hi-v-rocknroll··on Why do systems fail? Tandem NonStop system and fault tolerance
Stanford's Forsythe DC had a Tandem mainframe just inside the main floor area. It was a short beast standing on its own about 1.5m / 4' tall, and not in a 19" rack.
hi-v-rocknroll··on In SSRI withdrawal, brain zaps go from overlooked symptom to center stage (2023)
Tapered on and off 16 medications over the past 20 years, including just about every SSRI, SNRI, and TCA. One dose of Paxil (paroxetine) was enough to give me "mild" serotonin syndrome hyperactivity, plus disassociation like it was ketamine or a hypnotic. Mirtazapine worked well for me for about 8 years, far better than any other medication. Then it gradually stopped working so well. Tried Viibryd (vilazodone), which lead to eye and leg twitching. Also tried tapering off mirtazapine a few times in extended time periods, but I was right back in severe, crushing, depression.

I think the lack of scientific, evidence-based examination and treatment pushed by MDs/DOs, therapists, and psychiatrists is a big part of the problem. There is not much in the way of nosology or real personalized medicine going on to understand specific root cause(s). It's just throw random medications and therapy approaches "spaghetti" against a wall and hope something sticks.

It's a worthy investment because it's not a retail throwaway item. Also, it comes with a business OPNsense license with 1 year of business updates. After that, it can either stay on that series, run the FOSS version, or one can purchase an S&S uplift later to get time period of additional business updates. Plus, the 2 10 GbE ports can do 10G switching more-or-less flat out (not necessarily over a WG or OpenVPN tunnel though). Until you get 20G internet for whatever reason, it's the last home/small business router you'll ever buy.

> ASUS B650E/X670E mainboard

No, no, no. Fuck ASUS and you don't understand the use-case.

I acquire gear through gray markets just fine because I'm not paying zillions for commercial channel parts. I can get a 1 port 400 GbE NIC for ~$1k USD. It maybe used or an engineering sample, but it works.

hi-v-rocknroll··on Should I Use My State's Digital Driver's License?
What happens when...

0. The police ask for ID, you provide it, and they search your now unlocked phone without your consent?

1. Your phone battery dies and you need to provide ID.

2. A perfect digital static copy of it is created, say from an inadvertent screenshot. Now there's a risk of having that get in the hands of someone else.

3. What if you need to give your ID to someone? Now you potentially have to give your phone to them.

4. How are counterfeit DDLs going to be policed? It seems like it makes making fake IDs trivial.

While going DDL only seems like A Good Idea(tm) in theory, it's probably best used as a backup to a physical card rather than the other way around.

hi-v-rocknroll··on Could we build a computer designed to last at least fifty years? (2021)
Don't use tantalum or electrolytic capacitors, lead-free solder, BGA-packaged ICs, exposed (non-stainless) steel, paper, or plastic, and most problems are mitigated by design. And use good halogen- and bromine-free fiberglass PCBs. There isn't anything to wear out or replace in such a properly-designed machine of modern design and manufacturing. If manufactured correctly, boards can be entirely encapsulated under an inert, dry atmosphere such that there won't be any moisture or oxygen to attack components over time. Basically, it would be able to last physically for centuries. The main sources of fragility would be the power supply and the permanent storage device such as an SSD or HDD. The former is generic enough to be trivial to retrofit. The latter could use SLC, RS/Turbo coding, and write minimization and buffering to extend the life beyond ordinary expected lifecycle.
hi-v-rocknroll··on Software spotlight: Cassette software for the IBM PC
Worse, it was sort-of (in)compatible with the PC just enough to be troublesome. 50 of these were donated to my high school because an elementary school couldn't use them and didn't want them, and my high school didn't want them but couldn't get rid of them because of donation contractual requirements.
hi-v-rocknroll··on AMD EPYC 9965 Delivers Better Performance/Power Efficiency vs AmpereOne 192-Core
Instead of buying 2 EPYC 4004 (4584PX) with marginally useless server features, I stuck 2 Ryzen 7000 (Ryzen 9 7950X3D) in uATX H13SAE-MF server boards with ECC RAM. They include IGPUs, but whatever. They work fine for load testing 100 and 400 GbE NICs.

hi-v-rocknroll··on Software spotlight: Cassette software for the IBM PC
Yep. I remember it for the PCjr but forgot about original PC support for it. PCjr's also supported ROM cartridges.

I think the core problem of the PCjr is it was trying to be all things to all people by being part PC, part low-end computer, and part gaming console.

Unfortunately, there are too many people now who believe they are liberal and tolerant but don't know what it means since they preach and practice exactly the opposite values. It's sad because they spit on gains of the sexual, gender, and cultural revolutions up until about the 1970's and instead behave like hypocritical, ignorant fascists similar to the ones who were worth resisting centuries previously. I think the core problems are a lack of mentors and lack of pushback from previous generations of academic and cultural thought leaders to say "that's absurd". Instead, academically weak and immature instructors in academia are inculcating subsequent generations with misguided and absurd ideas about as equally insane as the MAGA movement. The result expressed on the greater society is we now have these 2 extremist cults who are doppelgängers of each other who suck the oxygen out of public policy and discourse.
hi-v-rocknroll··on The Atlantic Did Me Dirty
Victimhood supremacy combined with provincial identity reinforcement discourages well-rounded education, liberal values, and dismisses classics as "old white patriarchy". The author fails to realize they are no longer a liberal nor that they are racist, sexist, and ageist.

That is the underlying thesis of their protest: old white man bad.

hi-v-rocknroll··on The Atlantic Did Me Dirty
It's a submarine story pushing the "lack of diversity patriarchy is to blame" trope.
hi-v-rocknroll··on Gavin Newsom Bans California from Requiring ID to Vote
Yep. And before ID requirements, it was the poll taxes. Like robbing a bank, the penalties for fraudulently voting are so extreme (52 USC 20511) that no sane person should dare to entertain it. As such, it's simpler and encourages exercising of voting rights to lower bureaucratic barriers now to figure out paperwork and credentials later.

Here's one option:

If I then said "it's me," that would be an obvious echo.

Or if I instead said "it's not me", that would a contrarian echo.

So I'm just going to say: it's probably not me, the last time I checked, but I'd be happy to be wrong.

There is probably no single "Satoshi" individual, but that was their avatar "API boundary" with which to interface with the rest of the world. It was probably a scheme to financialize fintech (with an emphasis on tech) by 2-4 people who then held large amounts of the value they printed, making them covert decabillionaires able to escape press, kidnapping, pitch schemes, and taxation.

Nope. It's a launchpad not meant solely to follow blindly. The point is trial and error experimentation along the way. Can I switch the order of these packages or enable dependency X?

It also helps to have a fast x86_64 box with zillions of cores and plenty of RAM and SSD, and also a compiler cache like sccache to speed up rebuilds.

While Nix/NixOS solved RPM dependency hell and side-by-side multiple concurrent version installation issues, it created its own problems.

The problem with Nix/NixOS is everything is too isolated to be configurable or usable, and so almost everything is broken because it doesn't work like any other OS. Chasing down all of the oddities and gotcha problems becomes a full-time IT job that slows everything else down, and then with a fragile special snowflake of patches and workarounds, it becomes very expensive and slow to do anything or to count on it being reliable. Furthermore, the syntax and nature of the packaging DSL is also too clever special snowflake that could've made do with declarative data or imperative procedural with something widespread like Python, Bourne shell, or JS to reduce the friction of customization and contribution.

Like Qubes, an over-optimization for particular goal(s) ends up becoming Achille's footguns because of a lack of compatibility and usability with everything else that came before.
