hieronymusN··on RetroShare: secure communications with friends
Many many fond memories of WASTE file transfers.
hieronymusN··on A Depressive Journey With MongoDB
Were you doing any connection pooling with Mongo? I'm curious what driver you were using, etc.
hieronymusN··on Cutting the Cord on Cable
I have Clear 4G as a backup and have found the speeds to be highly variable and sometime have no service at all. I live in an "excellent coverage" area and keep the little WiFi hotspot on my window sill.

Also, their customer service is.... not great.

hieronymusN··on Cutting the Cord on Cable
Interesting... I used to get Earthlink over TWC cable but abandoned it to get TWC's WideBand service (had to switch to RoadRunner). Earthlink does not (or didn't at the time) have anything close to those speeds. Still, I've haggled TWC down before by trying to cancel services, won't hurt to try again.
hieronymusN··on Cutting the Cord on Cable
I have a Clear4G mobile box sitting right here next to my keyboard. I have this as a backup since my TWC connection completely crapped out for 3 days and I work remote. While it is easy to install (walk to BestBuy and purchase, turn on) I've found the speeds to be highly variable, sometimes losing bandwidth all together. I live in an area zoned for "Excellent coverage" so not sure what the issue is.
hieronymusN··on Cutting the Cord on Cable
But where is the author getting his internet service from?

For instance, I live in Brooklyn, and the only reliable high-speed internet service is via Time Warner Cable. I currently get their WideBand service (50mbps down) bundled with basic cable and an VOIP phone I never use in a 12-month promotion. This costs me $118 p/mo. When that 12-month period was up I called to cancel stuff and they extended that promotion for another 12 months.

If I subscribed to just the internet service, it would cost me $95 p/mo and that's before the taxes and fees, so it would come to about the same I am paying now.

The only other player for internet service in my area is Clear 4G WiFi which is a joke when it comes to speed.

So basically, I'm stuck with cable for internet service, and through effective bundle pricing the missus can still watch Housewives of * on the big telly.

hieronymusN··on A better Hackerbuddy
I think this is a really cool idea, especially as I am a remote worker. However, why the focus on startup hackers? Why can't any coder/designer get involved regardless of their workplace? This would be great for freelancers and small agency employees as well.
hieronymusN··on Airport full-body X-ray scanners banned across Europe as unsafe
Well, they did do random bag checks at random subway stops for a while. It was always half-assed and you were not compelled to let them search your bag, you could just turn around and walk a few blocks to the next stop where they were not checking bags. It was all Security Theatre to make all of us here in NYC "feel safer" and let us know the NYPD was "on top of things". From a security standpoint it was absolutely pointless and people did get annoyed.
hieronymusN··on Airport full-body X-ray scanners banned across Europe as unsafe
The Continental Terminal in LaGuardia is still using metal detectors and the TSA personnel there tend to keep the line moving pretty quickly, considering its a serious bottleneck.
hieronymusN··on Airport full-body X-ray scanners banned across Europe as unsafe
I've seen this same scenario in play many times in different airports. In some larger airports (IAH) they only have 1 body scanner but way more volume than it can handle, so they will have two other lines going through standard metal detectors. I just stand in one of those lines and bypass the scanner. The last time I asked a TSA guy how to request a pat down and not go through the scanner he got visibly annoyed and started loudly proclaiming how safe the scanners were, its just an X-ray, yadda yadda.
hieronymusN··on The Yet Another Framework (Yaf), PHP extension for developing web applications
Since this is a PECL extension, and therefore compiled in C, I would love to see some performance information.
hieronymusN··on The Yet Another Framework (Yaf), PHP extension for developing web applications
Is the source for this anywhere like GitHub where it can be looked over?

EDIT: Appears to be on Google Code: http://code.google.com/p/yafphp/source/browse/

hieronymusN··on HP PC Boss: Shutting down of WebOS is “unfounded rumor”
I just switched from a 1st gen Palm Pre to my first iPhone 4S and I cannot agree more with this statement. webOS has a great UI, but it lost all the important battles (app ecosystem, quality hardware to run on, etc). iOS is now picking up a lot of webOS goodness (notifications) and the app ecosystem that Apple has is just... mindblowing. John Siracusa, in his Hypercritical podcast, made a great case for Amazon picking up webOS for use on their new tablets, but that horse has already left the stable with Android.
hieronymusN··on Google now tells you your IP when you ask it in search
I have IPv6 and IPv4 through my ISP (TimeWarner) - but I have to explicitly tell Google that I want an IPv6 connection with the subdomain.
hieronymusN··on Google now tells you your IP when you ask it in search
Wow, like the IPv6 anf IPv4 breakdown along with ISP information. Wolfram would win, but as usual you can't scrape it with the SED tricks of earlier posts... or can you?
hieronymusN··on Google now tells you your IP when you ask it in search
To force the IPv6 IP on Google - http://ipv6.google.com/search?q=what+is+my+ip
hieronymusN··on The Bitcoin Crypto-Currency Mystery Reopened
Is it me, or does this all start to read like a Neal Stephenson novel?
hieronymusN··on Markdown Editor for web developers, on Mac OS X
Thanks for this, I've been looking for a nice simple markdown editor that can kick out HTML for a while. I used to use TextMate's with it's Markdown preview, but since I stopped using TextMate I've needed something to fill that space. (Sublime Text 2 doesn't seem to have a preview feature)
hieronymusN··on Textmate 2 - Alpha this year

hieronymusN··on Game of Thrones CGI
I watched the season without knowing anything about the books and expected not to like it at all, as swords/sandals/fantasy isn't my thing. I was immediately hooked on the first episode and am now reading the first book.

To be honest though, I know I'm getting old as the level of non-sensical sex in the show put me off a bit.

Tyrion for the win.

hieronymusN··on JavaScript mp3 decoder allows Firefox to play mp3 without flash
Technical question: You're using goto in a do/while loop here :

https://github.com/nddrylliog/jsmad/blob/master/src/decoder....

How are you pulling this off? I ask because while goto is a reserved word in JavaScript I didn't think it did anything.

hieronymusN··on GitHub: Block the Bullies
That's a pretty lucid and well written account. I would like to know more about the connection between HackerNewsTips and Github though. Github employees have denied it here on HN.

I made this one with Calibre, and its optimized for the iPad. Let me know how it looks for you.

I agree - you can check a linked TOC version here http://bit.ly/lSLTVT

Facepalm - you're right, my regexes got a little too aggressive. I've reposted it with the formatting intact.

I also posted a version as PDF - again it has the linked TOC which makes it easier to navigate. The PDF isn't as nice as the HTML though.

hieronymusN··on "The Best of edw519" is now free. Reverse Happy Birthday
This is amazing stuff - thanks much!

I made a slightly more readable HTML version (with linked TOC and back links) here -> http://bit.ly/lSLTVT

This could be converted to an ePub I think, with the linked TOC. If this a problem let me know and I will take it down, or maybe you could post it on http://edweissman.com/53640595 to get the linked TOC?

hieronymusN··on Creator of "Dirty Jobs" Mike Rowe testifies to Congress
You don't have to be raised on a farm to learn this. I was born and raised in a very large city and learned a lot of this stuff by having to work around the house to earn my allowance (mowing the lawn, painting the house, changing the oil in lawnmower & cars, helping build a new deck, etc etc). I also learned basic construction skills, metal working and welding in gasp my undergraduate art classes. This came in very handy when I had to build the walls, kitchen and bathroom in my Brooklyn loft many years later.
hieronymusN··on Vico Editor (Mac text editor)
Very cool. Does it have the equivalent of a .vimrc file so I can modify the leader char and make it more like my MacVim setup?
hieronymusN··on Vico Editor (Mac text editor)
I've already made the switch to MacVim using Janus - https://github.com/carlhuda/janus but Vico could be interesting. The biggest win here, like with Sublime Text 2, is being able to split the window into panes, which is something I've wanted in TextMate for years. However, what I really want is to be able to open a different file in the other panes, not the same file I have open.

[edit] Okay just figured out how to open different files in split panes. It's a little non-intuitive (you have to select the pane and the use the Open Files drop down, and have that file open in another tab (?!)). Would be nice to be able to select that pane and then just click the file I want in there in the Explorer.

Would really like to have some integration with Git. I don't see the Git .tmbundle available in the list.

It would be nice to be able to bring over a lot of the features of Vim, or maybe you can and I don't see it.

Looks like it's scriptable with Nu - http://programming.nu/index - which I haven't heard of.

The symbol list on the right is also great, makes jumping to methods a breeze with nice animated highlighting. I'm really starting to dig this.

hieronymusN··on Workers Leaving the Googleplex
You're absolutely correct about sexual harassment. Many years ago I had a temp job filing records in the legal dept. of the American Medical Association. They had a large filing room chock full of settlement documentation against doctors for sexual harassment.
