herewulf··on It's hard to justify buying a Framework 12
Absolutely, and this is also a big deal for longevity of your purchase. I have an iMac from 2012 and it's a beautiful piece of reliable hardware, with a beautiful screen. However, the software is stuck on some version of macOS from years ago and so more and more applications are refusing to install. It's on life support with Firefox ESR and MacPorts (just recently — was on Homebrew). And it works fine for browsing and some light FOSS gaming. Not if Apple had their way though! They think it ought to be in the dump and I should have bought something else by now.

Well, I have a Framework 13 also, running Linux, and despite the hardware being from 2022, it's all current software. And it will continue to be, practically as long as I wish it.

So, yes, if we want to talk about value (like the author of the article), where is the value when some capricious corporation decides when you are done with your computer?

herewulf··on Last.fm is now independent
The "-" character appears pretty frequently in song/album titles, maybe even artist names. There could be some sense in not using it as a substitute for space in this context.
herewulf··on Show HN: Rocksky – Music scrobbling and discovery on the AT Protocol
I would like to see some option to offset the scrobbling times for privacy. I've cooled on Last.fm in recent years because I've realized that it's a very good, public indicator of when I'm at my desk. Self hosted may be the way forward but maybe someone wants the best of both worlds.

Yes, I've become paranoid in my old age.

This is better so you think about the commands that you're pasting into your terminal before you do it, rather than just one blob of who-knows-what.

However, what I don't understand is why there isn't just a single Dockerfile that does it all. `docker build` is step 4 or something.

It's no worse than things like blog and vlog. Words that took me at least a decade to come to terms with.
herewulf··on New copy of earliest poem in English, written 1,3k years ago, discovered in Rome
'garden' came into English via Old French but it's ultimately Frankish (another Germanic language) so 'yard' and 'garden' are cognates. Interestingly they have a close sense.

herewulf··on Music with lyrics interferes with cognitive tasks (2023)
Interesting. Guitarist (as a hobby) here. I find familiar, favorite music good for concentration, with or without lyrics. But new music is what gets me. I give it too much attention, similar to what you describe.

I mostly listen to metal and all its various subgenres.

herewulf··on US special forces soldier arrested after allegedly winning $400k on Maduro raid
Imagine doing an easy tour in your air conditioned Kuwaiti logistics office and then getting blown to bits by a ballistic missile because no one bothered to tell you about the war that was being initiated which would cause such missiles in retaliation. Yeah, that's demoralizing too.
herewulf··on US special forces soldier arrested after allegedly winning $400k on Maduro raid
That MSG works for a Captain or a Lieutenant. If said MSG is good, there might be a future of advising a commanding officer on uniforms and length of grass at increasingly higher echelons. The rank is not newsworthy.
herewulf··on US special forces soldier arrested after allegedly winning $400k on Maduro raid
This might burst some bubbles but this is absolutely a little guy because anything below a field grade officer (or the CSM sidekick below brigade) is a little guy and a battalion is actually quite low on the food chain.

Yes, there are some hard working NCOs and junior Os out there that make shit happen, but they are not the decision makers and make for great fall guys when shit hits the fan.

herewulf··on Google broke its promise to me – now ICE has my data
True, but it also assumes HN is engaging in this practice which is not a given because it's a rather unusual site.
herewulf··on Google broke its promise to me – now ICE has my data
The content of the message is the credibility. It doesn't matter where it came from or who posted it. This exact topic comes up every time Google reveals its true self and lots of us have a resurgence of our latent interest to de-Google (the massive inconvenience being the major barrier).
herewulf··on Google broke its promise to me – now ICE has my data
In addition to what the sibling comments say, this also puts Fastmail at risk of having their US based service suspended while they attempt to resist government overreach (were they to attempt to do so) which is really not a lot better for their users.
herewulf··on Google broke its promise to me – now ICE has my data
While the rest of your comment is sound, the police do not make "big bucks" by any stretch of the imagination and there's a serious citation needed for the job being less dangerous than the ones you listed. I am pretty sure I have never read multiple news articles like "landscaper shot while sitting in vehicle filling paperwork" or "armed man commits suicide by bartender".

I have numerous friends and acquaintances in this career field. Policing is a dangerous job, just not for everyone all the time on the whole. The barrier to entry is low and highly competitive but the selection process is a suboptimal filter. The pay isn't great compared to so many other things, but it's similar to the military in that qualified people show up and get trained to do the job which leads to an entire career, just without all the big downsides of military life. All these things combined is why bad apples can get into positions of authority and commit abuses.

herewulf··on Google broke its promise to me – now ICE has my data
Yeah! Just like at the United States Capitol.
herewulf··on Google broke its promise to me – now ICE has my data
While this may be good practical advice, it's the principle that matters.

The Administration is testing how far it can go and today it's non-citizens, tomorrow it's citizens.

In fact citizens' rights have already been violated, for example, with numerous reports of Native Americans getting picked up by ICE. DHS goons drunk on power don't care about racial profiling. They have quotas to fill!

So, next you'll say:

"Should have known better than to look Mexican in front of that Home Depot.."

"Should have known better to look Mexican out on the street.."

Do you see where this leads?

herewulf··on Apple's accidental moat: How the "AI Loser" may end up winning
The one we're in where "software" doesn't just mean an app that someone downloads from a website or an app store. Software includes lots of server side components, etc, etc.

I once noticed my name in the Chromium OS credits due to a patch I had submitted to a library that's on every Chromebook. 1 million would be a small number for Chromebooks alone.

herewulf··on The Fediverse deserves a dumb graphical client
I read it as in "dumb terminal". It's just rendering HTML as is, not trying to do anything clever. But maybe I'm just pining for the days of VT100.

My ideal client would be an Emacs one, focused on plain text but can still display images. No doubt this exists.

But.. I've never gotten into the Fediverse or indeed any social media. The decentralized, small web premise sounds nice though.

herewulf··on The dangers of California's legislation to censor 3D printing
That is definitely not how gang members are occupying their thoughts and activities. Real firearms are super easy to get in the US, legally or illegally, and it takes much more than "untraceable" firearms to get away with shootings.
herewulf··on Now is the best time to write code by hand
It sounds like PHP and JavaScript all over again. The barrier was low and a lot of slop was produced by their users. Eventually due to huge demand, a lot of sophisticated things emerged (think V8, various frameworks, other browser gymnastics and evolving standards, etc).
herewulf··on EFF is leaving X
This is on point but someone is taking offense by being called a "weirdo" (thus the down votes, I think). Yes, we are weirdos on alternate social media, just like we are weirdos who use Linux, Emacs, write Lisp, etc.. It's weird, i.e.: Unusual. "Geek" might have been a better term to use though.

Geeks and weirdos donate to EFF. :)

herewulf··on EFF is leaving X
I think we can all agree that racism is a bad thing but staunchly declaring "anti-racism" as your priority seems to veer into the territory of consistently finding racism where there is none. It sounds suspiciously like historic witch hunting (and I hate that this term has been recently overused practically to the point of ruination).

Probably someone would have bombed their country of they had done that before. That and the reverse are pretty basic assumptions..

herewulf··on Git commands I run before reading any code
Reminds me of how I started using Git when it was up and coming: It was the best Subversion client out there and no one knew I was using it!
herewulf··on US and Iran agree to provisional ceasefire
Not capturing the weapons officer (the pilot was quickly rescued) was a missed opportunity for Iran, not a failure. The Trump Admin was incredibly lucky there is not currently a hostage situation and no one else was killed or injured[1] in the rescue. "Merely" 10s or 100s(?) of millions of dollars in equipment was lost in the process.

A bunch of US servicemembers have died or been maimed to achieve a rocky ceasefire with the end state looking worse than before the operation.

I certainly feel for the civilians affected, but from a pure "America First" perspective, this is a complete and total US failure.

[1]: Though I'm skeptical about the truth in this when officials have been bragging about helicopters with bullet holes in them.
