hereforphone··on DuckDuckGo “down-rank sites associated with Russian disinformation”
Have you remembered to renew your BBC license this year?
hereforphone··on DuckDuckGo “down-rank sites associated with Russian disinformation”
And DuckDuckGo has just lost it's only distinguishing feature (attempted neutrality).
hereforphone··on Toll signs on 101 report your transponder setting
California is a confusing place to drive. Trying to find out how to pay tolls online was confusing. One bridge had a "stop and pay tolls!" sign, but no one was stopping, and I found out later they issue the toll online. This was all mostly in the Bay area on a recent visit.
hereforphone··on Ask HN: Any weird tips for weight loss?
Exercise. Eat right. QED.
hereforphone··on Some tiny personal programs I've written
Wall of text on point. I got a shelter dog 5~ years ago and it is a relatively difficult breed. I knew nothing about dogs. But I love it and take care of it (because I take ownership of my decisions, particularly where they involve the life of another creature), and it's gotten better over time. I also exercise caution where necessary.

If I had to do it again, I'd get an easier breed.

I don't think there are any engineers (people who have gone to engineering school) that haven't used LaTeX. [Editing based on replies]: Apparently I am wrong. Maybe it's just at the grad school level that one can expect to use LaTeX frequently; I made the assumption because I took a Master's.

To those thinking about getting a dog: please consider a shelter first.
hereforphone··on Twitter's new Tor onion service
And they'll still delete tweets they disagree with.
hereforphone··on Internet Backbone Giant Lumen Shuns .RU
It's virtue signaling. Companies are trying to outdo one another in showing support. This is why we get insane things like Namecheap threatening to cancel domains belonging to anyone registering from Russia.
hereforphone··on The new silent majority: People who don't tweet
There is another silent majority: those who have their opinions cancelled by social media outlets. This includes Twitter.
hereforphone··on Nosferatu: The monster who still terrifies, 100 years on
Do you find the original video low quality as well? Would you like the video to be updated to be more modern?
hereforphone··on Moscow police officers stop people, request their phones to read their messages
Yes. What people don't understand is that much (maybe most) of the world is like this.
hereforphone··on Notes on Nationalism (1945)
There is no narrative. Humans prefer to function alongside those who hold similar values to their own. This increases efficiency (when the values are productive) and naturally results in a feedback loop that ideally will improve that value set.

I know many of us have to go to HR training now and learn about the wonders of diversity, but there's a lot to be said (in nature and history) from shared values and culture.

hereforphone··on The Scientist and Engineer's Guide to Digital Signal Processing
Interesting to see this here. I bought this book and I sometimes reference the free online PDFs too. This is a great book for those interested in engineering and signals.
hereforphone··on Help Censored Users – Run a Tor Bridge
I forget, am I supposed to be pro giving Russian citizens access to unfiltered Internet now, or against?
hereforphone··on Ask HN: Why would some people fight for a country that they emigrated from?
To me it's more confusing that there are those who'd immigrate to a country, then abandon it in that country's time of need.
hereforphone··on My journey for dual displays with my M1 Pro Mac (2021)
I did this and I agree that it's a better solution (for me). Keeping your neck twisted to the side for long periods of time is not good. With an extra wide monitor you can pull over windows to the center if you want to focus on them for any significant period of time.
hereforphone··on The road to success is paved with rejection letters
Sending a rejection letter (email) out is a nice gesture. Too often companies just ghost you, even if you've spent time with them in their office during interviews and lunch.
hereforphone··on The road to success is paved with rejection letters
This isn't true at all in my opinion. Hiring criteria are so vague, subjective, and interpersonal fit is also very subjective, that failure isn't a direct indication of one's ceiling.
hereforphone··on Mojang to Require a Microsoft Account to Play Minecraft
Reports of people being locked out and other troubles. Microsoft soils everything they touch. They have the money to get things right, they just somehow don't. I just don't get it.
hereforphone··on Namecheap: Russia Service Termination
HN skews young so unrealistic platitudes make their way into these threads frequently. When these people grow up they may or may not learn that "life is not that simple", depending on their comfort level while growing. Those outside the US and West in general probably already know better than to say things as simple as "Why not just overthrow the government stupid?"
hereforphone··on Namecheap: Russia Service Termination
I'm not Turk. Good assumption though.
hereforphone··on Namecheap: Russia Service Termination
I imagine the conversation today went something like:

> NamecheapCEO: "What % of our business comes from Russia?"

> Accountant: "It's marginal."

> NamecheapCEO: "Cool. I have a great idea to get some spotlight."

Am I far off?

hereforphone··on Namecheap: Russia Service Termination
Taking bets for how long until the CEO backtracks on this and says we misunderstood his intention.
hereforphone··on Namecheap: Russia Service Termination
Perhaps it's not like the US where you stop paying taxes and no one even mentions it for several years. Then you get a slap-on-the-wrist fine and have to pay back taxes.
hereforphone··on Namecheap: Russia Service Termination
Maybe he prefers to stay on topic.
hereforphone··on Namecheap: Russia Service Termination
Are they cancelling service for the government, or individuals who happen to live in Russia?
hereforphone··on Namecheap: Russia Service Termination
Would you give me a list of "wrong" things I shouldn't do, or "wrong" places I shouldn't live, in order to not have my service terminated in the future? I live in Turkey sometimes. Am I in danger of losing my Namecheap account if Erdoğan (the dictator) does something even more crazy than usual, in the future?
hereforphone··on Namecheap: Russia Service Termination
If they're willing to terminate service for political reasons in this case, who's to say they won't do it in the future for other political reasons? Here begins the slippery slope of Namecheap terminating service to those it deems "wrong".

Been a happy, confident Namecheap user for a long time. Now I'm not so confident.

hereforphone··on S&P lowers Russia's rating to 'junk' status, Moody's issues junk warning
So we use the junk rating as a political tool now. In other words, it means nothing objective anymore.
