hhm··on Academic Hacker News
This is just fantastic, thank you!
hhm··on How We Kill Geniuses
Maybe the book is too long for the point she tries to make. I think we are starting to need a shorter format for this kind of books; some of these ideas can be really useful, but they couldn't ever fill an entire book (another example: Gladwell's books, which can have an interesting point -even if it's a conjecture-, but they are too long for the ideas they try to tell).
hhm··on Brains, Brains, Brains, Brains: different flavors of genius
Actually, for me, the most interesting thing about this article was the short comment about the high-school to college transition. The classification is very simplistic indeed.
hhm··on Microsoft Kills Flight Simulator, Fires Entire Dev Team
I guess the entire group could be hired by a company trying to build a competing product.
hhm··on How to Run a Meeting Like Google
I think some time ago, Microsoft used to have two different internal versions of Word, for example... the one which was better won, and was the one used by people.
hhm··on [dead]
Nope: http://www.snopes.com/college/exam/barometer.asp
hhm··on Coding Horror: The Problem of the Unfinished Game
The game-show version of the Monty Hall problem isn't ambiguous... people even had the chance to see the show before knowing the mathematical problem. I agree there are different ways to state the problem, but the wording doesn't explain why it confuses people.
hhm··on How To Be Creative
"Beware of turning hobbies into jobs"

Don't most hackers turn their hobbies into jobs? How does that work for you?

hhm··on Coding Horror: The Problem of the Unfinished Game
The correct answer is 2/3 though. Check the Monty Hall problem for the explanation (this kind of problem is well known for having confused famous mathematicians like Erdös himself).
hhm··on Cuil Fail: Traffic Nearly Hits Rock Bottom
It has its own crawler, it only uses Yahoo when it can give you good results.
hhm··on Moving to Argentina
You're welcome, enjoy your travel! :)
hhm··on Moving to Argentina
Visit http://palermovalley.com/ (the event is held once a month or two I believe)... it's useful for networking and full of entrepreneurs, developers and builders. The founders of Core, Popego, Sabarasa, etc. can be found there sometimes too.
hhm··on The nicest math book I own
Perhaps they give users the motivation to submit other interesting links like this one.
hhm··on My experience selling a draft novel on the Amazon Kindle
For paying or for receiving payments? You can buy from outside the US with any international credit card, like Visa, whatever your bank account is.
hhm··on My Job Interview at Google
Ok, a less elegant one then, but one that works for a reasonably simple reason. f gives 1 to 5, if it gives 5, try again, and so on, until you have a number from 1 to 4. Then, do that mod 2. You have a random binary digit, that's unbiased.

Now use that process to get 3 binary digits. You get a random number from 0 to 7. If the random number is 0, start again... eventually you'll get a number from 1 to 7, and all numbers have the same chances.

hhm··on My Job Interview at Google
You're right in that my original reasoning was wrong. Thank you for your comment.
hhm··on Ask HN: Is there a HN for music?
I like http://thefeelgood.com/
hhm··on My Job Interview at Google
Execute f 7 times, add all numbers, call that x. Then you do mod(x,7)+1, and you get a random number between 1 and 7. If the original function was unbiased, this one is going to be unbiased too.
hhm··on Ask YC: A tough problem - how do I pick African children for a tech scholarship?
Check Ramanujan's story please... he could have made use of this kind of scholarship (not in Africa, but anyway).
hhm··on Balsamiq hits $100,000 in revenue
Yes, I think the answer to the "too much mails" problem is opening a mailing list or forum. It works for medium to big projects, but for small ones I'm not sure it would be enough.
hhm··on Major Breakthrough: First Photos of Planets Around Other Stars
This one: http://worldwind.arc.nasa.gov/

Enjoy! It's really amazing

hhm··on Major Breakthrough: First Photos of Planets Around Other Stars
That already exists! There is a product by NASA that allows you to do that, I don't remember the name (you can see the moon, mars, mercury, etc).
hhm··on Loop Quantum Gravity predicts discrete, not continuous spacetime topology
I'm pretty sure that the singularity is not the fact that it's a point, but that the gravity is so high that it wraps in on itself. i.e. that spacetime has a hole in it.

I know Wikipedia isn't a good source for physics, but:

"While in a non-rotating black hole the singularity occurs at a single point in the model coordinates, called a "point singularity", in a rotating black hole, also known as a Kerr black hole, the singularity occurs on a ring (a circular line), defined as a "ring singularity". Such a singularity may also theoretically become a wormhole."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gravitational_singularity

It seems a singularity is either a point or a line, but never a sphere for example.

hhm··on Loop Quantum Gravity predicts discrete, not continuous spacetime topology
That's a problem for them I guess... we have empirical evidence of black holes. Maybe what's impossible is singularities? Some physicist to correct me?
hhm··on YouTube adds machine translation to videos with captions.
In the comments: "To use the auto-translate feature, you need to have the English subtitles/caption file uploaded to your YouTube video. "
hhm··on Secret message in source code of Digg
I think "Digg's HTML" would actually be wrong. HTML is a language, and the secret isn't hidden at the language but at a markup written in such language. Say the language is called X. Then we'd say: Digg's X markup. Why would it be different with X=HTML?

What I aggre though, is that "HTML markup" is redundant in a sense: something written in HTML is a markup, as HTML is a language for markups. So we'd rather say something more general like "HTML code" or "HTML text", as we don't need to specify markup again. But it isn't very important anyway.

hhm··on The dumbification of Spore
And this is interesting: http://forum.spore.com/jforum/posts/list/5225.page "Thoughts on Spore from an ex-Maxis intern."
hhm··on [dead]
Is this supposed to be fun!?
hhm··on Poll: Allow stories about the election?
Broadened? Start-ups and hacking are very different categories, and there is very little in the intersection. This site being for start-ups had too much material that wasn't interesting for hackers, and as the main target of the site was hackers anyway, the focus was put on hacking, maybe very near the intersection.
hhm··on Physics Invader = Space Invader + Physics
It's fun that I was downmodded for explaining exactly why this problem happens. I used to be a game developer, and believe me, that's the true reason behind the problem.
