herrherr··on Ask HN: What are the best technologies you've worked with this year?
Google App Engine.
herrherr··on Tell HN: I can't even get a job offering to work for free
This is my personal opinion, so feel free to disagree:

I would never work for free. I'm good at what I'm doing and I create value for that company/person. No need to give this away for free.

herrherr··on Paypal.com appears to be unavailable
What I like most, is that all people click on the link although it says "It's unavailable". Wondering if this has an additional effect on the availability.
herrherr··on Hacker News Munich Meetup
Hm, that's too far unfortunately :)

Perhaps there are some people who would like to meet up around Cologne.

herrherr··on Happy Holidays from the App Engine team - 1.4.0 SDK released
As a reference point:

Our service (getmetricmail.com) which is running on GAE had an uptime of 99.97% in November.

herrherr··on Happy Holidays from the App Engine team - 1.4.0 SDK released
Perhaps I'm being naive here, but doesn't an uptime-service like Pingdom do the job? They basically ping the site every 5 minutes which should keep the instance alive.

herrherr··on 23andMe for $99
To give you guys a reference point:

It's $62.95 for shipping it to Germany. Ouch.

herrherr··on What I learned from building WordGap on AppEngine
It's painless and fast so why shouldn't it be awesome?
herrherr··on What I learned from building WordGap on AppEngine
The #appengine channel on Freenode is a pretty good place to ask. There are oftentimes people from Google who are working on GAE and can help you out.

Worked for me several times.

herrherr··on Goodbye, Google App Engine
That is exactly our experience with the development of Metric Mail.

Yes, there are limitations. And most of them might get you upset first, but if you "work with the rules" it is a fantastic platform.

Metric Mail has been running absolutely fine since its launch in August, it has never failed us. Even under severe traffic it scaled without any problems.

We knew from the beginning what the limitations are and this way there were no big suprises during the development.

Another proof that you may look like a fool when trying to predict the future (Bell's argument).

herrherr··on How to Make Your Stuff in China
Any fellow hackers here that import goods from China? If so, care to share your experiences?
herrherr··on Ask HN: What are you working on right now?
You can just share the link. Also, the "multiple recipient" feature is nearly there.
herrherr··on Ask HN: What are you working on right now?
We currently have about 3000 users and process way more than 20000 reports every month. So this shouldn't be a problem, although it depends on the size of your network ;)

Let me know how you like it and if you have any suggestions.

http://getmetricmail.com - An easy way to receive Google Analytics reports.

herrherr··on Ask HN: Anyone else doing a non-software startup?
It would be interesting to know from where you are purchasing the goods (if they are not self-made).

Do you get them directly from the manufacturer or do some of you have experience with importing stuff from China/etc.?

herrherr··on Incredibly Depressing Mega Millions Lottery Simulator
I don't want to try this since I fear to use up my win-a-lot-of-money-in-the-lottery-once chance.
herrherr··on Learned helplessness
But how can you help people to get out of this 'learned helplessness'?
herrherr··on Piwik hits 1.0 - Open source web analytics
Don't know if this relates directly to the question about scalability, but the main site is not loading for me, nor is the demo site.

It looks like the tracking script hosted on demo.piwik.org is slowing the main site down.

herrherr··on Ask HN: Do you believe we'll ever encounter aliens?
Check out this video from the American Museum of Natural History: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=17jymDn0W6U

- It makes me think that we cannot be the only society in the universe

- But it also makes be think that it is unlikely that we will find them in the near future or vice versa

herrherr··on Ask HN: How are you securing your laptops in public places?
I haven't seen anything suspicious yet. But you could use LittleSnitch (on Mac) to see when and what it is sending.
herrherr··on Ask HN: How are you securing your laptops in public places?
That's what the open guest profile is for. At least in theory :)
herrherr··on Ask HN: How are you securing your laptops in public places?
- Normally I take it with me, just like swombat does

- Harddrive is encrpyted

- Installed http://preyproject.com/ (free) - allows you to track it in case it gets stolen

- My profile is secured by a password, but there is a blank profile that people can just log into, so that Prey can do its work :)

herrherr··on Ask HN: What are you working on (hacking)?
Thanks for the feedback. The email-only option is definitely on our list, it will be a bit tricky due to the different mail clients but still doable.
herrherr··on Ask HN: What are you working on (hacking)?
http://www.getmetricmail.com

In one sentence: Get your Google Analytics data straight to your inbox.

Build as part of my dissertation. Build on Google App Engine.

herrherr··on Realtime Twitter / capital market analysis in Haskell. Also, anyone hiring?
More info would be quite helpful.
herrherr··on Ask HN: Where do you host your webapp?
If it's Ruby: Heroku

If it's Python: App Engine

Anything else: Linode

herrherr··on [dead]
Seriously, this is not for the faint-hearted.
