If you'd prefer to not need to do any code changes at all, head on over to my site and sign up for our private beta: http://www.djangy.com -- we're inviting more people every day :-)

I can recommend djangy wholeheartedly, having been a happy beta user for a few weeks now. The guys are responsive & helpful and the service is great.

As someone new to python & django, my main pain-point was deployment (haven't picked up fabric yet). For this djangy shines.

I keep seeing you post this link, and I sign up every time. Can't wait to try it!

Does djangy run on-top of EC2, or something else?

Yes, the worker hosts currently run on EC2.

I just got in today! Hopefully I can find some time to put you guys through your paces... The service seems valuable.

As much trouble as we've had with Google App Engine I still have to say that I genuinely respect how open and accommodating they've been to people who want to avoid vendor lock in.

I can't think of another company that would do something like this.

Amazon and Rackspace both seem to be less prone to lock-in than AppEngine

Amazon and Rackspace: Infrastructure as a Service

GAE: Platform as a Service

But they're not really offering the same thing, are they?

Don't Amazon and Rackspace require you to administrate things?

It's important to note that this is not "Pure Django", it recommends django-nonrel, which is actually a fork of Django.

I think an important point (that they make) is that you can write an app/project using django-nonrel and have it be completely compatible with the vanilla Django on another server.

i don't think it's really a fork, but rather a django database engine that supports "datastores" + related tools

Unfortunately right now it is a fork -- django-nonrel makes some internal changes to Django. I'm hoping to reconcile those changes with core at some point so that -nonrel could indeed be just a backend, but we're not there yet.
