIS is a brilliant metaphor. I see it myself, how being tired during the day, allows me to justify avoidance of important conflicts. Instead I prefer do indulge myself in the carnival of LED light, doing things which would have little-to-no priority in the middle of social activities. Without the stimuli & light of modern tech, this wouldn't have a chance to be a thing.

Also, I have started thinking about my Night Owliness, as a manifestation of avoidant character in general. The "waiting till deadline to do a sprint" type of mentality.

high_priest··on Poisoning the Day
I love how you have connected the dots between evaluation of ideas, metaphorisation & invention of consciousness. Linking to relevant book.

I've come up with the same, internalised, realisation, based on my relation with religion & science. Both are a way to describe our world with metaphors (e.g. electric & water currents). At some point, for some people, one is a more attractive way, to describe our relation with the environment.

high_priest··on Teach yourself to echolocate
They are probably constantly aware of surfaces the cane is bouncing off & use it as a redundant confirmation of what they "see" by touch
high_priest··on Teach yourself to echolocate (2018)
I have played alot of videogames & at some point identified, how can I guess, the source of sounds. Guess, because it's nowhere near actual approximation. Most often, source is guessed by context. E.g. The door knocking sound illusion, which was used to troll streamers.

Then you have directional localisation based on delay between ears, difference in volume & properties of reverberations. Things to the sides are going to arrive in either ear at different moment. Add source if first echo & you have confirmation that a sound is coming from either right or left. The more directly to the side is the sound, the bigger the delay between ears is, so you get approximate angle.

Now we consider sound muffling, caused by shape of our head & ears. Things in front are going to sound clearer in the opposite ear, than sounds from the back.

The same principle is used for detection of height. Things below are going to get muffled, things above will be clearer. In reality, feeling sounds with the whole body helps in source localisation, which can't be emulated with headphones.

high_priest··on Uno Platform Studio: GUI Designer for Cross-Platform .NET Applications
A "dominant tool" is the one Visual Studio sets default for installed workflow package
high_priest··on I Followed the Official AWS Amplify Guide and Was Charged $1,100

high_priest··on New Windows driver signature bypass allows kernel rootkit installs
From my experience, it's that users are administrators by default. And it is super easy to convince them, to run anything with elevated permissions.

high_priest··on Swift is a more convenient Rust
I've heard so much about Machine Learning in recent years, that I couldn't fathom ML be used in any other context & be understood.
high_priest··on LwIP – Lightweight IP Stack
Can you say, with which hardware does, the LWIP stack, work well?
high_priest··on Swift is a more convenient Rust
Yes! And C# is just more convenient C.
high_priest··on 1M Users
Scrolling through these profiles in the age of text generating AI, gives me this uncanny feeling, that what I am reading is just random gibberish spat out by a LLM.

I feel like anything I'd post on this platform, would get lost in giant noise of generated feces.

Maybe it's just, the unknown world of "artsy" people is what is really so off-putting. Maybe I am just getting old and don't understand this joy of childish expression anymore. But the other, most popular platforms, seem to have more appeal for followong reasons: - Facebook works around ads (pages) & groups about my (technical) interests, there isn't really a reason for AI spam. If any would appearx it is easy to make them disappear. You get some ads here & there, but content generating bots are often named bots & post content we've agreed to. - Discord gives you high walled gardens for every topic you are interested in. So, one really needs to get out of their way to get content they are not interested in right now. Plus, everything feels like a DM, even the public chats are all just quick chats. - X is literally a politics platform, so I am not expecting AI content from verified account of a diplomat, or media person.

high_priest··on Peng – A minimal Rust-based quadrotor simulation pipeline
