hgh··on White House Executive Order on Cybersecurity
Biden administration specifies new cybersecurity requirements for federal software providers
hgh··on Decline in teen drug use continues, surprising experts
Perhaps? But a confounder is the strengthening or weakening of social ties. It's not clear that what seems to increasing loneliness is doing well by this next generation.
hgh··on Radiology-specific foundation model
Connecting your comment to another about commercial model, seems the potential win here is selling useful tools to radiologists that may leverage AI rather than to end customers with the idea to replace some radiology consultations.

This seems generally aligned with AI realities today: it won't necessarily replace whole job functions but it can increase productivity when applied thoughtfully.

hgh··on Amazon joins companies arguing US labor board is unconstitutional
These seems to dovetail with an existing case involving the SEC and it's authority that is under review by the Supreme Court:

hgh··on “I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid that computation is too carbon intensive”
The mechanism that can shift supply to less polluting sources of electricity and shape demand for computation/electricity is pricing.

Measurement, pricing and reducing pollution externalities is a major challenge, but I don't think that's as unknown of a problem as the article seems to suggest.

hgh··on Linux Hits All-Time High of 3% of Desktop PC Share After 30 Years
Timely but I dare ask: I need to rework my thinkpad, still in good shape but with an older ubuntu distro. Reasonably fluent linux user but not expert, primarily dev workflows - what's the recommendation?
hgh··on Ask HN: What are your favorite methodologies for organizing digital life
Start with goals. “With all this stuff I hope…” or think what you hope to be true in three years. Work back from that. The default (which is great if you like) is I’d like to spend a lot of time shuffling digital resources.
hgh··on Bard is getting better at logic and reasoning
One nice improvement is applying a constraint. Bard will now give a valid answer for "give a swim workout for 3000m" that correctly totals 3k, while chatgpt does not.
hgh··on Have lots of AWS accounts
AWS gets many things more right, but I think GCP wins on how they handle Projects and Managed Instance Groups for auto-scaling.
hgh··on Climate change: Six tipping points ‘likely’ to be crossed
A well done (gated) recent FT article on the boreal forest that also speaks to decreased scientific collaboration post-Ukraine war: https://www.ft.com/content/e59c800f-3704-4504-91b0-06e583d9c...
hgh··on LaMDA is not sentient
>> That whereof we cannot speak, thereof we must remain silent

The debate intensity seems inversely correlated to the precision of the terms. Scrolling through the thread and the related articles, I don't see any clear (and ideally falsifiable) definition of sentience. It's a general concept, but it's not worth haggling about.

hgh··on Ask HN: How to raise funds for rare disease research?
We had a scare around Cystic Fibrosis. I admire your courage and compassion - my best to you and your family.

The story of how CF treatments developed (Trikafta) is remarkable. KS seems much rarer than CF, but I recommend studying how the CF Foundation evolved. https://www.cff.org/about-us/our-history

There are lots of good suggestions in the thread. It seems you're already doing this, but I recommend connecting with people (e.g. families of those with KS, medical professionals with an interest, marketing volunteers, ...) and keeping in touch. This can help create momentum behind a movement, leverage networks, and mutual support/encouragement. We also very much appreciated connecting with others affected by CF during that time.

hgh··on Papers We Love
I think the original DynamoDB paper is a good choice - some interesting CS/systems engineering content but relatively accessible.

hgh··on What is protein folding? A brief explanation
I enjoyed The Gene by Siddhartha Mukherjee. Depending on what you're looking for it might be relatively light on the science side and includes autobiographical digressions, but overall gives a high-level overview of key developments in the field.

hgh··on How to Learn Advanced Mathematics Without Heading to University – Part 3
Could you explain the principle in terms a 5-year old would understand?
hgh··on What Great Listeners Actually Do
To follow on from your excellent second point - "actually be involved in the conversation"

People understandably don't appreciate if you're parroting back to them what they said (even paraphrased) so that you can appear to be an "active listener".

The reason to repeat what someone said exactly (useful in case you legitimately just missed an important phrase) or paraphrase is because you didn't fully understand what they said and you genuinely want to understand the point. Asking follow-up questions to drive discovery and enjoyment is next.

Being a good listener is about being humble, respectful and present. Turns out that's easier said than done.

hgh··on The Age of Absurdity: Why Modern Life Makes It Hard to Be Happy (2010)
Is that true?

Take a look at e.g. https://stats.oecd.org/Index.aspx?DataSetCode=ANHRS#. In most places, people are working less hours, and they have significantly higher standards of living in many ways.

Especially in software development, there are enormous opportunities to work however you like for as many hours as you like. Sure, if you want a mid six-figure salary and try to keep up with the Jones' in SF you'll need to sacrifice some leisure and relationships, but that's not universally true. If your preference is to enjoy meaningful relationships and leisure time outside of work, and you have STEM skills, this is a great time to be alive.

hgh··on Ways to get motivated when you don’t feel like working
Hemingway agrees:

"I had learned already never to empty the well of my writing, but always to stop when there was still something there in the deep part of the well, and let it refill at night from the springs that fed it." -A Moveable Feast

hgh··on Today I accept that Rails is yesterday’s software
From Stroustrup of C++ fame: There are only two kinds of languages [frameworks]: the ones people complain about and the ones nobody uses.
hgh··on This Is Your Brain on Podcasts
Nice, missed that. Thanks!
hgh··on This Is Your Brain on Podcasts
Article itself is pretty light on the details, but good opportunity to ask the HN community -- which podcasts really fire your neurons?
hgh··on English Syntax Highlighting
If you try to read all the words, just faster, you won't get much farther. The trick is to take a more active approach and optimize how you spend your time towards the goal of comprehension.

One thing that worked well for me was shifting from "reading" to "interrogating". Don't just try to read through a text, think carefully (and jot down) what questions you need to answer from the text, and jump around the text as necessary to answer the questions. If you don't have a sense of what questions to ask, do a quick skim of the text and any other relevant material to get the questions first, then dive in. Iterate and refine your questions and answers.

hgh··on China's Subprime Crisis Is Here
Michael Pettis is one my favourite China commentators, with a big focus on the shifts necessary in the balance sheet and composition of growth, and whether that can be done smoothly or necessarily through some catastrophe. Not to mention a broader view of the political economy of the change.

Here's a recent post he did that's worth a read (at least through the nine point summary): http://blog.mpettis.com/2016/01/will-chinas-new-supply-side-...

hgh··on When Are You Really an Adult?
Well said. A mentor of mine once told that to be a child is to be dependent, to be an adolescent is to reach for independence, and then to be an adult is to recognize our interdependence.
hgh··on Novelist warns against utilitarian trends in higher education
There is definitely still room on liberal arts side of most engineering degrees regardless the institution.

In my engineering degree (University of Toronto), we had about 4 free electives and humanities courses over the whole degree. I believe there would have been a lot more value in having more free electives whereby students could take more courses in the humanities (or for those not so inclined, whatever other topics that interested them).

hgh··on Maxwell’s Unification Revolution
You might have come across them before, but the Feynman Lectures are a wonderful tour of undergrad-level physics, which combines the math with intuitive narratives. And it's now online: http://www.feynmanlectures.caltech.edu/
