herbst··on It's time for Mark Zuckerberg to resign from Meta
I am not forgetting that no. Signal and Telegram are the main drivers and Instagram is just as dead as Facebook itself is.
herbst··on It's time for Mark Zuckerberg to resign from Meta
What void tho? The majority of people _I know_ below 40 don't use Facebook or any related service at all.
herbst··on Switzerland's Federal Government Is Replacing Microsoft on 3k Computers
This was an issue, but at this point Microsoft is placing ads everywhere, negative news on my desktop, and update nags with changing buttons in every other start. Nothing about it is smooth or consistent anymore.

Seriously I've learned about the death of hundreds of people when I switched on my music PC (the only reason I have one windows machine is music software) - I haven't asked for this, and I removed news before, they just patched it back in

herbst··on Switzerland's Federal Government Is Replacing Microsoft on 3k Computers
I've written quite a few tools for the Swiss government in my time and 98% of them are part of the intranet or even external websites. It's all web anyway.
herbst··on The asteroid currently hitting front end web development
I've made websites for universities and science programs so I've got a taste of the other side, where money doesn't really matter that much and accessibility is a must.

It's hard to go back and just ignore it

herbst··on Ask HN: 30, burnt out, with 6-10 months of runway. What would you do?
Move away for a while, do nothing, actively. Consider a week of dwelling in front of the TV as success. Break your pattern. It might doesn't get better, but you might learn to live with it.

Source: been there at 25. Still am there 11 years later, but life is good now.

The issue is that AI is still very bad at making frontends that work well on any kind of device, for blind people or otherwise impaired, color blind, ...

However it's not that anyone cared before otherwise AI would know better than that

herbst··on Chat Bots Compared: An interactive quiz to find AI companions
Having spent some money, time and coding in this space the real issue with most of these projects is how boring the AIs are. There are no surprises, just the same rotation on and on.

Other than that synsual can control toys. This is actually next level stuff over there if you have a smart toy

herbst··on Why do so many tools have JSON config files?
> It's readable, it's easy

That's what I am saying about my ruby codes as well. Still my boss wanted proper commit messages

herbst··on [dead]
It shouts "I am made with codex" in every little aspect of the site
herbst··on FBI Probes Service Selling 153M+ Drivers Licenses
There are also very very strict rules for companies that use or process this kinda of data and how they need to save and handle it. Hence why it's basically illegal to use US based services for anything with real data these days.

I wish it would be more enforced and controlled tho.

herbst··on Show HN: HN Match Maker – Matching "Who Wants to Be Hired?" With "Who's Hiring?"
It would be more useful if next to "remote" it also shows where the company actually is. I am sure many people don't want to work for us companies. Otherwise cool project
herbst··on Sonic Pi
Saw him way over 10 years ago presenting it a Rubycon, it was incredible to watch and even thought I do understand a bit about music it's really hard for me to transport this concept to code event thought ruby is my language of choice. Tried it a few times since.

Maybe I should try again with some LLM help

herbst··on New Zero-Cal Sugar Is 3,500 Times Sweeter Than Sucrose, but Doesn't Spike Insulin
Curious how it actually is. Most people seem to do fine with Acesulfam K or Aspartam both of which even very low doses mess up my tummy, same as sucralose and Stevia where I can at least consume small amounts from time to time.

For me the safest bet still is sugar, but the industry is not making it easy for me. And it seems to get harder every year.

Especially on holidays in sugar taxed countries ...

herbst··on Fastpotify
The whole service is shit, all music you discover is bought to be there, a lot of it is AI.
herbst··on 'Mad honey' that can stop your heart is being sold online
I never saw that sold for weight loss before. I got introduced to it as a aphrodisiac when mixed with vitamin C if I remember correctly. Interesting stuff
herbst··on 'Mad honey' that can stop your heart is being sold online
Are there peptites do get high? To my understanding that stuff is more or less the opposite of getting high, more self optimisation, more control about self aspectsy etc.
herbst··on Get your Windows license refund
You cannot pay cash for MANY things I consider a requirement these days. Ex internet, health care, mobile access, ...

None of these in my country support crypto either. Well for mobile maybe.

herbst··on Europe's summer drought is so extreme that desertification is a growing threat
Same here in the Swiss Alps. Doesn't look so bad, but rain is WAY below what it should be. Still is
herbst··on The world may have less time than it thinks on climate change
I don't know anyone or ever see any media reflecting such a weird standpoint. It's more "better act now than even later"
herbst··on EVE Online moves to Python 3
Looks really interesting. Any plans for a Linux client? Or do you maybe test and build with proper Wine support?
herbst··on Glacier Mice
I don't have a Wikipedia link for this.

But at the right time of a cold winter day (late evening), at the right place (I saw it in a forest) you can see spiders walking all over the snow hunting.

If you see it in person it's a really weird phenomen. Makes you realize how many spiders there actually are too.

I wish it were that easy. But you get constantly flagged, questioned and banned from things if you don't play the traditional banking rules.

I am trying, that's why I know

herbst··on Verschlimmbesserung: The Word Your Software Updates Need
It's not even funny how often that word sounds in my head these days
herbst··on GUIs should be fully keyboard-driven
When I learned Webdesign accessibility was a main factor, always. Today it seems more like the absolute exception, even Ai doesn't care about it by default.

In professional work many customers were like "nah, we don't need that, we won't pay for that"

I don't get how and why we evolve backwards in these things.

If not for online banking I probably wouldn't even have a smartphone, however none of my banks supports anything other than recent androids. I feel stuck
herbst··on An ongoing 3D-printer AGPL violation
I have a p2s (and x2c) but the main difference in can instantly tell here is that I haven't had any clogs with any enclosed Bambu so far and whatever material I throw at it it just works. It's maybe not a lot difference but it's the thinker free experience I was hoping for.
herbst··on An ongoing 3D-printer AGPL violation
This is the exact thing I was afraid of to end up with again. I don't want a maintain hobby
herbst··on Stripe said to abandon $50B pursuit of PayPal
In Switzerland the concept of a "Einzugsermächtigung" exists too, but it's a step or two more than just knowing your IBAN.

Basically you do this with your bank and not the other way around with the merchant.

Is it common to check all your banking stuff every month to make sure there is nothing fraudulent? I don't see how this is practical
