hetspookjee··on Study puts fermented foods, not fire, as pivotal moment in human brain growth
Kombucha is another one.
hetspookjee··on Parisians vote in favour of tripling parking costs for SUVs
While I agree entirely I just wanna correct you for a bit:

The Gross Vehicle Weight (GVWR)refers to the maximum weight a vehicle is designed to carry including the net weight of the vehicle with accessories, plus the weight of passengers, fuel, and cargo, which is indeed a hefty 3375 kg.

The Weight Unladen (EU) is still a ridiculous 2810 kg for the EQS SUV 580 4matic

hetspookjee··on Netflix never used its $1M algorithm (2012)
I rent any movie I’d like for like 3-4eu instead of a monthly subscription with a tiny offering.
hetspookjee··on Dutch storm surge barrier closes automatically
This was the first time that the prediction of the water level was above 300cm and made the computer to close it automatically. It closed once before due to water level in 2007 but that was because the threshold was lowered to 260cm during the 2007 storm season. It’s tested every year though. Quite nice to spectate even though it takes two hours and is too slow to really see with the eye.
hetspookjee··on Dutch storm surge barrier closes automatically
On December 21, 2023 the Maeslantkering was closed automatically at the 300 cm threshold for the first time in history. During the day a forecast had been made that the water level in Rotterdam would reach critical height of 300 cm above NAP at around 23:30. There were discussions to close the Maeslantkering manually before that time, and the Port of Rotterdam started reducing traffic at 16:00. Around 18:00 the traffic across the Nieuwe Waterweg came to a complete standstill. Before the decision was actually made to manually close the Maeslantkering, the computer systems intervened and had begun the automatic closing procedure. Closing started at 20:15, a process which takes about 2 hours. The next day at 4:45 the gates were opened again.[8]

hetspookjee··on Tesla Cybertruck Pricing and Specs
Well I think one can start with a bit of an average car. I mean humans vary a lot too. Both in size and resilience. If there’d be some wireframe made that can represent a bit of the car rigidity of an average 2008 car for example we can definitely see how this monolith would vaporize any car, versus the Jazz that’d mostly dent itself in a crash. And include that in the rating as well. Current SUV trends are abysmal for others with their 800bhp and near 3000kg kerb weight. It’s I think a solid way to stop this race to the bottom.

From engineering explained the difference in the rollout for some fast cars is about 0.2-0.3 seconds on top of the actual number. Here’s the video https://youtu.be/9LTq45o0ttQ
hetspookjee··on NASA: Capillary Cup
Makes me wonder in how far you can actually. Wouldn’t the smell molecules also more or less stay roughly in the same space without convection and gravity playing their part?
hetspookjee··on Rimac unveils SineStack, battery energy storage system
Im quite bothered by the “standard” one foot roll-out that car manufacturers advertise these day with their 0-60 times. It’s not 0-60 with it when there’s one foot roll out so it just feels unrealistic. And besides the difference in time measured between actual 0-60 and the one with the one foot roll-out is huge.
hetspookjee··on iNaturalist strikes out on its own
What camera do you use? This one is so nicely zoomed https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/132443637

Almost looks like an image from an electron microscope the way the grass stands up.

hetspookjee··on I went to 50 different dentists: almost all gave a different diagnosis (1997)
Just take the leap with a new one that gives you good vibes. Skipping one side entirely is also a recipe for worse things to come. So, the longer you wait the worse it'll probably get.
hetspookjee··on Hollywood movie aside, just how good a physicist was Oppenheimer?
Don't forget most of us are using Leibniz' notation for calculus, though. They invented calculus around the same time.
hetspookjee··on What to do about aggressive moose
That kill seemed pointless in so many ways. Couldn’t he just back off?
hetspookjee··on Why woodpeckers can hammer without getting headaches (2022)
For all the times that I’ve seen woodpeckers at work. I only see them banging as hard as they could during mating season, as to make as much sound as possible to signal vitality. All other times I’ve seen them at work they’re calmly chipping away at a tree like a woodworker with a chisel, and no way near there max strength. Almost all articles I read only seem to mention that a woodpecker hammers as hard as possible all dag long which just isn’t true.

Also for anyone hearing a woodpecker banging metal, it’s the sound signaling during mating season. Dampen the metal and he’ll find another place.

hetspookjee··on Aleister Crowley, the Wickedest Climber Ever? (2022)
To me it seems as a rather obvious playful creation that anyone can conjure, and I’d rather attribute it to convergent evolution. Much like calculus by Newton and Leibniz.
hetspookjee··on Google has added ads on both its search page and Chrome://newtab
Unfortunately quite some things only work entirely on Chrome. My default is still Firefox but it’s no getting around it at times.
hetspookjee··on Apple’s iPhone 14 Redesign for Repair
I’m not suggesting an alternative material. I’m suggesting a more sane way of replacing the backside. For the iPhone 13 Pro it’s so expensive and hard to do they even just hand you a new phone rather than fixing it.
hetspookjee··on Apple’s iPhone 14 Redesign for Repair
Oh come on. The backside is made of glass and costs an astonishing 570euros to replace. That’s not striving to do right.
hetspookjee··on 134.5 kg Concrete Bike [video]
For some reason the feeling of getting exhausted on an ultralight racing bike feels much easier on the mind than getting exhausted on a regular bike with a flat tire. Similar with swimming with slick gear versus swimming with long shorts and a shirt.
hetspookjee··on NordVPN Review
If you’re going with a VPN provider one might as well go for a more privacy aware one like Mullvad.
hetspookjee··on Increased wind turbine rotor blade visibility to reduce avian fatalities
A story that stood by me is the one of the lyre bird and the hunt to near extinction in the early 1900s for their impressive tail feathers. I cannot find the source on wikipedia anymore nor can I find these conservation efforts in a quick google search, but what stood by me is that 120 years ago people were also concerned about conservation of species.
hetspookjee··on Spain will introduce free train travel
No my experience is that I sit in the hallway every time I take the train. I often get redirected because there’s something on the trail and or I miss my next train because a few min delay caused the quite tightly planned next train to be missed.
hetspookjee··on Spain will introduce free train travel
Here in the Netherlands it’s most often cheaper to go by car. In addition the trains are horrible unreliable and stacked with people so odds of getting a seat are very small. I’m not sure how we got here.
hetspookjee··on State lotteries transfer wealth out of needy communities, investigation finds
I am very skeptic of this theory as a lot winners of lottery’s end up in enormous debt after few years due to horrible mismanagement of their funds. Why take this odd route and not just directly implement UBI if that is the goal?
hetspookjee··on Apple, Google, Facebook's AV1 standards group under EU antitrust investigation
Given the compromises the Apple is willing to make to keep their foot in China’s market, you can be sure that neither of the big tech companies is willing to give up on the EU market. Let alone allow the vacuum to be scooped up by a more favourable tech company.
hetspookjee··on Ask HN: Feel bad about working in crypto, what to do?
I’m not in your position but can understand your concern. At the end of the day there is an enormous shortage of developers with good skills, and if you’ve spend your cruft in understanding the systems and all the insights that come with it, than they’d be rather easily transferred into others. Not knowing in what part of the system you’re involved, but given the presence on this forum I can only imagine you’re involved from a technical pov.

Back end engineers and data engineers are very much sought after and the distributed nature of tokens in general give raise to a large set of interesting problems, that in my opinion are some times better solved without involvement of the blockchain. But a lot of other concepts do still hold.

Seniority and being a good team member are also invaluable and hard to find, and something that doesn’t matter what technical skill you’re involved with.

So in short I wouldn’t think to much on the fact that you spend time in crypto, but rather spend the time thinking on what concepts and systems are transferrable to other domains and roles and have it be reflected in your resume and cv accordingly. Being a good team member is much more than technicals. You’re a human in a team with insights and knowledge.

hetspookjee··on Breaking up with Flask and FastAPI: Why they don’t scale for ML model serving
Just to add some ballparks: I have a yolov5 model that I run in PyTorch on a 3080 and the inference time is roughly 20ms. And inference with a 200estimator random forest is a few ms on a cpu. I can imagine that in some scenarios it’s not enough though.
hetspookjee··on Tell HN: Banned from LinkedIn for Reporting Wickr Drug Spam
Not OP, but if you are from LinkedIn or affiliated in any way I hope you understand the apperance of you as a fresh account with 2 karma just inquiring for the case # must seem odd and not entirely legit. In any case, it raises a set of red flags for me.
hetspookjee··on Animal magic: why intelligence isn’t just for humans
Ive heard the term for a lack of a better word and find it fair enough. But the point im making is that there are people that refuse to participate in the bio-industry due to ethical considerations, yet hunt for their own food and do so scarcely.
