Facebook, or Twitter, or…

Twitter shows clearly editorialised content in the trending sidebar.

hgazx··on Facebook's TikTok-like redesign marks sunset of social networking era
The day meta is declared dead will be the day some other corporation has released an alternative to Facebook/Instagram/etc, probably worse. Hardly anything to celebrate. The cat is out of the bag.
hgazx··on Amazon to raise Prime prices in Europe as retailer wrestles with costs
Yes, must be that everybody is just surfing on the inflation wave.
hgazx··on CosmicStrand: The discovery of a sophisticated UEFI firmware rootkit
What systems are those? Windows doesn’t allow you to do that by default unless you’re an admin.
hgazx··on Don’t Blame Dostoyevsky
>I understand why people hate all things Russian right now.

Bigotry?

hgazx··on The Dangers of Microsoft Pluton
I didn’t say anything about single player games.
hgazx··on VRchat bans mods, embraces EAC
Until you get a Lua unlocker. Because those limits are enforced by the client, not the server.

I’m not arguing that there’s no rate limiting going on in the server, but some things such as not being able to call several api commands with only one hardware event are enforced client side because by definition the server has no idea about whether a hardware event happened.

I know that this is a popular take here, which is why I proposed that there should be a mechanism to opt out. But that would mean that you would have to play against those who opted out as well.

Regardless, I think that the pc platform deserves a good anti cheat solution.

Separating the groups of those who have a good anti cheat system enabled (such as this) and those who don’t is a good compromise for everybody. I think more reasonable companies such as Valve will go that way.

hgazx··on Likely cause of mystery child hepatitis outbreak found
I fail to see the good intentions behind not letting you go outside.

Oh, thanks!
hgazx··on Proletarian Revolution in the Global North Is Impossible
Disgusting communist rhetoric openly posted to HN.

The other day I finished reading Amusing Ourselves to Death and I wondered what a similar book about the age of social media would’ve said.

This crashed the safari tab on my iPhone, lol.
hgazx··on Male ‘biological clock’ can affect chances of birth more than was thought
Donor sperm is a good option if you don’t mind raising a child that’s not yours.

When I was a kid I had a sound editing application (think of something like audacity) and it had a tool to generate white noise. I was deathly afraid of generating white noise and then slowing it down because I thought that I may find hidden messages.
hgazx··on A chess robot in Moscow has broken the finger of its human opponent
That’ll teach you, nerd.
hgazx··on Spain will introduce free train travel
The party is called the socialist worker party, so we call them socialists.
hgazx··on Spain will introduce free train travel
Spain is completely broke as it is. The amount of money the socialists of this country waste is astonishing.

Not watching the telly.
hgazx··on Half of Americans anticipate a U.S. civil war soon
I’m not American but I can see how many things have simply gone too far these past years.
hgazx··on Hetzner to Offer First Arm-Based Dedicated Servers in Europe
I had one of these. Performance was atrocious and they were generally unreliable.
hgazx··on EU Digital Markets Act, aimed at Google, Apple, Amazon, approved
Personally I keep a different persona in all those messengers and they are all different in the way that they work and the features that they offer. I’m happy compartmentalising things. Not to mention the spam problem that will likely occur.
hgazx··on EU Digital Markets Act, aimed at Google, Apple, Amazon, approved
This is going to be bad. Regarding the iPhone:

It will open the door to apps asking me to install their own stores to access them. That will be inconvenient.

It will open the door to apps charging me through methods other than Apple’s subscriptions. That will make it harder for me to cancel.

It will open the door to malware on the phones of my less technologically capable relatives.

On the other hand I will be able to install pirated Spotify and YouTube much easily. I currently have to use AltStore, which is somewhat annoying.

I’m not even going to comment on interoperability between messengers. It’s simply absurd, no matter the way I look at it.

hgazx··on Facebook Accused of ‘Whitewashing’ India Human Rights Report
Honest question and I’m not Indian. If millions of regular Indians don’t want Muslims, what gives?

hgazx··on Rowan Atkinson: Visual Comedy (1992) [video]
The bbc costs everybody money. Asking for it to disappear is reasonable.
hgazx··on Does “Autostart” Mean “Autostart”?
I don’t come to hn to read articles.
hgazx··on Does “Autostart” Mean “Autostart”?
In 7 (I think) an option was added to task manager to temporarily disable or enable autostart entries. I suppose that this is how it is implemented?
