heyoni··on Flappy Bird for Android, only C, under 100KB
What was their reasoning?
heyoni··on Forget ChatGPT: why researchers now run small AIs on their laptops
Isn’t there also some Firefox AI integration that’s being tested by one dev out there? I forgot the name and wonder if it got any traction.
heyoni··on iPhone 16's A18 Pro chip outperforms the M1 chip
And what your phone can’t do will be offloaded to servers. Meaning your phone can do a lot and an M1 processor isn’t necessarily a waste.
heyoni··on iPhone 16's A18 Pro chip outperforms the M1 chip
It doesn’t need to be a desktop. The point is they make their phones overpowered because nighttime operations while on a charger need that extra juice.
heyoni··on iPhone 16's A18 Pro chip outperforms the M1 chip
Think of all the accessories they could sell though to make that work! God knows Apple loves to sell accessories and marks them up quite high.
heyoni··on iPhone 16's A18 Pro chip outperforms the M1 chip
Also by downloading Firefox which comes with a safari plugin
heyoni··on iPhone 16's A18 Pro chip outperforms the M1 chip
It almost definitely does and probably always runs at a fraction of that speed while using up the battery. Even current gen phones don’t do face recognition unless you’re connected to a charger.
heyoni··on iPhone 16's A18 Pro chip outperforms the M1 chip
Except what would have been a Mac mini plugged into your router is now handheld and way less janky than needing the user to maintain two separate devices.
heyoni··on The YIMBYs Won over the Democrats
A word
heyoni··on Online platforms ‘can’t just sit on their hands’ – Reddit’s Steve Huffman
Yea but I can tell you based on experience that there’s definitely that top tier of people who care about this stuff and comment very thoughtfully that has disappeared from the platform. I routinely see wrong answers or just bad comments bubble up to the top of a thread.
heyoni··on Fluoride at twice the recommended limit is linked to lower IQ in kids
OP isn’t arguing about volume. Of course there’s more food today, and it probably is thanks to cheap processed foods that we can have so much of it. But in solving scarcity we invented new problems.
heyoni··on Fluoride at twice the recommended limit is linked to lower IQ in kids
You can’t overturn that argument with a one dimensional quip about fortified foods not existing. Imagine a diet with less sugar, more whole foods _and_ fortification?
heyoni··on Go structs are copied on assignment (and other things about Go I'd missed)
The language spec was so good I was able to make tangible contributions to an open source project just by using that and I don’t consider myself a go programmer at all. I want to buy that book but it’s technical and I feel like there might be a second edition around the corner?

/edit I bought it after reading this thread: https://groups.google.com/g/golang-nuts/c/U99js3UYz-U

heyoni··on CrowdStrike accepting the PwnieAwards for "most epic fail" at defcon
What a shallow dismissal of a comment that doesn’t even claim that there shouldn’t be accountability.
heyoni··on AI-Driven Drone Surveillance Is Leading to Home Insurance Cancellations
The article says they’re also using low flying planes and balloons to do the surveys.
heyoni··on LibreCUDA – Launch CUDA code on Nvidia GPUs without the proprietary runtime
Like anything open source it allows you to know and see exactly what your machine is doing. I don’t want to speculate too much but I remember there being discussions around whether or not nvidia could embed licensing checks and such at the firmware level.
heyoni··on Breakthrough a step toward revealing hidden structure of prime numbers
That is both impressive and disappointing. I'm so used to seeing large corporations publishing AI models and other techniques (like Ghidra) that I assumed a finding like that would be disseminated to the public. But you're right, something that could be used to decrypt modern ciphers could very well be kept secret for as long as possible.
heyoni··on Breakthrough a step toward revealing hidden structure of prime numbers
Wouldn’t it likely originate from academia? If so you can bet that the work will be published just like this one.
heyoni··on Apple releases first preview of its long-awaited iPhone AI
It’s become a liability.

Hey siri, turn on the AC!

Proceeds to call someone I’ve been texting whose name sounds nothing like anything in that phrase.

heyoni··on Apple Maps on the web launches in beta
If they cared about privacy they could have easily hosted the data encrypted with a key only known to the user rendering subpoenas useless for that service.
heyoni··on Apple Maps on the web launches in beta
Oh I totally agree. In fact I think it should be prioritized.
heyoni··on Apple Maps on the web launches in beta
That change is hilarious. So many potentially goofy reasons for it happening but my best take is google deciding not to host any data it can’t mine or use. The privacy policy on location history was quite good and effectively granted users privacy.
heyoni··on Apple Maps on the web launches in beta
I always thought it was to make more room for businesses and other useless information that crowds google maps these days.
heyoni··on Python Has Too Many Package Managers
I think the company that makes UV hired the guy that created ripgrep so no wonder it’s so fast (burntsushi i think is his alias)
heyoni··on Python toolkit for quantitative finance
The pointless act of "encapsulating" nothing? I see that a lot unfortunately =[
heyoni··on Supreme Court blocks controversial Purdue Pharma opioid settlement
All of those things take you away from their platforms. They don't want you to leave, period.
heyoni··on Being laid off and unplanned entrepreneurship
Those aren’t mutual exclusive. In fact having healthcare not be gated to the single few that can afford it might accelerate the process of fixing the issues around pricing.
heyoni··on Being laid off and unplanned entrepreneurship
Is that universal healthcare with extra steps? Almost, but on a serious note, why not go all the way with universality?
heyoni··on HN-text: an easy-to-use, text-first Hacker News terminal client
Can you do this with every website in the world?? I’m kidding of course but man, it pains me to browse the web as it is today knowing that things could be “this good”.

I just tried it and it was an amazing experience.

heyoni··on iTerm2 and AI Hype Overload
We litigated that? =)
