herewulf··on Claude dethrones ChatGPT as top U.S. app after Pentagon saga
This might be preferable to the ever expanding tangled dependency graph and associated supply chain risk. OTOH, perhaps said graph can be reasonably wrangled with LLMs and enable safe small library re-use?
herewulf··on OpenAI agrees with Dept. of War to deploy models in their classified network
No, the Department of War is the former name of the Department of the Army and nothing else. DoD is a new creation that includes the Army, historic Department of the Navy, and the other, post-WW2, new services.

"Changing it back" is completely ahistoric.

herewulf··on Steam Hardware: Launch timing and other FAQs
> Steam Machine's SSD (NVMe 2230 or 2280) and memory (DDR5 SODIMMs) are both accessible and upgradeable.

So, you're saying you can still ship on time without including these things and we just add them ourselves? Cool.

herewulf··on SanDisk crushes wallets with up to 2.8X SSD price hikes
PC enthusiasists won't soon forget this when voting with their wallets. Shame that Micron went away. Where else is there to turn?

Meanwhile, I have a box of hand-me-down spinning rust to fall back on. Sigh.

herewulf··on EFF to Close Friday in Solidarity with National Shutdown
Your oven doesn't work on Sundays? That ranks high among the stupidest things I've ever heard.

So, how do you get around that? Constantly messing with the clock?

As an end user hand assembling desktop services on non-Systemd distros (Artix, Devuan, Gentoo, Guix) over the years, and thus had no concern about APIs, Pipewire just works and PulseAudio gave endless trouble.

herewulf··on Spanish track was fractured before high-speed train disaster, report finds
I don't watch anime or really follow anything specifically Japanese, but I read Shogun as a teenager and then decades later (lately) I read about the Mishima Incident which attempted to restore the Emperor to power in 1970. Quite frankly the way the article was written and the events that transpired were extremely reminiscent of Shogun. The latter was written in 1975 but I am skeptical how much non-Japanese information was available about it leading up to 1975 when Shogun was published, considering this Wikipedia article has an obviously rough translation. Just the way the people involved relate to each other is quite unexpected from a Western perspective.

My tentative conclusion is that there is something really unique about Japanese culture and there is certainly nothing wrong with that.

I grew up playing all the Mario games and wrote a dissertation on an Internet forum, so now I have a PhD in both Japanese and Italian culture!
herewulf··on Guix for Development
It's a little inconvenient but for example my Framework laptop Intel WiFi chip requires a binary blob and I want aware of this. Now that I am, I can make better hardware purchasing decisions. There are plenty of alternatives that don't require that blob and it's the only thing I need from the no free channel.

You can even generate Docker images deterministically with Guix. :)

You can run Nix packages on Guix if there isn't a "native" package for it. Look at nix-service.

https://guix.gnu.org/manual/1.5.0/en/html_node/Miscellaneous...

I've never felt the need myself. If something is missing, I add it and I think that is the real fun in running Guix because creating your own well defined package or service is deeply rewarding.

Anyway, you can find people using it in the wild either by search engine[1] or with Toys[2] which is also handy for finding examples of missing packages too.

herewulf··on Microsoft will give the FBI a Windows PC data encryption key if ordered
Expect your door to come crashing in any second now. I hope I am joking about this.

I hear Canada is nice though.

herewulf··on Microsoft will give the FBI a Windows PC data encryption key if ordered
I hope they don't wake up because they deserve to lose a lot of business after decades of abusing their monopolistic position to push software that prioritizes their own interests and not that of their customers.
herewulf··on Microsoft will give the FBI a Windows PC data encryption key if ordered
How would you even know that your opt-out request isn't silently ignored? Or your re-encrypted drive's key got backed up to the cloud because an update silently inverted a flag?
herewulf··on GNU Guix 1.5.0 Released
It's great to have new images to start from. Definitely gives a new leg up for new installs. For installations you already have, release numbers don't really mean a lot.

I want to mention a few resources for anyone diving into Guix to write your own packages and services. It took me a while to come across Toys[1] which is a great search tool for any packages you might be missing or examples of how to write packages/services. YMMV on the quality of 3rd party things that turn up.

Speaking of 3rd party things, there are a lot of great blog articles floating around for doing interesting things with Guix that the official documentation does not discuss. A lot of this stuff should go into the Guix Cookbook[2] but volunteers spending a lot of time writing documentation (and then getting the appropriate review) is always going to be a struggle. Just beware of a few CLI argument changes in regards to older articles.

Also, worth mentioning is the move to Codeberg has been great for network performance for end users pulling updates. Sadly Savannah is down a lot or is just slow.

herewulf··on A Year of 3D Printing
It really is poor taste. Parents like me might want to spend time 3D printing with children without having to tip toe around an explanation for this username.

I never really heard this word until I was 18 (in the military) and it's occasionally part of my vocabulary if I, say, drop a sturdy wrench on my foot.

herewulf··on Capital One to acquire Brex for $5.15B
Don't you think the 2 to 4% is built into the prices of every merchant that accepts credit cards, big or small?

It's not a great system but it's what we have so using debit instead of credit does mean losing out.

herewulf··on AI generated music barred from Bandcamp
+1 for ripping with abcde

Make sure you enable its MusicBrainz support. I used to painstakingly input all the band / album / track title metadata but then discovered that people were already doing it for me.

However, then you go down the MB rabbit hole with obscure music that no one has ever inputted. Still, it's a quick and easy way to contribute and then it's available for everyone.

herewulf··on Stop Doom Scrolling, Start Doom Coding: Build via the terminal from your phone
There's always an edge case. Speaking of which, here's someone who would really benefit from a hard column width limit and limited nesting that modern programmers (particularly ones using various IDEs) so carelessly violate these days.
herewulf··on Stop Doom Scrolling, Start Doom Coding: Build via the terminal from your phone
I think I'll take any LLM slop code over the written-on-phone-by-"developers" slop code.
herewulf··on Stop Doom Scrolling, Start Doom Coding: Build via the terminal from your phone
Not the parent but a project (glorified Bash script) called vcsh[1] has served me well over the years for managing multiple Git repositories containing my dotfiles (separation of concerns).

Lately I have migrated some of that to Guix Home because the other half of the problem is having all the dependent programs necessary for the dotfiles installed automatically at the appropriate versions.

The latter one especially falls into the realm of tinkering. :)
