herbst··on EU ban on destruction of unsold clothes and shoes enters into application
> Who pays for the logistics cost of moving and stocking these products in discount stores and giveaway centers?

All the examples I know of (Austria, Switzerland) are social clubs/associations (whatever that is called) and DO NOT depend on tax payer money.

herbst··on Is this the end of the once-mighty GoPro?
I'd love to film in 3d. But being dependent on a single app of a single company (that is not even a good app right now) is literally the worst feature for a hardware I could imagine.
herbst··on LG monitors silently install software through Windows Update without consent
As if the world needs more reasons to understand that windows is activly making your life worse. Step by step.
herbst··on Microsoft Can Track Users via a Windows Device ID
I heard same argument with telegram (however I wouldnt consider it to be Russian tech these days) but yes. Choose your poison, basically. And some entities definitely seem(ed) less evil to our society than others.
herbst··on Europe's company websites are mostly served by US vendors
So only in 2 smaller countries the "majority" is US served? That's what I read in that graphic
herbst··on Microsoft Can Track Users via a Windows Device ID
I know people who avoid US tech and happily use Chinese or Russian tech here in central Europe. Not trusting US tech isn't new, it just gets a lot worse
herbst··on Solar rail could become common in Europe after successful trial in Switzerland
To be fair, swiss train tickets cost a lot of money too.
herbst··on The Vespa at 80: Why the Italian scooter remains the coolest thing on 2 wheels
I had a 50cc and also could do wheelies. I loved my Vespa, it was always ready for whatever I wanted to do. Sometimes 45kmh, in a warm day even 55.
herbst··on Ask HN: Who is quitting? (July 2026)
Quit 10 years ago. In the meanwhile I tried building my own things, first few years have been poorly the last few have been great. Never give up people :)
herbst··on What Ozempic does to the gut-brain axis
> If it doesn't have immediate side effects for a given person it's unlikely to have them later

Why would this sentence make any sense?

herbst··on What Ozempic does to the gut-brain axis
I lost weight by changing my eating habits (which definitely wasn't easy but doable) and have family who used GPT with different results. So a little of both I guess.

I stand by my words that just using Ozembic without changing your habits on the way can't be the right way. And as far as I know studies suggest that that is actually the case. Like with any diet really

herbst··on What Ozempic does to the gut-brain axis
I mean the idea is that GPT helps to reduce appetite while you learn to eat properly. Not to take GPT the rest of your life.
herbst··on What Ozempic does to the gut-brain axis
Sounds like they eat the wrong things. So learning to eat properly and stopping with GLP after a while sounds more reasonable to me.

Also that's how my mum got it in the swiss test run. It was never supposed to be long term, just to help change eating habits.

herbst··on What Ozempic does to the gut-brain axis
I know several people who stopped both of your examples and only used them for a while until the underlaying issues got fixed. I am just in the progress of stopping with anti depression meds. Without bigger issues.

Maybe in America you do, here in Europe I am not so sure about that

herbst··on Ask HN: Will programmers write more efficient code during the memory shortage?
Most AAA games maybe. All the unity games that run sh*t on anything except a high end PC aren't.

However that's more or less unity fault

herbst··on The AirPods Effect
Or you are just old (me too)
herbst··on Ask HN: Will programmers write more efficient code during the memory shortage?
No. They won't.

Most games are written for the 3% who can afford a luxury gaming PC. That's how the market is working for a while now.

herbst··on Microsoft new Outlook takes 10 seconds to do what Outlook Classic does instantly
Just tried it. It loads instantly and then loads some other stuff I never seen before. However for me the main thing still loads instantly.
herbst··on Microsoft new Outlook takes 10 seconds to do what Outlook Classic does instantly
When was the last time they did? Buying existing companies does not count
herbst··on Sixty percent of US consumers say 'AI' in brand messaging is a turnoff
It depends. Sometimes I have really stupid questions and I don't want to read the website, when I know I don't annoy a human when I click "chat" I may use it to ask my stupid question.

But this is a exception most of the time I just try to confuse the AI to get to an actual human faster.

herbst··on US Air Force B-52 bomber crashes after takeoff, Edwards Air Force Base says
Why is stuff like this on Hackernews?
herbst··on Show HN: Veterinarian turned founder, AI lawn diagnosis
How comes there is this one very specific style the AI makes websites look like with little to no variance?
herbst··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (June 2026)
My mental health
herbst··on ICE denies having a protester database. A letter to Congress sheds more light
Is that the case? Did they also have some kind of untrained police force (ice) doing the dirty things?

From here in Europe it looks like that shithole of country completely lost their mind. But who knows what is real anymore

herbst··on Buy a train, bridge or tracks from the Swiss Railway
Some things are actually interesting and useable (as kinda normal human being, without the need for a new bridge or train)
herbst··on Let's Encrypt bans certificate usage in any US sanctioned territory [pdf]
If nothing has changed it's still the only one that's free and instant. Back in the day you'd had to pay $10/y and install manually
herbst··on Switzerland wil have a referendum to cap population at 10M
Honestly I don't know import statistics but the majority of food I eat is from Switzerland. A lot of imported products are complicated because they often contain more weird stuff like artificial colouring, sweeteners or thickening stuff.

Familien nachzug is a thing where people can get their elderly parents (or anyone family really) to move to Switzerland a lot more easily. This can indeed add additional costs to the pension and health care system.

The implications with the EU surely could be problematic.

herbst··on Switzerland wil have a referendum to cap population at 10M
Don't look at tiktok then. It seems pretty much won in there.
herbst··on Switzerland wil have a referendum to cap population at 10M
What products are you thinking? Chocolate and cheese are actually not that relevant as some people want it to be. Gold trade, software, banking however is unlikely to decrease a lot no matter the border rules.
herbst··on Switzerland wil have a referendum to cap population at 10M
To be fair there is the same thing between Austria and Germany for example. Except it's more strict there even.
