hiddentao··on Simple web-based file sharing (beta)
I use http://ge.tt for this. No sign up needed, no upload size limit, and better yet - the other person can start downloading the file as soon as you start uploading. How is Dropr better?
hiddentao··on It’s a fucking startup. Why are you here?
Agreed. That's what I was thinking as I was reading through his diatribe. Asking me to live and breathe the job is all good but if I'm not getting to share in the rewards the same as you then you're really just asking me to be your slave and make you rich. I wonder what their compensation/equity structure is.

I agree with the points you've made. I was simply stating that I can see why some people are calling for him to step down. The person who leads the company - the CEO in most cases - is by default often considered to be a public face for said company and to also be a representation of the kind of company it is. I'm not saying that that's how it should be or not, just that's how it seems to be.

Here's an idea. What if Eich had donated to a cause which stated the idea that marriage could only be between two white people. Sounds nonsensical but what if instead of it being based around sexual orientation, it was based around race?

The idea of racial equality has been around a lot longer and is more generally accepted than gay marriage rights (which only recently have begun to gain wider acceptance) so I imagine more people would be on the “he should resign” side in such a case.

When I first heard about this issue I didn’t think it was a big deal as long as his personal views did not influence his professional behaviour and ethics. But as some people have pointed out, he is the public face of an organisation that touts openness and inclusiveness as values. Furthermore, if I was gay I’m sure I’d feel more strongly about this, in the same way that someone who is non-white (or in the marginalised race) would feel strongly if the issue was around race as I've described above.

Finally, to people calling for him to apologise….him coming out with an apology to pacify everyone wouldn’t mean that he has changed his mind. It could just mean him saying what he needs to say to be able to get on with things while still harbouring the same thoughts and ideas within. Ask any politician.

hiddentao··on New RFS – Breakthrough Technologies
Spot on. A VC will fund something really risky and innovative if and only if they think they'll likewise make a larger profit from it compared less risky ventures. But as pointed out by other commenters even this risk-taking is limited.

Ventures like SpaceX and Tesla that have a long lead time and (at least in these two cases) are loss-making at the start probably wouldn't get YC-VC funding. Or at least they wouldn't get anywhere near the level of funding they'd need to get to profitability point.

I wager that for some of the really big world-changing projects we simply have to be willing to fund it as long as necessary, taking an extremely long-term view. And for this, VC funding is probably not going to be enough. Both Tesla and SpaceX needed to take in public (read: Government) funding to keep going.

hiddentao··on Update on Julie Horvath's Departure
I'm guessing that at the time (whilst the issue was still internal) they didn't think what was happening was a big enough deal. As a result they're now having to perform damage control.
hiddentao··on Congratulations Graduate – Why I Will Never Hire You
One of the nice things about hiring for any software development team that develops open source projects is that you can often find great hires amongst the community of developers who are already contributing code and fixes and such to your projects. This way you already know the candidate is passionate about the work and thus don't need or expect them to lie to you about "wanting to work there their whole life".

This got me thinking...why don't more companies do this? if you run a design or PR firm surely there are some internal experimental/lab projects you could open up for outside contributors to join in with. I know that many companies already do this. But I'm wondering whether this sort of software-world inspired collaboration could be made more prevalent.

I am a full-stack web developer with 8+ years experience backed by a Computer Science degree.

Primary specialities:

  * Javascript - Node.js, Backbone, Ember, Angular
  * Page speed optimisation and mobile rendering
  * Continuous integration (I love setting up a build :)
Examples:

  * https://showca.se
  * http://www.syfy.co.uk
  * http://squeljs.org
In the past I've also developed extensively in PHP, Python and and Java and can work with them as and when needed. Going back even further I developed in C++ for the Symbian OS. I am able to quickly ramp up on new technologies and hit the ground running. I have worked with numerous clients in various industry sectors, ranging from a two-person climate change start-up all the way to a global media corporation. I can work with your team, lead your team or go solo depending on project requirements.

Originally from the UK, I am currently travelling around.

hiddentao··on Ask HN: What are you working on and why is it cool? (February 2014)
I'm building https://www.autonomail.com

User-friendly PGP encrypted email as a Chrome app. Open source. Will work with a proprietary mail protocol and eventually with standard IMAP servers too (building on previous work I did with https://github.com/hiddentao/browsermail). Pricing still to be worked out though am thinking of making it Cryptocoin-only.

hiddentao··on Ask HN: What email client do you use?
Seems like a lot of people like the Gmail interface.

hiddentao··on Javascript Cryptography Considered Harmful
Yes, delivering JS crypto over the pipes is dangerous. But surely, bundling the code as a browser extension (such that you download and install it once and from then on it's loading everything locally) mitigates most of the issues apart from the memory clearing and perhaps timing?

This is how Cryptocat (https://crypto.cat/) does it.

hiddentao··on Simple mobile-friendly online calculator in Javascript
Yeah, alert boxes aren't great I admit. I was aiming for the bare minimum of functionality but I could perhaps add nicer popups using script. It detects changes in browser window size and tries to redraw the button pad accordingly; and so should work well on mobile screens too though there are some width issues on iPod Touch.
