heycarsten··on Button Basics
Sorry about that :-(
heycarsten··on How to retire at 30 on $1 million
http://www.greaterfool.ca/2010/08/24/market-update-6 (Granted, Garth Turner is extreme, but he does not make things up.)
heycarsten··on Cars hacked through wireless tire sensors
With the robustness of modern ECUs I'm surprised that these signals are not checked before being evaluated. Even my Arduino is capable of doing that.
heycarsten··on Ask HN: What annoys you?
Deception online. Tricking people into providing their personal information and reselling that information to third parties.
heycarsten··on Ask HN: What annoys you?
Cyclists that disobey the rules of the road, but complain when motorists don't follow the rules of the road really bother me. (I am a cyclist.)
heycarsten··on Ask HN: What annoys you?
Same goes for "alot" instead of "a lot".
heycarsten··on Where does a tree get its mass?
Turns out he has a rant about this very issue: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MO0r930Sn_8
heycarsten··on Memo to CEOs & Founders: Stop Being Such Cheap Bastards
From my own experience this is _exactly_ what happens. Only they intelligently manipulated my shareholder agreement in a way that I had to actually buy the options, no paper transfer, I needed cold, hard cash. Having very little money at the time (being between jobs) I was unable to do so, which meant that I forfeited my options. Probably for the best anyway, because buying them didn't guarantee a buyout, only the option of one. I would have been out $5000, just waiting for the day to be bought out, which would probably never come.

Lesson learned: read things very carefully, confusing language is intended to be confusing. I basically gave away two years of my career to kool-aid equity. Just be really careful, and if you don't fully understand something ask someone who does understand. If you can't get a direct answer, leave. Don't waist your time; you're being gamed.

heycarsten··on CopperLicht - fast WebGL JavaScript 3D Engine
Can't seem to get the demo to work on the latest WebKit nightly build:

TypeError: Result of expression 'a.Pi' [undefined] is not a function.

heycarsten··on Rails 3.0 Beta Release
The improved email and routing are huge! Not to mention bundler for gems, I can't help but be a bit excited :-)
heycarsten··on When Rails Fails
Poor attention to detail is going to bite you in the ass as a programmer no matter what technology you're using.
heycarsten··on Starbucks testing mobile payment market, starts with iPhone app
There is no real gain in convenience compared to a Starbucks Card or cash, and you still have a paper receipt involved in the transaction. I'm having a hard time seeing how this is a step forward.
heycarsten··on Mistakes we made when naming our computers
We used the names of planets, once we ran out of those we started doing moons and stars. It's pretty badass.
heycarsten··on Google Chrome 3.0
I realize there is probably no place for it in marketing banter, but it bothers me that they don't give the WebKit project any visible credit.
heycarsten··on DjangoCon 2009 Presentations
I wish I could have attended. Hopefully next year.
heycarsten··on FTC forces Sears, Kmart out of the spyware business
Even with all that data, they still suck at marketing.
heycarsten··on Yeah Ok, So Facebook Punk’d Us
Absolutely awesome! Hubris bites back!
heycarsten··on 10 Downing Street: Treatment of Alan Turing was "appalling"
It's about time.
heycarsten··on Apple now censoring dictionaries in the App Store
Strip employees of all decision making and reasoning because that stuff is expensive. Create a protocol that they must follow, how could it possibly fail?
heycarsten··on Fast vector graphics word art with HTML canvas
I guess it doesn't work in the latest nightly of WebKit?
heycarsten··on Codeweavers to overtake Microsoft by 2018
LOL, these guys always crack me up.
heycarsten··on Stackoverflow Eating Away at Experts-Exchange
Death to Experts Exchange!
heycarsten··on Less, a leaner CSS
I use Sass daily and I will continue to. I don't understand the hate for the indentation sensitivity; no curly braces or semi-colons to deal with and visible structure are huge wins as far as I'm concerned. I guess I'm just not seeing the "obvious awesomeness" that makes this so much of an improvement over Sass. I can see the appeal for the use case of existing CSS but I find that rarely happens.
heycarsten··on A Django Developer’s Views on Rails
There are many ways of doing the same thing in Ruby? I guess that's true to some extent but I'm not really sure why it's a problem?

['cat', 'dog'] %w[ cat dog ]

Although these are not technically the same ... lambda { } proc { } Proc.new { }

string.match(/regex/) string =~ /regex/

object.is_a?(Thing) Thing === object

hash.merge!(hash) hash.update(hash)

Anyways, I'm not a Python programmer, but I can say (with regards to Ruby) when you are used to the language it feels right.

Why can't we just all get along and not troll the shit out of each-other?

heycarsten··on Will Higher Education Be the Next Bubble to Burst?
I can't help but think the real bubble is in our own inflated sense of ourselves. Everyone thinks their child is capable of becoming the next great whatever, but the reality is that there are only so many people with original and useful ideas out there.

Higher education is dangled as the carrot that is the means to achieving greatness. Everyone speculates that the future will yield awesomeness, but when it takes too long to reach our unrealistic expectations we overreact in the opposite fashion. We have this never-ending cycle of overinflated possibility followed by reality and an overreaction of conservation.

Is it perhaps a flaw in our culture? Selling an idea is more important than the idea itself. Getting "traction" or "backing" is more important than delivering something real and of actual value.
