herbst··on Stripe said to abandon $50B pursuit of PayPal
I remember when it came out they promised crypto payments and what not and then it never actually delivered anything else than being another confusing option to use PayPal
herbst··on Stripe said to abandon $50B pursuit of PayPal
In European online shopping it's very common for everything thats not ment for only one country.

Within Switzerland there is zero need for PayPal do you don't see it as much, but if you ship to Germany or Italy things start to get more complicated.

herbst··on Stripe said to abandon $50B pursuit of PayPal
Which is the problem. Why does something like this even exist?
herbst··on An ongoing 3D-printer AGPL violation
As Linux user I am not picky when I do get software at the same or faster release cycle than anyone else. That's still more than uncommon.
herbst··on An ongoing 3D-printer AGPL violation
Upload things, upload print profiles and get points, exchange for printer or tools or filament. Sounds weird but for whatever reason it pays very well
herbst··on An ongoing 3D-printer AGPL violation
Replacing my old ender with something that actually works was a relatively spontaneous thing for me. And as it's purely a hobby I looked for something price sensible but with multicolor support that I don't have to thinker with anymore.

Not sure if Bambu was already hated back then for stuff like this. At least not that much, it just wasn't super open sure.

At this point I get a new printer for free every few months because of makerworld and their weird point system, so until I actually do any business with it I have no real reason to change my platform right now.

herbst··on An ongoing 3D-printer AGPL violation
If I would have read more into it before buying a Bambu I would probably own a prusa too, also I get where you are coming from, my $300 ender was a years long pain with >$800 in upgrades and replacements and barely show worthy prints.

However I've seen so many non technical people having fun with 3d printers at a pure hobby level at this point it's hard to not recommend Bambu in some way.

I never used Windows, I never used Apple, I never used Adobe, I made my life harder than I needed to for my ideals...

Now I am old and have enough hobbies and want things that just work.

Got an iPad, and honestly most apps actually suck and cost monthly subscriptions plus app price, got a windows PC for music and it's horrible and full of ads.

But these 3d printers actually just work.

From a customer standpoint I can't blame them, it's sad that they can't be at least a little less evil

herbst··on An ongoing 3D-printer AGPL violation
I am not sure if that is actually the case. Everyone I know with anything else than a bambu still has regular maintenance, constant adjustment and failures. Bambu just works. Sure prusa are cool too, but much more expensive and still more maintenance.

I honestly don't want another maintenance hobby. I just want something that works and doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

herbst··on More than half of adults in U.S. say they lack basic statistical understanding
That's so obvious when the answer to "X per capita" is usually "but the US is so big"
herbst··on Ask HN: Coding is a solved problem. What is left for experienced engineers?
Maintaining yes, but creating I yet need to see an example that doesn't shout "made with AI" on the first glance.

And also for maintaining you'd still need a skilled engineer to avoid the AI taking stupid decisions.

I know it's only a question of time tho

herbst··on Ask HN: Coding is a solved problem. What is left for experienced engineers?
This sentiment is why more and more apps/websites and tools start looking the same, acting the same and being broken in the same corners.

From what I can tell we ain't actually there yet. We will be sure, but at this point in time my human perspective and input is everything that keeps my stuff from going generic.

herbst··on Where did all the public bathrooms go?
In Bern, Switzerland there are still a few of those "historic" Pissoir in public. (Well at least 2 that come to my mind, one actually really old) - the second near a club is also used by girls, I never watched how but they do.

As a tourist I imagine its hard to find a toilet if you need one right now. If you lived here for a while you know where to go, and that it's either shared with junkies or costs CHF 2. Or in rare occasions nether of both

herbst··on Where did all the public bathrooms go?
I've seen people shit in the jungle because what you describe has only been the case near Bangkok and Chiang Mai for me.

Just because they smile when you ask a random restaurant for using the toilet does not actually mean they are happy when people do.

herbst··on How Europe is killing makers and micro-entrepreneurs
I ran an online shop from Switzerland. Some years ago packages suddenly returned with the info I need to register with a packaging something company now. I had no idea what's going on, I didn't understand the concept and what they wanted. Apparently there were several companies I could register at pay a fee and it somehow became legal again, none of them looked real it looked like a lot of weird broken fake websites.

Germany was just a small market for us so we stopped shipping there.

I assume it's better and more clear these days and this probably makes it kinda easier in the long run. However it's a perfect example on how such things don't work if not done properly.

Sounds reasonable. Good luck

Any pointers who you are going to donate to first?

Edit:// your imprint is still Claude default stuff

herbst··on Israel creates fake think tank in likely attempt to dupe AI chatbots
I hope you are right, until then I just hope people would stop killing each other at this rapid rate
herbst··on Israel creates fake think tank in likely attempt to dupe AI chatbots
I get where you are going at, but in the conflict we talk about I am pretty sure both sides are killing children right now. So still complicated.

So is the US bombing children in Iran and many other countries in the past years. Is the US the pure evil now? Maybe, but I don't claim to have a final opinion there either

herbst··on Children's stunted lungs show recovery in ultra low emission zone
Sure it absolutely makes sense. But for me and my eyes 200 people passing by are somehow still less "busy" than 25 loud and stinky cars. That's what I mean with I need better wording
herbst··on Scientists stunned by children's lung recovery in ultra low emission zone
Ok that's not what I consider a "busy street" but I get your point, need better wording there.
herbst··on Children's stunted lungs show recovery in ultra low emission zone
When I talk about health implications I often end up saying "but it's less bad than living next to a street" which statistically many things we spend time optimizing about are.

However most people live next to a busy street ...

I am not apolotical, how could one be really? It's more like the whole topic is so full of hate, propaganda, missleading information from all sides that it's either I spend a few weeks or months reading into the history of it or I better don't develop a strong opinion because I likely would be wrong in many points.

No idea where everyone is taking the time from to read up the whole history of things when they publicly propagate their strong opinions about all these complex situations.

To clarify I have an opinion, but I am aware that my opinion is only based on some obvious facts and ignores a lot of the history, so I don't consider it worth fighting for.

herbst··on Israel creates fake think tank in likely attempt to dupe AI chatbots
Don't get me wrong, fake news is real. Obviously, always was. But the hysteria and the way "fake news" is used to this day to discredit everything someone doesn't like is definitely forever associated with trump (for me)
herbst··on Repair Cafe – Fix Your Broken Items
Our economy is weird. Paying someone to sharpen a knife in Switzerland (high hourly wages) can easily be more expensive than a new cheap knife. Same for a proper sharpener tool.
herbst··on Israel creates fake think tank in likely attempt to dupe AI chatbots
European here with little political knowledge. I thought Israel is just some kind of liberal safe space, I am still sometimes confused what it appears to really be but try to avoid having a strong opinion either way.
herbst··on Israel creates fake think tank in likely attempt to dupe AI chatbots
From my POV the fake news hysteria was bound to trump's propaganda efforts and nothing else really.

But that's just a stupid central Europeans POV

herbst··on GIMP Development Update
I honestly didn't put that much thought into it. I assumed it's woke as it opposed the sexual name, from my short Google fo this was the main reason for the fork.

I am not American either so I had no idea about the "old meaning" and even less do I care about sexual stuff in my software naming schemes.

herbst··on If Meta loses this trial, Instagram and Facebook could change forever
They made WhatsApp the barely supervised TikTok/Instagram for children. How is that not child neglect to begin with?
