herbst··on If Meta loses this trial, Instagram and Facebook could change forever
They made WhatsApp the barely supervised TikTok/Instagram for children. How is that not child neglect to begin with?
herbst··on Ask HN: What non-technical skill boosted your engineering career the most?
Honestly: Lazyness. Nearly all I do has being lazy as core motive. Never create myself more work.
herbst··on Covert CIA program said to be behind mysterious attacks on Galápagos boats
Cool fisherman you have there. Guess that's more than enough reason to just bomb them.

I do not claim to understand american logic. I don't want to either.

herbst··on Covert CIA program said to be behind mysterious attacks on Galápagos boats
Is it? Where I am from you don't get murdered for anything usually.

I know little about American customs tho

herbst··on Deutsche Bank becomes first foreign yuan clearing bank in Europe
It's very easy to avoid American products (there aren't many here in Europe you can't easily avoid) but it's kinda impossible to do the same with china.

Except software/web, avoiding US tech is kinda complicated too.

herbst··on Deutsche Bank becomes first foreign yuan clearing bank in Europe
> For instance, you can mock Trump and question the US all day.

Only if you are US citizen (so already locked into the system) or never plan to visit the US.

But it's very likely you won't be let in and in worst case be interrogated for several days if you try to. Or even worse if you aren't white.

So nah, it's not that easy and definitely not that "free speech" for anyone.

And people actively rooting for it even
herbst··on Deutsche Bank becomes first foreign yuan clearing bank in Europe
Just checked. The last 2 years yuan was way more stable than USD compared to CHF and the last 5 years about similar.

I don't see why I would prefer USD

Especially, realistically speaking i buy WAY more from china than the US

herbst··on GoAccess – Open-source real-time log analyzer and interactive viewer
When customers ask me for visitor metrics I tend to explain that it doesn't matter anymore before I show them them the highly inflated absolutely unrealistic numbers.
herbst··on Covert CIA program said to be behind mysterious attacks on Galápagos boats
I mean we all knew the US is bombing innocent fisher man outside their jurisdiction. That is exactly what central European media seemed to agree on.

We still miss the "why" and how there are no consequences so far

herbst··on Lost my phone at the office. Claude suggested tracking Bluetooth signal strength
Is this actually what all these horribly buggy "startups" speculate on with their horribly buggy products?
herbst··on Incentives are for losers
If I've got told, "oh btw, when you are sick you only get 70% of your wage" my risk management system would go full alarm mode. That's a risk I wouldn't want to take on me.

However whatever Germany is doing right now definitely isn't the way to to either.

herbst··on Xbox goes down. You can't play games you own on disc
As far as i am concerned they stole my Minecraft account by force migrating it and me cannot being bothered doing all that, all the time again.
herbst··on Mini retirements: like a sabbatical, but much smaller
This is what I ment. But I also realized that most people don't have the luxury of unemployed money which makes changing jobs way less risky generally.
herbst··on Mini retirements: like a sabbatical, but much smaller
Anyone NOT doing this between jobs?
herbst··on More German than many Germans
Swiss people often don't see how awesome swiss is themself except they have been away for a longer while to see how shitty every other place tends to be.

Ex. Most people here think Europe is generally this clean. They never bothered looking out of their car in literally any other neighbor country.

Source: Austria living in Switzerland who also lived in Thailand, Malaysia, Czech, .. for a while.

herbst··on More German than many Germans
I also like watching the Austrian (actually a tip if you know German, check ATV) and the swiss edition. Pretty sure swiss has at least a German and a French one, maybe even another one. So yeah, there is that.
herbst··on Why Is Europe Burning?
At least in Switzerland all of that is done and discussed publicly.
herbst··on Why Is Europe Burning?
No, Europe in general is very aware of global warming and it's an active discussion how we move on with that.
herbst··on Increasing the lifespan of a bulb makes it worse in every other way
I bought a bunch of bulps when I moved to my house about 7 years ago. Some are on like 90% of the time since.

I haven't had a single one go bad so far.

Cheap WiZ bulps

herbst··on If coding has been solved, why does software keep getting worse?
I stopped with Microsoft buying minecraft. But before that they didn't change but add things.

I can't remember a single time I was disappointed because something changed.

herbst··on Who's afraid of Chinese models?
Still not "normal" if you come from a more free place where things like this really don't matter at all.
herbst··on Who's afraid of Chinese models?
Ex. https://apertus.ai

A swiss one. No idea if it's any good but it's there

herbst··on Who's afraid of Chinese models?
If you post content like this you likely to get refused entering the US. I realize it doesn't apply to US citizens but it's also not like everyone can say what they want and get away with it.
herbst··on REO Trucks I4 4WD Pickup Truck Starts at $21,500
There are many great EV cars. But when you have a trailer or caravan we still talk about a heavily reduced range (and often they aren't allowed to pull at all, or weight limits get a problem, at least in Europe)
herbst··on Is this the end of the once-mighty GoPro?
I didn't know that. I've got told it's a proprietary format while got shown the insta360 app.

Good to know, and reconsider!

herbst··on Reviving a 15-year-old netbook with Arch Linux
I basically had the choice between this and no laptop at the time ...
herbst··on Reviving a 15-year-old netbook with Arch Linux
Same here! I still have it in has tiny laptop bag, back then it worked wonderfully for me as a mobile Linux development machine. I had more battery lifetime than with ANY machine after that (10+ hours screen time), but to fair I only run the bare minimum on it.

However the charging broke and I never got around trying to repair it.

herbst··on EU ban on destruction of unsold clothes and shoes enters into application
> Who pays for the logistics cost of moving and stocking these products in discount stores and giveaway centers?

All the examples I know of (Austria, Switzerland) are social clubs/associations (whatever that is called) and DO NOT depend on tax payer money.

herbst··on Is this the end of the once-mighty GoPro?
I'd love to film in 3d. But being dependent on a single app of a single company (that is not even a good app right now) is literally the worst feature for a hardware I could imagine.
