herbst··on Dating Apps Are Dying
Yes. Everyone says things like "go there, you'll meet people" and the reality is, yes you might meet people but on a very different level than you did 10 years ago.

I am mid 30 (so not that old) but the reality in dating does make me feel very old right now.

herbst··on Dating Apps Are Dying
That's the weird paradox. Never have been so many people been alone, never have so many people lived alone. And yet it seems so hard to connect.

I mean sure living in Switzerland doesn't make that more easy for sure, but the general issue doesn't seem to be a local one.

herbst··on Dating Apps Are Dying
Coming out of a very long relationship I was shocked how things changed.

I never was a dating app kind of human, but it helped me to get out there and even find my last partner.

First I assumed it's me, I am old now. But I slowly realized it's more than that, other people are old now too and yet it feels so distanced. It feels so different. It feels dishonest and fake.

But is it really much better in reality? Aren't we getting more and more distanced either way?

What are you even arguing about? WhatsApp does serve ads, obviously.

Than what do you mean with what does it have to do with it? Isn't that obvious then?
herbst··on Smartphone makers don't bother to comply with EU repairability requirements
To be fair, that's actually basically true. Saying this as a swiss who stopped selling to Europe.

You need to register in several countries for packaging, there is no central thing and it's kinda obscure (in Germany there are several different companies you can do that with, from my understanding). There is a new law since August who tries to centralise and make it easier for sellers. But right now it isn't, there are several country specific small hoops and Ive experienced returned items with complain letters and threaten fees as well.

Sad to here. I lively in a quiet remote place in the mountains and I usually only find fox shit, or occasional cat shit if anything. People here in Switzerland do usually care. And I got the same impression from _most_ our neighbour countries.
herbst··on Meta continues to run ads promoting child sexual abuse material in India
Are you suggesting WhatsApp is not part of the same evil company that is happy to spam the world with dangerous and horrible ads?
herbst··on Meta continues to run ads promoting child sexual abuse material in India
Which is true as well. It doesn't make them bad people or evil human beings. But they are definitely part of the problem yes, hard to deny that.

Also kinda funny how you compare meta with cocaine

herbst··on Getting your hands dirty is good for you
Honestly that sounds horrible. In most of the civilized modern world that problem is solved tho and people pick up after their dogs
herbst··on Switzerland's Federal Government Is Replacing Microsoft on 3k Computers
When you have no windows experience? Barely anyone to ask for expertise and only depend on Google, Chatgpt and sketchy third party tools and does feel hard tho. And it doesn't end, it just keeps coming up with new bloat.

Imo windows users are just blind for all the bloat

herbst··on Meta continues to run ads promoting child sexual abuse material in India
People who are using this shit hole of company should be aware that they are part of the problem with every click they do, whenever they message someone on WhatsApp. You are part of the problem

In Switzerland there is tutti, in Austria there is willhaben, Germany has Kleinanzeigen (afaik that's owned by eBay)

Same for events, plenty of local or more spread sites for events in each of these counties.

So glad my general area didn't fall into the Facebook trap.

They are just grabbing the low hanging fruits to make investors happy.

To be fair I stopped caring about specific versions as well. I don't seem to notice the big difference anymore on daily tasks and questions.
herbst··on Smartphone makers don't bother to comply with EU repairability requirements
Don't get me wrong but it sounds like you are applying a foreign logic to the EU system without understanding how these things usually work here.

I personally happily followed GDPR rules, so did many others. Making it generally a better place. That wasn't because of fines but because we now had a framework to follow to make the world a safer place.

herbst··on Smartphone makers don't bother to comply with EU repairability requirements
There seems to be a strong sentiment in a specific direction, with everyone saying more or less the same weird arguments.

Maybe non EU people shouldn't judge this much? Its generally Very welcomed around here

herbst··on Smartphone makers don't bother to comply with EU repairability requirements
Ever had a GoPro? Or professional camera? Drone? It's really not so hard to imagine a market for replaceable batteries lol.

My ThinkPad t420 had a small built in battery so I could switch batteries without shutdown. Imagine the magic. Imagine taking 20+ hours of laptop battery with you 15 years ago.

herbst··on Smartphone makers don't bother to comply with EU repairability requirements
There seems to be a very common idea why the EU is failing dramatically with these ideas that I didnt seem to understand. Knowing it has a US political context suddenly makes everything a little less weird.

This looks less sketchy than what I used. Surprised I found so much sketchy stuff and not simply that.

Guess that's like adblock these days. You need domain specific knowledge or you get not what you expect.

I only have this one windows PC and I hate it, so correct me if I am wrong but I can't simply turn these off. First I either need to understand the registry or trust some third party software, and second windows just turns it on again in the next updates where I have to go back and trust random third party software again.

Every other onboard tool or software wastes space to advertise for some AI or office subscription. I wasn't able to disable that at all.

And for notifications there is seems barely any control at all. All software is able to constantly nag me with weird notifications.

You make it sounds like I could just turn it off, but I googled a lot and turned out I can't. But maybe it's just me?

herbst··on Smartphone makers don't bother to comply with EU repairability requirements
They will get fined, but it doesn't happen within just a few weeks.
herbst··on Smartphone makers don't bother to comply with EU repairability requirements
Does it really matter this early?

What I expect from this is rather that at least a few producers get more repair friendly so I as consumer have the choice again. (Writing this on my first phone without easily changeable battery, I've tried for very long)

So I as my families tech guru can give the right signals to my family and in a few years we see the actual change happen. Slowly but steadily

herbst··on It's time for Mark Zuckerberg to resign from Meta
Same here. Also interesting how defensive people seem to get when they are somehow stuck using these networks trough their social circle or area
herbst··on Switzerland's Federal Government Is Replacing Microsoft on 3k Computers
Is that true? No stock tickers, no ads, no ai nags? No "news"? No weird notifications that ask for my attention? I guess no regular weird update windows would be the case, but the rest?
herbst··on It's time for Mark Zuckerberg to resign from Meta
When I open Instagram that is still connected to all my old friends, class mates, travel buddies and whatever I get 90% third party ads and 10% posts that might even be a few months old, and most of that is just "look at me" type of content.

So I have to assume it's dead

herbst··on It's time for Mark Zuckerberg to resign from Meta
> or any related services.

So nah, most don't. I know some do, but the main socialisation isn't happening there.

herbst··on Switzerland's Federal Government Is Replacing Microsoft on 3k Computers
I've used plenty of sketchy third party tools to get rid of all that weirdness but they keep patching it back somehow. I never get rid of the ads long term, also sticking to win10. Thing is I DJ straight from soundcloud mostly so going offline is not a real option for me.
herbst··on It's time for Mark Zuckerberg to resign from Meta
Central Europe here myself (Switzerland to be precise) signal and telegram are the dominant IM and Instagram is just as dead as Facebook, sure some might use it but nobody expects anyone else to to.
herbst··on It's time for Mark Zuckerberg to resign from Meta
I am not forgetting that no. Signal and Telegram are the main drivers and Instagram is just as dead as Facebook itself is.
