hfsktr··on Ask HN: What are the best personal project websites you've seen?
I browse all sites with javascript disabled by default. I didn't know what to expect in this thread as I'm not a designer and hold none of those skills. I thought maybe the sites would be more about the content of the project than the design.
hfsktr··on Ask HN: What are the best personal project websites you've seen?
I didn't see what was so special. You will need to enable javascript if you have that disabled. [Edit: with javascript it's cool the first time but if I want to read an article I don't need the animation every time...]

I only read one article but it was really well written and presented.

[re-edit] I was not being dismissive or negative. Since I didn't have JS enabled I didn't know I was missing anything. This site (unlike many) was functional without JS (which is what should happen IMO). Only after a second look did I think to enable JS to see there was more to it.

hfsktr··on Iceland, a land of Vikings, braces for a Pirate Party takeover
Since you said flights were so cheap I got a bit curious and did a search for a 7 day trip (admittedly from the airport near, which is small). I was not expecting the drastic difference in prices there though.

Some of those flights are ridiculously cheap though so you were right.

hfsktr··on 'Black Mirror' Is Back, Reflecting Our Technological Fears
I am curious if the same things are uncomfortable for everyone. Some of the episodes I disliked the most didn't even have the most gruesome things but seemed to be just a couple of logical leaps from real events.
hfsktr··on 'Black Mirror' Is Back, Reflecting Our Technological Fears
Definitely do. There are only a couple that are just wholly unbelievable but when you look around you can kind of see how certain people do act the way the show presents. Each episode being a stand alone story is also very nice since if you don't like one the next isn't the same thing (for the most part).
hfsktr··on UK Government proposes porn-viewing ID
But do they have a record of the reason you disabled it or did they just change a flag and lump you in with everyone else?

A bit more paranoid. If they do this tracking for porn, maybe in the future they add other types of content they want to track. I know it sounds silly but it's not like the data is going to go away and likely will only ever increase the amount of tracking. Sadly I know many people who see no issue with this.

hfsktr··on The Technical Interview Rift
I don't mind coding but I hate the other tasks that come with it (hardware, networking things, loads of setup). When it's part of my job sure but if I am programming instead of doing something else. I have not thought of a project that I can get so motivated about that I am willing to give up the little time I get to myself to work for free (obviously I am not going to strike it rich with my cheesy side project).

Also 99.9% of the tasks I wish to do are solved so it's not like I'm going to make my life easier by solving the task. For the few that I find that I want I understand they require extraordinary resources/programming skill that I just don't possess.

hfsktr··on A Basic Income Should Be the Next Big Thing
I agree with this. Then there would be no need for a new tax right?
hfsktr··on A Basic Income Should Be the Next Big Thing
Why is the new tax needed? What are we trying to fund that other taxes don't already cover? Don't we (the government) subsidize HFCS? Wouldn't not doing that raise the prices and not require a tax then?

I will oppose a 'sugar' tax because I don't think the government should be deciding what foods I consume, especially when I think taxes should be for raising money.

I am aware it's not the full picture and I haven't explained it well but I hope I got a little bit of my view across.

hfsktr··on Toddlers Kill More People in the USA (with guns) Than Terrorists Do
Your first two links are the same but your description for each is a bit different.

Somewhat related to that.

I assume this is the same episode everyone was talking about but it's the Snowden one and the street interviews are pretty sad (as they always are).

hfsktr··on What is Color Banding? And what is it not?
When I tried it in IE I got loads of popups about SSL/certificate stuff that I just don't get. So it probably is work messing it up. I will hopefully get a chance when I get home to revisit the page.

To the others, I did disable ublock and ghostery but that didn't do anything for me.

hfsktr··on What is Color Banding? And what is it not?
Every image on the page is broken for me (Chrome if it matters). I was hoping they would help understand what I was reading. Console is full of errors for where each image tried to load.
hfsktr··on TPP Text Confirms Massive Loss to Canadian Public Domain
Do you think I'm being paranoid if I thought that the author/copyright holder would suddenly have an "accident" if their death meant it would end the copyright?
hfsktr··on Case study: Can retailers win back shoppers who browse then buy online?
I can think of a few things that you just need to see or feel.

I was shopping for a monitor and all the reviews on Amazon are great but I can't see the difference on my current monitor or what it actually looks like despite all the specs listed.

I did buy it on Amazon but only after I saw the actual differences in store.

hfsktr··on CSS vs. SVG: Styling Checkboxes and Radio Buttons
I thought this was interesting and have done a little bit with custom checkboxes. I am the last guy to ask about design and UX so I am curious if it's frowned upon or if it sets a site apart.

hfsktr··on 1.5 TB of Dark Net Market scrapes
Some of the quotes are from before I was even born so that is just one of the references I don't know and just assumed it was a date thrown out for no reason.
hfsktr··on 1.5 TB of Dark Net Market scrapes
Some of them a bit less clairvoyant about the future:

"The actual date for the end of the world is July 5, 1998. ☯92NOV"

It is interesting how many were accurate or onto something. I just didn't expect it.

edit: Found this gem after wasting more time that I cared to.

"I think the future of personal communications holds great things in store for us, but privacy won't be one those things. ☯94AUG"

hfsktr··on Rare system of five stars discovered
Awesome thanks. I figured that you didn't actually need to view the full orbit and needed just a few points but for things so far away I thought that it would look practically stationary. Didn't even consider atmosphere...or that there were other factors. Of all the stuff that can be learned it probably isn't high on the list anyways.
hfsktr··on Rare system of five stars discovered
I have a question that a simple search didn't answer. Do astronomers actually measure the time it takes a star/planet/whatever to orbit? Or is it simply not possible for things after a certain distance?

For example how did they figure out that Pluto takes 247 Earth years per orbit? In our solar system I imagine they could measure it since it's close enough or see it in real time but even Pluto wasn't known for 248 years to see it go around.

With so many objects being so far away I thought it wouldn't really look like it moved from our perspective.

Email: top of resume

I am looking to get to the UK, and that is not an easy thing since I'd need a visa. I am willing to shuffle around to get there (eg work at local office and transfer over). I am more than willing to answer any questions or speak to specifics. Just email to get the ball rolling.

hfsktr··on Unreal Engine 4 shots that are unbelievably realistic
This was the video I meant. I agree it looks good but not real. Kind of strange that something can be both when I was expecting it to look real, if that made sense.
hfsktr··on Unreal Engine 4 shots that are unbelievably realistic
The still images were really impressive (to a layman like me the bar is pretty low but the comments indicate this too). When I watched the video though it broke the realness...not sure how to describe it but everything seemed 'too still' or something. Mostly with the water. Not like it's less impressive or anything but I was hoping it would feel like the images or something.
hfsktr··on How American Fans Pirated Japanese Cartoons into Careers
I didn't realize they put the playlist on youtube. Strange that it appears to be one episode behind.

http://teamfourstar.com/

You are right though. It's hilarious and somehow still follows the plot pretty well.

hfsktr··on Color vision quiz
17-20 depending on the colors. A lot of them were immediate but the dark blue/purples were difficult.

Was it just me or were all of them lighter? Were there any where the color was darker than the rest?

Just curious if that makes it more/less difficult or has any effect.

Squinting did help occasionally. As well as going with your gut usually. Fun way to spend a few minutes.

Edit: Sadly I couldn't score less than 1 since clicking the wrong color doesn't start it.

hfsktr··on The Netflix Website Gets a Major Upgrade
Can't wait to see it in action. I didn't care much for the site as it was. My biggest pet peeve was the difference between dvd/streaming interfaces. The DVD version would let you click to advance but the streaming list would only advance while hovering.

Second biggest is they don't have, last I saw, an easy way to see if a movie is now available on streaming when it's on the dvd list.

Maybe I misunderstood how it worked (is there a better way!) but it scrolled too slow for me. I usually wait a month to see if anything is new because of how infrequently they get new movies[0].

[0] streaming seems to be almost all tv shows now and they have those getting on the 'new' list constantly.

On that front...how come FOX/WB/etc don't compete and take those views? Last time I checked FOX only had the last 5 episodes when I really needed the a full season to catch up. Making me go somewhere else for their own content just seems weird.

hfsktr··on Global airlines to reduce size of carry-on bags
The first thing that came to mind was that it's an offense to open mail but really it seems like it's just stealing either way so that's probably not the big deterrent.

Maybe there are more restrictions/logging that prevents mail from getting lost. I would find that a bit weird (that USPS would be more secure) but I somehow doubt it's because postal workers are just more honorable.

hfsktr··on Ask HN: Software developers, What happened when you were fired/laid off?
Company I was with folded in 2012 and I didn't get a new job until just over a year later.

We knew the company was doing bad (other departments got laid off first, people jumping ship) but it was just a regular weekday (I think it was a Wednesday) and I'd come back from lunch and found out they told everyone to pack up and they'd speak to us before we left. the owner said a few words. Sat on unemployment filling out applications until I got the job I'm in now.

It was really depressing and felt a bit hopeless. Barely paying the bills and lots of jobs just out a reach (no savings so moving would have been in my mind impossible).
