heynowheynow··on You come across bears. Your next move is important. Do you know what to do?
There is genetic evidence of grizzlies acquiring polar genes over the eons likely due to glacial advances and retreats altering habitats and cutting-off populations temporarily.

heynowheynow··on You come across bears. Your next move is important. Do you know what to do?
Family lived in a suburban area with black bear. They appeared to sometimes challenge us for territory as they would leave scat in the center of the front lawn. Bear scat is unmistakable.

When they're too comfortable around humans, it's a dangerous situation and unfortunately requires open carrying a .357 or 5.7 outside. Animal control won't relocate them until they cause a problem. If someone won't defend their family's or their own life, that's their responsibility and lack of preparedness.

heynowheynow··on I miss the old internet. The beautiful people are in charge
I miss Netscape on Windows 3.1 on a 4:3 CRT monitor in 256 colors with red on yellow Comic Sans bold italic H1 blink tag marquee with an unnecessary trail of ellipses scrolling left to right with 3 iframes with Java and Flash applets with a redirect to goatse.

But seriously, I miss Pythonline, gopher, finger, IRC, and sunsite.

heynowheynow··on Gender-Based Pricing in Consumer Packaged Goods: A Pink Tax?
Ignore genderedness when shopping and save money. I bought oversized women's snowpants for $18 discontinued vs. $210 in men's. It wasn't a tough decision. They weren't designed gendered being beige and baggy. If "girl colors" or "boy colors" bothers someone, there's always dye and paint.

If women's razors cost more than men's or generics, the rational decision is to skip pink.

heynowheynow··on I *detest* the crazy industry politics that made ECC memory so “special”
Largely ignorant buyers of mass-market, commodified devices lead to intense cost wars that shed features that aren't "essential." If a buyer wants ECC in a laptop or desktop, typically they have to purchase a workstation-class machine that costs 4-5x of low-budget models.

Memory issues can be caused by the PSU, motherboard, the CPU, or the memory itself. Personally, I always run memtest86 and memtest86+ for 2 days on any new components.

Out-of-date but pertinent: https://cr.yp.to/hardware/ecc.html (c. 1999-2006)

Other risks: https://defcon.org/images/defcon-21/dc-21-presentations/Schu...

The mitigation of bitsquatting requires ECC in network gear also. Furthermore, ECC isn't just about the memory type but having integrity in data buses, caches, storage, and network protocols also.

Home system is 96 thread, 512 GiB (16 x 32GB ECC Registered DDR4-3200), numerous SSDs and HDDs running RAID.

Seriously. Claim Elvis, Madonna, and Oprah visited. And it has indescribable cleansing properties. Wellness is the easiest place to make money because it's selling sweet little lies people want to hear.
heynowheynow··on Do McKinsey and other consultants do anything useful?
We're all "shoveling coal" and "put on our pants one leg at a time."

Pedigree gets noticed as a social and business scarcity signal, and ease of opportunities and expectations ensue. "It must be good if it says 'Mercedes'!" (just don't check the used car ratings for that model not built in Germany)

What I noticed was pedigree dulling or "overload" amongst high performance individuals from relative overachievement backgrounds like EE/CS and MD IITians + Ivies. At that point, they're "Mike", "Bob", "Venkatash" and the titles and diplomas are hiding in the corner somewhere. The ideas and work were central over an antithesis like: "How can you help my personal-professional brand get another book deal, startup funding round, and TED talk?". One time, a new software development manager came in and drove 5 developers into resigning by trying to micromanage and impose ", Ph.D." authority (a type who belongs MENSA and brags about it) on them. Sigh

The smartest successful people I've known are/were decent people. The latter might have something to do with it. I've seen enough gloriously cocksure, arrogant individuals set themselves up for hubris like Theranos.

heynowheynow··on Do McKinsey and other consultants do anything useful?
Sadly, yes.

There are managers who refuse to listen to their own people. This is where MBB consultants come in: talk to everyone, listen, and deliver fancy brochure-level template presentations with data and input from their own employees. It's the same or variations of recommendations that are listened-to because they cost more.

Also, an ignorant of the politics and business generalist business expert can more easily notice if there is anything amiss by entering as a novice with fewer vested interests.

heynowheynow··on UK Engineers raise concerns over proposed switch to imperial measurements
India wants to know if they should ask Pakistan to get the band back together. Also, returning to fractional sovereigns, pounds, crowns, guineas, florins, shillings, pennies, and farthings would be extremely simple.

(It's the sad and cynical exploitation of tribal, nativist nationalism containing aggressive, neofascist, pining-for-the-past-more-than-usual, and anti-intellectual sentiments.)

heynowheynow··on UK Engineers raise concerns over proposed switch to imperial measurements
It's pining for the fjords or maybe it's just stunned.
heynowheynow··on UK Engineers raise concerns over proposed switch to imperial measurements
There is an entire category of fallacies of distraction. People, especially those of the political persuasion, use them when they don't have valid or just arguments to support their position.

Personally, I prefer goat brains, monkey testicles, and the shrunken heads of vanquished enemies.

heynowheynow··on Crystal Programming Language
Pony does stricter sharing semantics than Rust (multicore) with actors and allegedly one of the fastest GCs ever developed. Its community is even smaller than Crystal's. Pony was developed essentially as a PoC to demonstrate the GC.
heynowheynow··on Crystal Programming Language
This is the same problem with Ruby, Python. or any interpreted language.

What most LSPs do is approximate it rather than worry about perfection and deliver nothing.

heynowheynow··on Crystal Programming Language
I also tried it now and then. There are too many places to have concurrency and scaling issues with such a tiny community. The packages and feature sets are thin too.

Alternatives: if you don't mind your eyes bleeding with C++-verbosity and tracking liveness yourself, there's Rust. Sure Go looks cute until you have a million users emailing you trivial questions they should've asked a group.

And if you want something similar to Crystal but with even stricter and more granular semantics than Rust with an even smaller community. there's Pony. It was built around the Orca GC. There's Nim too. Finally, one can use Haskell to built that critical payment service and maintain absolute job security. Meanwhile, the Erlang/Elixir OTP stack stays performant, although no one is quite sure how to package, deploy, and manage its lifecycle properly.

heynowheynow··on Most People Are Not Prepared for the Extent of the Energy Crisis
Climate change emergency being played out around the world as storms, fires, and famines enters the chat. In terms of priorities: shelter, food, and water are more important than having a tiny shop with large utility bills. Pakistan, India, Somalia, Ethiopia, and so on are dealing right now with life-and-death consequences of using the sky as a sewer.
heynowheynow··on I hacked my car

heynowheynow··on John Carmack: Best Programming Setup and IDE – Lex Fridman Podcast Clips
VSCode is based on Electron, a glorified hack/resource hog of Chromium than even Github largely abandoned. It maybe "great" and mildly "popular" here and there, but it's built on a foundation of mud. Build native apps that work and are performant.

With enough effort and care, a frictionless experience can be made with a TUI should some "Jetbrains" come along and try to make a commercial product out of it.

heynowheynow··on John Carmack: Best Programming Setup and IDE – Lex Fridman Podcast Clips
Has only a hammer and looking for nails.

What takes appreciation is the differences between a DOS game executable and a modern hyperscale backend app server fleet. gdb-server ain't going to solve many problems on 500k boxes.

I estimate 4.5 human-years of effort (1.5 years nonstop).
heynowheynow··on It’s time to leave the leap second in the past
Never gonna happen because there are competing vital interests:

0. Human diurnal local time

1. Universal time similar to 0. but without local offsets - UTC (UT1)

2. Universal monotonic time (within comparable gravitational reference zones) - TAI

These already exist. There is nothing to add or remove, but to do things differently that have already been recommended rather than sticking with insane traditions for another 25 years wherever possible. UTC (UTn), GMT, are insane for timestampping.

Use TAI essentially everywhere and calculate it later as UT1 or local time. If you fail to do so, you risk discontinuities and security vulnerabilities. This is why you should and must use TAI64[N[A]] rather than UTC because UTC is not monotonic. You can get UT1 from TAI by downloading LS tables and doing the math yourself. It is rare to find UTC-centric code implemented correctly.

This isn't rocket science, it's first principles of recording data that doesn't vary nondeterministically in forward time.

heynowheynow··on Inflation is crushing rural America and may even drive people to the cities
You've been to Austin? How dare you not say "hello" and yet notice all of the dnrgy (small D energy) burning ancient biomass, increasing global warming, adding unnecessary microfines to the air, contributing to noise pollution, and increasing Earth's entropy faster! :) They did, however, get to shout "first" at the next stop light to idle their diesel, glass-packs-enabled tank that also does Jake Braking to that next light as efficiently expensive as possible.
heynowheynow··on What’s up with Austin?
Illinois had to instate a moratorium because of their track record of convicting innocence people to death. A conservative estimate is 50 innocent people have been executed in the US in modern times, and over 200 on death row are also innocent. Also, consider the harsh sentences of mandatory minimums for petty drug crimes where there's now an elderly warehousing problem where harmless people lost their lives but are too frail to care for themselves. Furthermore, America has the highest incarceration rate in the world overrepresented by mostly brown and poor people. Rich white people use drugs at similar rates but don't go to jail for it.
